[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (auteur) The 2014 Data Fusion Contest, organized by the Image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF) Technical Committee of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, involved two datasets acquired at different spectral ranges and spatial resolutions: a coarser-resolution long-wave infrared (LWIR, thermal infrared) hyperspectral data set and fine-resolution data acquired in the visible (VIS) wavelength range. In this article, a novel multi-level fusion approach is proposed to fully utilize the characteristics of these two different datasets to achieve improved urban land-use and land-cover classification. Specifically, road extraction by fusing the classification result of the TI-HSI dataset and the segmentation result of the VIS dataset is first proposed. Thereafter, a novel gap inpainting method for the VIS data with the guidance of the TI-HSI data is presented to deal with the swath width inconsistency, and to facilitate an accurate spatial feature extraction step. The experimental results with the 2014 Data Fusion Contest datasets suggest that the proposed method can alleviate the multi-spectral-spatial resolution and multi-swath width problem to a great extent, and achieve an improved urban classification accuracy. An imbalance between root demand and shoot production of carbohydrates may contribute to the degradation of abandoned coppices.
Context: Our understanding of root respiration is limited, particularly in root-resprouting species with many stems and a large system of interconnected roots resulting from long-term coppicing.
Aims: We tested the hypothesis that clone size influences the internal flux of CO2 dissolved in xylem sap (F T) from roots into the stem and soil CO2 efflux (F S) as indicators of root respiration. We predicted that large clones would exhibit higher F T per stem and F S than small clones due to larger root system per stem in large clones.
Methods: Genetic analyses were performed to elucidate clonal grouping. F T was measured continuously for 100 days in 16 similar-sized stems of Quercus pyrenaica belonging to two large and two small clones. F S was measured in 20 clones of varying size.
Results: F T per stem and F S were higher in large clones. F T was 2 % of the root-respired CO2 that diffused through soil to the atmosphere.
Conclusions: Relative to other studies, the contribution of F T to root respiration was very low, pointing to large differences depending on species or site. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Crowdsourcing is a popular means of acquiring data, but the use of such data is limited by concerns with its quality. This is evident within cartography and geographical sciences more generally, with the quality of volunteered geographic information (VGI) recognized as a major challenge to address if the full potential of citizen sensing in mapping applications is to be realized. Here, a means to characterize the quality of volunteers, based only on the data they contribute, was used to explore issues connected with the quantity and quality of volunteers for attribute mapping. The focus was on data in the form of annotations or class labels provided by volunteers who visually interpreted an attribute, land cover, from a series of satellite sensor images. A latent class model was found to be able to provide accurate characterisations of the quality of volunteers in terms of the accuracy of their labelling, irrespective of the number of cases that they labelled. The accuracy with which a volunteer could be characterized tended to increase with the number of volunteers contributing but was typically good at all but small numbers of volunteers. Moreover, the ability to characterize volunteers in terms of the quality of their labelling could be used constructively. For example, volunteers could be ranked in terms of quality which could then be used to select a sub-set as input to a subsequent mapping task. This was particularly important as an identified subset of volunteers could undertake a task more accurately than when part of a larger group of volunteers. The results highlight that both the quantity and quality of volunteers need consideration and that the use of VGI may be enhanced through information on the quality of the volunteers derived entirely from the data provided without any additional information. The results indicate that respondents prefer older stands with vertical layering, irregularly spaced trees and a greater number of tree species. Our study thus indicates that forests that are managed (or left unmanaged) for biodiversity purposes are also likely to be attractive to humans. To conclude, while greater management intensity was associated with higher disutility regardless of the model employed, we do not perceive a risk of conflict between forest management designed to protect biodiversity and management targeting recreational value. Consequently, there is a need for spatially differentiated forest management that discriminates among different functions. The state ownership of all larger Polish forest massifs makes this zoning approach feasible. CSK provides distinctive demodulation properties but does not outperform BPSK implementation with equivalent bit rate and message time duration for the cases presented here. However, achieving additional improvement of the CSK modulation is still expected; for instance, optimizing error correction codes for CSK may reverse this trend.
