[Termes IGN] récepteur GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) PC-based software GNSS receivers, which have served as powerful research tools for many years, are beginning to find applications outside the laboratory — in such areas as atmospheric modeling and synthetic aperture radar. The article describes the design of a multi-channel software receiver developed by the University of Calgary — challenges, trade-offs, results, and plans for further capabilities. A sidebar describes how the PLAN software receiver worked as a signal-monitoring tool to analyze the L5 signal broadcast by GPS satellite SVN 49. [summary] The modular design adapted for PLAN's software receiver greatly facilitates research in many areas of GNSS signal and navigation processing. The ability to quickly add new signals, new systems, and new signal processing techniques was a fundamental goal of the design process, and the success of this approach has been demonstrated through a number of examples. A common misconception suggests that a software receiver designed entirely in C++ would be too cumbersome and slow to operate in real time. On the contrary, the PLAN receiver can operate in real-time with up to 12 channels at sampling rates of over 16 Msps. Much research and development work remains to be done, even within the constraints of the software receiver as defined in Figure 2, and certainly a whole world of possibility exists beyond this specific definition. Signal quality monitoring, high-sensitivity operation, atmospheric modelling, and synthetic aperture radar applications are only a few of the potential further uses of the software receiver. We also recently commenced development of a graphical user interface (GUI) to replace the current console interface. Although this development does not contribute directly to the research goals of the PLAN group, the ability to visualize receiver data at run-time can be very useful for quick identification of interesting phenomena, such as RF interference. The test site is the metropolitan area of the city of Murcia (Spain) where a moderate slow subsidence induced by the overexploitation of aquifers is present. SAR data acquired between July 1995 and August 2005 from ERS and ENVISAT sensors have been processed by the SPN and CPT techniques and compared with in situ instrumental measurements assumed as reference. Experimental results have shown that both SPN and CPT techniques provide estimates of the deformation evolution in time with an absolute difference below 6 mm consistently in all comparisons: SPN vs extensometer, CPT vs extensometer and SPN vs CPT. The proposed validation and comparison experiment between both A-DInSAR techniques has been useful to observe their differences and complementarities. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) A web site was designed to disseminate new information on historical landslides and floods in Umbria, central Italy. The historical information was compiled through a thorough review of existing catalogues of historical landslide and flood events, supplemented by an extensive search of local historical archives and chronicles, for the period before 1900. The new catalogue lists 1983 landslide events in the period from 1139 to 2001, and 1956 flood events in the period from 860 to 2001. In the considered period, in Umbria there were at least 1,531 sites affected one or more times by landslides, and at least 1,071 sites affected one or more times by inundations. The seasonal distribution of landslides and inundations was found different before and after 1900, most probably because of incompleteness of the historical record prior to 1900. WebGIS technology was used to disseminate the geographical and thematic information on historical landslides and floods in Umbria. The GIS-based web site is aimed at a diversified audience of experts and private citizens seeking information on geo-hydrological hazards in Umbria. The portable system offers fast deployment with no recalibration and maps both vertical and horizontal features while maintaining optimal flight parameters. The geo-referenced image and 3D point-cloud data can be processed into digital terrain models, digital surface models, and automatically derived 3D city models. [Termes IGN] étalonnage d'instrumentRésumé : (Auteur) Altimetry missions such as Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, GFO and ENVISAT have been widely used in the continental domain over lakes, rivers and wetland although they were mostly dedicated to oceanic studies. Knowledge of the instrumental biases is a key issue. Numerous sites have been dedicated to calibration purposes, either in the oceanic domain (Harvest offshore platform in California, Corsica, Bass Strait in Australia) or over lakes (Lake Erie in United States). A new site (Lake Issykkul in Kirghizstan) is proposed for calibration in the continental domain. This lake is covered by past (T/P) and current radar altimetry satellites (Jason-1, T/P, GFO, and ENVISAT). Several in situ water levels and local meteorological variables are available at the site. Located in a mountainous area, it offers an opportunity for calibration far away from all other existing sites and very different environment contexts. Two GPS campaigns have been conducted on the lake in 2004 and in 2005. They consisted of cruises with stations installed onboard a boat following the satellite ground tracks, and onshore settings. This enabled estimating a bias for each altimeter and each tracking algorithm available. Biases obtained for Envisat, GFO, T/P and Jason-1 using the default ocean tracker (respectively, 48.1 + 6.6, 7.5 + 4.0, 0 + 4.3 and 7.0 + 5.5 cm) agree with biases published at the other calibration sites. For Jason-1, there is a significant disagreement with results obtained in the ocean field (7 cm instead of 13 cm) but is coherent with bias obtained on the Lake Erie site. Erroneous estimates of the sea state bias correction from non-oceanic-like waveforms is discussed as a possible explanation. Errors in the ionospheric, wet and dry tropospheric corrections for the continental domain are also highlighted and quantified.
