[Termes IGN] gravimétrie spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The European Space Agency’s Gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer mission (GOCE) was launched on 17 March 2009. As the first of the Earth Explorer family of satellites within the Agency’s Living Planet Programme, it is aiming at a better understanding of the Earth system. The mission objective of GOCE is the determination of the Earth’s gravity field and geoid with high accuracy and maximum spatial resolution. The geoid, combined with the de facto mean ocean surface derived from twenty-odd years of satellite radar altimetry, yields the global dynamic ocean topography. It serves ocean circulation and ocean transport studies and sea level research. GOCE geoid heights allow the conversion of global positioning system (GPS) heights to high precision heights above sea level. Gravity anomalies and also gravity gradients from GOCE are used for gravity-to-density inversion and in particular for studies of the Earth’s lithosphere and upper mantle. GOCE is the first-ever satellite to carry a gravitational gradiometer, and in order to achieve its challenging mission objectives the satellite embarks a number of world-first technologies. In essence the spacecraft together with its sensors can be regarded as a spaceborne gravimeter. In this work, we describe the mission and the way it is operated and exploited in order to make available the best-possible measurements of the Earth gravity field. The main lessons learned from the first 19 months in orbit are also provided, in as far as they affect the quality of the science data products and therefore are of specific interest for GOCE data users. Data collected by volunteers has long been an important factor in environmental programmes, but the difficulties in applying quality control measures and in ensuring an appropriate sample size of observations for a given area limit their scientific value. This paper addresses this challenge in describing a surveying architecture, allowing efficient in-field data collection from a GPS enabled ubiquitous device. The originality of this architecture comes from a real-time analysis of surveyed responses in order to “drive” the survey for optimised precision and validity. Spatial awareness from the surveying engine allows one to modify the sets of questions for each surveyor volunteer as the survey goes along, and even to try to recruit volunteers in the area. As a result this architecture is able to support the implementation of a dynamic and directed approach to in-field data collection with real-time quality control driven by an adaptive surveying modelling technique insuring optimised data collection and personalised feedback to users. A plug-in architecture gives the possibility to extend using RSS, Twitter and Mappiness data sources, with other real time feeds, then allowing the adaptive surveying engine to use multilevel multi-sourced sets of information. The paper describes this conceptual architecture and a technical solution for its implementation, independent of the mobile hardware producer, tablets, smart phones, netbooks, laptops, in order to allow the widest public participation opportunity possible. The implementation was tested on Google Android and Apple iPhone devices with a use case coming from the Tranquillity Report of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of this paper is to suppress the narrowband interference (NBI) and wideband interference (WBI) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) by using a nonparametric method. The method is based on the analysis of time-frequency characteristic of NBI and WBI from which an interference suppression filter combined with the constant false alarm rate algorithm is designed. In this approach, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is used to estimate the instantaneous frequency of the SAR echo data with interference. In the STFT domain, the instantaneous frequency spectrum is represented by wavelet, and then, the designed filter filters the corresponding wavelet coefficients of the interference components. In addition, this algorithm is robust to time-varying NBI and WBI. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by the simulated and measured data, and the effectiveness is demonstrated. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for automated extraction of damage indication from very high spatial resolution satellite imagery is presented for the Haitian towns of Carrefour and Leogane following the January 2010 earthquake. Damaged buildings are identified by changes to their shadows between pre- and post-event data. The approach makes use of object-based image analysis concepts to extract relevant information on damage distribution. The methodology selected requires pre-and post-disaster images with similar sun angles and will only be suitable for the detection of collapsed (or partly collapsed) structures. The new methodology proved to be effective for the Carrefour area despite using satellite images of different qualities with inadequate image (co-)registration, producing positively validated results within an acceptable processing time, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the only automated damage assessment method to have delivered appropriate results to requesting relief organizations within a few days of the Haiti earthquake.
