[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Rough set and fuzzy set are two frequently used approaches for modelling and reasoning about imperfect time intervals. In this paper, we focus on imperfect time intervals that can be modelled by rough sets and use an innovative graphic model [i.e. the triangular model (TM)] to represent this kind of imperfect time intervals. This work shows that TM is potentially advantageous in visualizing and querying imperfect time intervals, and its analytical power can be better exploited when it is implemented in a computer application with graphical user interfaces and interactive functions. Moreover, a probabilistic framework is proposed to handle the uncertainty issues in temporal queries. We use a case study to illustrate how the unique insights gained by TM can assist a geographical information system for exploratory spatio-temporal analysis. [Termes IGN] image MSGRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose an innovative method for identifying irrigated areas and quantifying the blue evapotranspiration (ETb), or irrigation water evapotranspired from the field. The method compares actual ET (ETactual), or crop water use, values from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and remote sensing based ETactual estimates obtained from Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites. Since GLDAS simulations do not account for extra water supply due to irrigation, it is expected that they underestimate ETactual during the cropping season in irrigated areas. However, remote sensing techniques based on the energy balance are able to observe the total ETactual. In order to isolate irrigation effects from other fluctuations that may lead to discrepancies between the different ETactual products, the bias between model simulations and remote sensing observations was estimated using reference targets of rainfed (non-irrigated) croplands on a daily basis in different areas across the study region (Europe). Analysis of the yearly values of ETb (irrigated area and volume obtained for croplands in Europe for 2008) showed that the method identified irrigation when yearly values were higher than 50 mm. The accuracy of the method was assessed by analyzing the spatial representativity of the calculated biases and evaluating the daily ETb values obtained. The irrigated areas were compared with the results provided by Siebert et al.(2007) and Thenkabail et al.(2009b), obtaining a spatial match of 47 and 72 percent, respectively, with overestimation of irrigated area on a country scale. Additional evaluation with the ETb results of Mekonnen and Hoekstra (2011) showed 75 percent of overlap for _50 mm range. Finally, validation with in situ data on irrigation volumes proved the cogency of our method with less than 20 percent difference between derived and measured values. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (Auteur) This article describes results from a research project undertaken to explore the technical issues associated with integrating unstructured crowd sourced data with authoritative national mapping data. The ultimate objective is to develop methodologies to ensure the feature enrichment of authoritative data, using crowd sourced data. Users increasingly find that they wish to use data from both kinds of geographic data sources. Different techniques and methodologies can be developed to solve this problem. In our previous research, a position map matching algorithm was developed for integrating authoritative and crowd sourced road vector data, and showed promising results (Anand et al. 2010). However, especially when integrating different forms of data at the feature level, these techniques are often time consuming and are more computationally intensive than other techniques available. To tackle these problems, this project aims at developing a methodology for automated conflict resolution, linking and merging of geographical information from disparate authoritative and crowd-sourced data sources. This article describes research undertaken by the authors on the design, implementation, and evaluation of algorithms and procedures for producing a coherent ontology from disparate geospatial data sources. To integrate road vector data from disparate sources, the method presented in this article first converts input data sets to ontologies, and then merges these ontologies into a new ontology. This new ontology is then checked and modified to ensure that it is consistent. The developed methodology can deal with topological and geometry inconsistency and provide more flexibility for geospatial information merging. [Termes IGN] résolution d'ambiguïtéRésumé : (Auteur) Ambiguity resolution dedicated to a single global positioning system (GPS) station can improve the accuracy of precise point positioning. In this process, the estimation accuracy of the narrow-lane fractional-cycle biases (FCBs), which destroy the integer nature of undifferenced ambiguities, is crucial to the ambiguity-fixed positioning accuracy. In this study, we hence propose the improved narrow-lane FCBs derived from an ambiguity-fixed GPS network solution, rather than the original (i.e. previously proposed) FCBs derived from an ambiguity-float network solution. The improved FCBs outperform the original FCBs by ensuring that the resulting ambiguity-fixed daily positions coincide in nature with the state-of-the-art positions generated by the International GNSS Service (IGS). To verify this improvement, 1 year of GPS measurements from about 350 globally distributed stations were processed. We find that the original FCBs differ more from the improved FCBs when fewer stations are involved in the FCB estimation, especially when the number of stations is less than 20. Moreover, when comparing the ambiguity-fixed daily positions with the IGS weekly positions for 248 stations through a Helmert transformation, for the East component, we find that on 359 days of the year the daily RMS of the transformed residuals based on the improved FCBs is smaller by up to 0.8 mm than those based on the original FCBs, and the mean RMS over the year falls evidently from 2.6 to 2.2 mm. Meanwhile, when using the improved rather than the original FCBs, the RMS of the transformed residuals for the East component of 239 stations (i.e. 96.4% of all 248 stations) is clearly reduced by up to 1.6 mm, especially for stations located within a sparse GPS network. Therefore, we suggest that narrow-lane FCBs should be determined with ambiguity-fixed, rather than ambiguity-float, GPS network solutions. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper focuses on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of dynamic and interactive maps in relation to the user. A label placement method with an improved algorithmic efficiency is presented. Since this algorithm has an influence on the actual placement of the name labels on the map, it is tested if this efficient algorithms also creates more effective maps: how well is the information processed by the user. We tested 30 participants while they were working on a dynamic and interactive map display. Their task was to locate geographical names on each of the presented maps. Their eye movements were registered together with the time at which a given label was found. The gathered data reveal no difference in the user’s response times, neither in the number and the duration of the fixations between both map designs. The results of this study show that the efficiency of label placement algorithms can be improved without disturbing the user’s cognitive map. Consequently, we created a more efficient map without affecting its effectiveness towards the user.
