[Termes IGN] positionnement par GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) AUSGeoid09 is the new Australia-wide gravimetric quasigeoid model that has been a posteriori fitted to the Australian Height Datum (AHD) so as to provide a product that is practically useful for the more direct determination of AHD heights from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). This approach is necessary because the AHD is predominantly a third-order vertical datum that contains a ~1 m north-south tilt and ~0.5 m regional distortions with respect to the quasigeoid, meaning that GNSS-gravimetric-quasigeoid and AHD heights are inconsistent. Because the AHD remains the official vertical datum in Australia, it is necessary to provide GNSS users with effective means of recovering AHD heights. The gravimetric component of the quasigeoid model was computed using a hybrid of the remove-compute-restore technique with a degree-40 deterministically modified kernel over a one-degree spherical cap, which is superior to the remove-compute-restore technique alone in Australia (with or without a cap). This is because the modified kernel and cap combine to filter long-wavelength errors from the terrestrial gravity anomalies. The zero-tide EGM2008 global gravitational model to degree 2,190 was used as the reference field. Other input data are ~1.4 million land gravity anomalies from Geoscience Australia, 1' x ' DNSC2008GRA altimeter-derived gravity anomalies offshore, the 9"x 9" GEODATA-DEM9S Australian digital elevation model, and a readjustment of Australian National Levelling Network (ANLN) constrained to the CARS2006 mean dynamic ocean topography model. To determine the numerical integration parameters for the modified kernel, the gravimetric component of AUSGeoid09 was compared with 911 GNSS-observed ellipsoidal heights at benchmarks. The standard deviation of fit to the GNSS-AHD heights is + 222 mm, which dropped to + 134 mm for the readjusted GNSS-ANLN heights showing that careful consideration now needs to be given to the quality of the levelling data used to assess gravimetric quasigeoid models. The publicly released version of AUSGeoid09 also includes a geometric component that models the difference between the gravimetric quasigeoid and the zero surface of the AHD at 6,794 benchmarks. This a posteriori fitting used least-squares collocation (LSC) in cross-validation mode to determine a correlation length of 75 km for the analytical covariance function, whereas the noise was taken from the estimated standard deviation of the GNSS ellipsoidal heights. After this LSC surface fitting, the standard deviation of fit reduced to + 30 mm, one-third of which is attributable to the uncertainty in the GNSS ellipsoidal heights. However, there are few studies that assess the capability of remote sensing observations to monitor ecosystem phenology along elevation gradients, despite their relevance under climate change. We investigated the potential of medium resolution remotely sensed data to monitor the elevation variations in the seasonal dynamics of a temperate deciduous broadleaf forested ecosystem. Further, we explored the impact of elevation on the onset of spring leafing. This study was based on the analysis of multi-annual time-series of VEGETATION data acquired over the French Pyrenees Mountain Region (FPMR), in conjunction with simultaneous ground-based observations of leaf phenology made for two dominant tree species in the region (oak and beech). The seasonal variations in the perpendicular vegetation index (PVI) were analyzed during a five-year period (2002 to 2006). The five years of data were averaged into a one sole year in order to fill the numerous large spatio-temporal gaps due to cloud and snow presence – frequent in mountains – without altering the temporal resolution. Since a VEGETATION pixel (1 km²) includes several types of land cover, the broadleaf forest-specific seasonal dynamics of PVI was reconstructed pixel-by-pixel using a temporal unmixing method based on a non-parametric statistical approach. The spatial pattern of the seasonal response of PVI was clearly consistent with the relief. Nevertheless the elevational or geographic range of tree species, which differ in their phenology sensitivity to temperature, also has a significant impact on this pattern. The reduction in the growing season length with elevation was clearly observable from the delay in the increase of PVI in spring and from the advance of its decrease in the fall. The elevation variations in leaf flushing timing were estimated from the temporal change in PVI in spring over the study area. They were found to be consistent with those measured in situ (R2 > 0.95). It was deduced that, over FPMR, the mean delay of leaf flushing timing for every 100 m increase in elevation was estimated be approximately 2.3 days. The expected estimation error of satellite-based leaf unfolding date for a given elevation was approximately 2 days. This accuracy can be considered as satisfactory since it would allow us to detect changes in leafing timing of deciduous broadleaf forests with a magnitude equivalent to that due to an elevation variation of 100 m (2.3 days on average), or in other words, to that caused by a variation in the mean annual air temperature of 0.5 °C. Although averaging the VEGETATION data over five years led to a loss of interannual information, it was found to be a robust approach to characterise the elevation variations in spring leafing and its long-term trends. [Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (Auteur) We compare the influence of two different a priori gradient models on the terrestrial reference frame (TRF) as determined from Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. One model has been determined by vertical integration over horizontal gradients of refractivity as derived from data of the Goddard Data Assimilation Office (DAO), whereas the second model (APG) has been determined by ray-tracing through monthly mean pressure level re-analysis data of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. We compare VLBI solutions from 1990.0 to 2011.0 with fixed DAO and APG gradients to a solution with gradients being estimated, and we find better agreement of station coordinates when fixing DAO gradients compared to fixing APG gradients. As a consequence, we recommend that gradients are constrained to DAO gradients, in particular in the early years of VLBI observations (up to about 1990), when the number of stations per session is small and the sky distribution is far from uniform. Later than 1990, the gradients can be constrained loosely and the a priori model is of minor importance. [Termes IGN] population animaleRésumé : (Auteur) Species’ potential distribution modelling is the process of building a representation of the fundamental ecological requirements for a species and extrapolating these requirements into a geographical region. The importance of being able to predict the distribution of species is currently highlighted by issues like global climate change, public health problems caused by disease vectors, anthropogenic impacts that can lead to massive species extinction, among other challenges. There are several computational approaches that can be used to generate potential distribution models, each achieving optimal results under different conditions. However, the existing software packages available for this purpose typically implement a single algorithm, and each software package presents a new learning curve to the user. Whenever new software is developed for species’ potential distribution modelling, significant duplication of effort results because many feature requirements are shared between the different packages. Additionally, data preparation and comparison between algorithms becomes difficult when using separate software applications, since each application has different data input and output capabilities. This paper describes a generic approach for building a single computing framework capable of handling different data formats and multiple algorithms that can be used in potential distribution modelling. The ideas described in this paper have been implemented in a free and open source software package called openModeller. The main concepts of species’ potential distribution modelling are also explained and an example use case illustrates potential distribution maps generated by the framework.
