[Termes IGN] volume (grandeur)Résumé : (auteur) Key message : Three options are proposed to improve the accuracy of national forest biomass estimates and decrease the uncertainty related to tree model selection depending on available data and national contexts.
Introduction : Different tree volume and biomass equations result in different estimates. At national scale, differences of estimates can be important while they constitute the basis to guide policies and measures, particularly in the context of climate change mitigation.
Method : Few countries have developed national tree volume and biomass equation databases and have explored its potential to decrease uncertainty of volume and biomasttags estimates. With the launch of the GlobAllomeTree webplatform, most countries in the world could have access to country-specific databases. The aim of this article is to recommend approaches for assessing tree and forest volume and biomass at national level with the lowest uncertainty. The article highlights the crucial need to link allometric equation development with national forest inventory planning efforts.
Results : Models must represent the tree population considered. Data availability; technical, financial, and human capacities; and biophysical context, among other factors, will influence the calculation process.
Conclusion : Three options are proposed to improve accuracy of national forest assessment depending on identified contexts. Further improvements could be obtained through improved forest stratification and additional non-destructive field campaigns.

[Termes IGN] transformation non linéaireRésumé : (Auteur) A new approach to relative orientation based on dual quaternions is proposed. Dual quaternions are used to express a unified description of the relative position and orientation of two images in a stereopair. The coplanarity condition equation and its linearised model based on dual quaternions are established. According to the principle of least squares adjustment with constraints, a dual quaternion can be identified and the relative-orientation parameters can then be obtained by a non-linear transformation of the components of the dual quaternion. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is feasible and more reliable and efficient than the conventional approach based on Euler angles. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Sea surface temperature (SST) plays a vital role in the Earth's atmosphere and climate systems. Complete and accurate SST observations are in great demand for forecasting tropical cyclones and projecting climate change. Satellite remote sensing has been used to retrieve SST globally, but missing values and biased observations impose difficulties on practical applications of these satellite-derived SST data. Conventional spatial statistics methods such as kriging have been widely used to fill the gaps. However, when such conventional methods are used to analyze a massive satellite data set of size n, the inversion of the n × n covariance matrix may require O(n3) computations, which make the computation very intensive or even infeasible. The fixed rank kriging (FRK) performs dimension reduction through multiresolution wavelet analysis so that it can dramatically reduce the computation cost of various kriging methods. However, the FRK cannot directly be used for incomplete data over spatially irregular regions such as SSTs, and the potential bias in the satellite data is not addressed. In this paper, we construct a data-driven bias-correction model for the correction of the bias in satellite SSTs and develop a robust FRK (R-FRK) method so that the dimension reduction can be used to the satellite data in irregular regions with missing data. We implement the bias-correction model and the R-FRK to the level-3 mapped night Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer SSTs. The accuracy of the resulting predictions is assessed using the colocated drifting buoy SST observations, in terms of mean bias (bias), root-mean-squared error, and R squared (R2). The spatial completeness is assessed by the availability of ocean pixels. The assessment results show that the spatially. [Termes IGN] image ERS-SARRésumé : (Auteur) Learning can be of great use when dealing with problems in various fields. Inspired by locally linear embedding from manifold, we propose a novel automatic change-detection method through an offline learning approach. The proposed method comprises three steps. First, two coupled dictionaries of the difference image (DI) patches and change-detection map patches are generated from known image pairs. Second, we approximately represent each patch of the input DI with respect to the DI dictionary by using the matching the pursuit algorithm. Third, the coefficients of this representation are applied with the change-detection map dictionary to generate the output change-detection map. This way, we exploit the relationship between the DI patches and the corresponding change-detection map patches based on two coupled dictionaries. In addition, the relationship guides us to construct the change-detection map for any given input DI. Experimental results on real synthetic aperture radar databases show that the proposed method is superior to its counterparts. Our method can obtain promising results, even though the dictionaries are prepared by simple random sampling from fixed training images. [Termes IGN] rotation de la TerreRésumé : (auteur) The Empirical CODE Orbit Model (ECOM) of the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), which was developed in the early 1990s, is widely used in the International GNSS Service (IGS) community. For a rather long time, spurious spectral lines are known to exist in geophysical parameters, in particular in the Earth Rotation Parameters (ERPs) and in the estimated geocenter coordinates, which could recently be attributed to the ECOM. These effects grew creepingly with the increasing influence of the GLONASS system in recent years in the CODE analysis, which is based on a rigorous combination of GPS and GLONASS since May 2003. In a first step we show that the problems associated with the ECOM are to the largest extent caused by the GLONASS, which was reaching full deployment by the end of 2011. GPS-only, GLONASS-only, and combined GPS/GLONASS solutions using the observations in the years 2009–2011 of a global network of 92 combined GPS/GLONASS receivers were analyzed for this purpose. In a second step we review direct solar radiation pressure (SRP) models for GNSS satellites. We demonstrate that only even-order short-period harmonic perturbations acting along the direction Sun-satellite occur for GPS and GLONASS satellites, and only odd-order perturbations acting along the direction perpendicular to both, the vector Sun-satellite and the spacecraft’s solar panel axis. Based on this insight we assess in the third step the performance of four candidate orbit models for the future ECOM. The geocenter coordinates, the ERP differences w. r. t. the IERS 08 C04 series of ERPs, the misclosures for the midnight epochs of the daily orbital arcs, and scale parameters of Helmert transformations for station coordinates serve as quality criteria. The old and updated ECOM are validated in addition with satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations and by comparing the orbits to those of the IGS and other analysis centers. Based on all tests, we present a new extended ECOM which substantially reduces the spurious signals in the geocenter coordinate z (by about a factor of 2–6), reduces the orbit misclosures at the day boundaries by about 10 %, slightly improves the consistency of the estimated ERPs with those of the IERS 08 C04 Earth rotation series, and substantially reduces the systematics in the SLR validation of the GNSS orbits.
