[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Increasing temperatures and rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficits are exposing forests around the globe to increasing drought and heat stress, demanding a shift to climate-smart forestry for increasing the stress resistance and resilience of production forests and to enhance their climate change mitigation potential. Based on measurements in paired pine and beech forests and the review of literature data, we analyse the biophysical consequences and the carbon cycle impact of large-scale Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations in northern Germany in the face of a warming and aridifying climate. We quantified canopy surface albedo and surface temperature, evapotranspiration and deep seepage, carbon (C) storage in biomass and soil and annual C sequestration, and soil acidification of pine plantations in comparison to beech forests (Fagus sylvatica L.), the natural forest vegetation. We find that near-infrared (NIR, 700–3000 mn) canopy surface albedo is higher by 5.2 percentage points during summer over beech as compared to pine forest, resulting in a 9 % higher net radiation and a 0.6 K higher surface temperature of the pine canopy. Deep seepage is on average by 68 mm yr−1 smaller under pine than beech forest (66 mm yr−1 vs. 134 mm yr−1) due to the higher evapotranspiration of pine. C storage in biomass and soil is by ∼ 48 Mg C ha−1 higher in beech than pine forests, reflecting the higher productivity of beech, demonstrating an unfavorably low C sequestration potential of Scots pine plantations. We conclude that the large-scale Scots pine plantations in northern Germany (>1.7 million ha) are neither environmental-friendly nor climate smart, given their enhancement of climate-warming, low climate change mitigation potential, and negative effect on groundwater recharge. Replacing pine plantations by beech (or other hardwood) forests in northern Germany and adjacent regions is urgently needed for achieving the goals of climate-smart forestry. [Termes IGN] variation de densitéRésumé : (auteur) Wood density is well known to vary between tree species as well as within and between trees of a certain species depending on the growing environment causing uncertainties in forest biomass and carbon storage estimation. This has created a need to develop novel methodologies to obtain wood density information over multiple tree communities, landscapes, and ecoregions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the dependencies between structural characteristics of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) tree communities and internal wood property (i.e., mean wood density and ring width) variations at breast height. Terrestrial laser scanning was used to derive the structural characteristics of even-aged Scots pine dominated forests with varying silvicultural treatments. Pearson’s correlations and linear mixed effect models were used to evaluate the interactions. The results show that varying silvicultural treatments did not have a statistically significant effect on the mean wood density. A notably stronger effect was observed between the structural characteristics and the mean ring width within varying treatments. It can be concluded that single time terrestrial laser scanning is capable of capturing the variability of structural characteristics and their interactions with mean ring width within different silvicultural treatments but not the variation of mean wood density. To achieve a desired accuracy, it is essential to model the atmosphere in an appropriate way. With respect to the neutral atmosphere, the signal sent by the satellite suffers a delay when crossing this layer during its travel to the receiver on the surface, the so-called neutral atmospheric delay. Although empirical models exist, they may not be suitable to represent microclimatic variations in different regions of the globe due to peculiarities that exist in diverse areas. To minimize this limitation, correction models based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) emerge. They allow the assessment of the delay from local atmospheric parameters and the evaluation of atmospheric particularities of each region. In addition, another way to obtain neutral atmosphere delay is by making use of data from radiosondes, which measure atmospheric data at various altitude levels. The main objective of this article is to investigate the performance of different models using GNSS data collected in countries with different climatic conditions. Assessment is performed on the positioning domain using the precise point positioning (PPP) technique. The results show that the proximity between the NWP-based models and radiosondes was approximately 3 cm, and that between empirical models was 5 cm, with variations that depended on the model and the region. Regarding the impact on the height component, the difference between the accuracy of the empirical and NWP models was approximately 16 cm. [Termes IGN] Web Map Tile ServiceRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we present our workflow to automatically reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) building models based on two-dimensional building polygons and a lidar point cloud. The workflow generates models at different levels of detail (LoDs) to support data requirements of different applications from one consistent source. Specific attention has been paid to make the workflow robust to quickly run a new iteration in case of improvements in an algorithm or in case new input data become available. The quality of the reconstructed data highly depends on the quality of the input data and is monitored in several steps of the process. A 3D viewer has been developed to view and download the openly available 3D data at different LoDs in different formats. The workflow has been applied to all 10 million buildings of the Netherlands. The 3D service will be updated after new input data becomes available. For this purpose, 12 mountain peaks located in the south part of Polish territory were selected. Measurements were performed using a GNSS receiver using the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) or static techniques enabling altitude measurements with accuracy of 10 cm. GNSS was treated as the primary data source, as the direct field measurements can determine the highest point on each peak. The obtained results were confronted with historical, internet sources, and official altitude data. Moreover, each altitude was determined using lidar data from an airborne lidar dataset of Poland from the ISOK program and provided by the national agency. Significant discrepancies in data were already detected during the analysis of internet materials and traditional maps, up to a few meters. The differences between measured and internet sources in altitude of mountain peak range from 27 cm to 504 cm. This study has shown the need to re-measure the altitudes of the mountain peaks and determine the highest point correctly.
