Ce mouvement de fond a débuté dans les années 1960 avec les premières images fournies par les satellites météorologiques et a pris une toute autre ampleur il y a dix ans environ, lorsque Google Earth et d'autres portails ont permis à tout un chacun d'accéder à des images satellite à haute résolution couvrant la planète entière. Les connaissances du grand public sont toutefois limitées, aussi bien en matière de développement et d'exploitation que de possibilités qu'offrent désormais des satellites de télédétection aux performances sans cesse accrues. Le présent article vise donc à brosser un tableau succinct des tendances et des produits les plus récents, des modalités d'obtention de données et des applications que permettent les systèmes actuels. [Termes IGN] TogoRésumé : (auteur) Key message : A retrospective architectural analysis performed on planted teaks in Togo showed that the variation of wood radial properties were linked with tree ontogeny, and that these relationships depended on thinning practices and provenance.
Context : Variability in growth, flowering and forking in individual trees according to origin and/or thinning practices may affect wood structure and consequently impact wood physical properties. We tested this hypothesis in teak.
Aims : We sought evidence of: (1) origin effects (Togolese versus Tanzanian teak) on growth, flowering, cambial growth and wood properties; (2) thinning effects on these variables and (3) relationships between tree ontogeny and radial variations of wood properties.
Methods : A retrospective architectural analysis was used to draw stem growth and near infrared spectroscopy to assess radial variations of wood properties.
Results : Flowering reflects tree vigour and began at an earlier age in Togolese than in Tanzanian provenances. No differences were detected in regards to growth ring surface area, basic density and modulus of elasticity. Both systematic and selective thinnings improved growth without impacting the two latter properties. Stabilization of the growth ring area observed at 4 years old was associated with a decline in stem annual extension with a 1-year time lag.
Conclusions : Architectural analyses showed that radial growth was linked with tree ontogeny. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Assessing the vulnerability and resilience to coastal hazards is a critical worldwide issue, especially for hurricane-prone coastal regions such as the Caribbean. However, the development of a useful metric for vulnerability and resilience assessment has a lot of challenges. Cartography and GIS analysis can contribute effectively to the solution of the issue by integrating natural and human data layers for assessment, mapping, and visualization. This paper uses the new Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model to assess the resilience of 25 countries in the Caribbean region to hurricanes. The RIM indices of the countries were computed using three variables representing three dimensions: exposure, damage, and recovery, and eight variables representing social-environmental capacity. The RIM resilience indices were mapped and compared with the vulnerability indices computed in a previous study. The results show that Turks & Caicos Islands had the highest resilience, whereas Montserrat had the lowest. This paper contributes to the hazard literature by demonstrating new vulnerability and resilience assessment methodologies that include validation and enable inference. The paper also contributes to the cartography and GIS literature by demonstrating the need to integrate data and perspectives from multiple disciplines and regions, as well as the ability of geospatial technology, in producing useful decision-making tools for a very pressing societal problem. [Termes IGN] point d'intérêtRésumé : (Auteur) Jökulhlaup is the Icelandic term for a sudden and substantial release of subglacial and/or proglacial water. The subglacial volcano Katla and its associated glacier Mýrdalsjökull, near Iceland's southern coast, have the potential to cause catastrophic jökulhlaups through geothermally induced melting and volcanic eruptions. The resulting jökulhlaups can cause destruction of property and detriment to human life. Water-filled ice depressions (termed ice cauldrons) are produced by enhanced geothermal heating/melting and are large enough to be identified through remote sensing; therefore, ice cauldrons can be used to infer geothermal hot-spot locations and melt rates. To assess the risk of surrounding communities and infrastructure, a map of geothermal hot spots, loss of glacial mass, and meltwater flow paths of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier were created and analysed. Using geospatial analysis, it was determined that three hazard zones – two towns, Alftaver (to the east) and Vik (to the south), as well as Iceland's main highway, Route 1 – are directly in the path of potential jökulhlaups originating from the Mýrdalsjökull-Katla complex. Future research should further constrain meltwater flow paths to determine potential flow discharge rates and areas that are at the greatest risk of flooding. The availability of large amounts of multivariate spatiotemporal data, however, requires new methods for pattern analysis. Here, we present a technique for finding associations among many different event types where the associations among these varying event types are not explicitly represented in the data or known in advance. This pattern discovery method, known as T-pattern analysis, was first developed within the field of psychology for the purpose of finding patterns in personal interactions. We have adapted and extended the T-pattern method to take the unique characteristics of geographic data into account and implemented it within a geovisualization toolkit for an integrated computational-geovisual environment we call STempo. To demonstrate how T-pattern analysis can be employed in geographic research for discovering patterns in complex spatiotemporal data, we describe a case study featuring events from news reports about Yemen during the Arab Spring of 2011–2012. Using supplementary data from the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone, we briefly summarize and reference a separate validation study, then evaluate the scalability of the T-pattern approach. We conclude with ideas for further extensions of the T-pattern technique to increase its utility for spatiotemporal analysis.
