[Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) During the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) field experiment in 2006 there was a large increase in the number of radiosonde data over West Africa. This has the potential of improving the numerical weather prediction (NWP) analysis/forecast and the water budget studies over that region. However, it is well known that the humidity from radiosondes can have some errors depending on sonde type, relative humidity (RH), temperature and the age of the sensor and can give rise to dry biases that are typically between 5% and 30% for RH. Three main sonde types were used in the AMMA field experiment: Vaisala RS80A, Vaisala RS92 and MODEM. In this article, a new empirical method is presented by using the operational European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) short‐range forecast as an intermediary dataset for computing biases. The validation of the correction method using global positioning system (GPS) total columnar water vapour (TCWV) confirms that the method is able to correct for a large part of the dry biases associated with the different sonde types. Results from analysis experiments show how the correction of humidity is particularly important in the West African region due to its impact on the development of convection in NWP models. The proposed radiosonde humidity bias correction has been applied to the special AMMA reanalysis experiment performed at ECMWF for the 2006 West African wet monsoon season. This is expected to benefit a wide number of AMMA‐related studies that make use of the reanalysis, in particular those focusing on the water cycle. [Termes IGN] répartition géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) LandScan USA is a 90 m population distribution model that is used for a variety of applications, including emergency management. Models should have a measure of accuracy; however, the accuracy of population distribution models is difficult to determine due to the inclusion of multiple input datasets and the lack of quantifiable, observable (validated) data to confirm model output. Validated data enables quantification of: (1) overall model accuracy and (2) changes in model output at different levels of quality control. This article examines the effect of quality control for two national school datasets incorporated as input in LandScan USA for Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; which had a local, validated school dataset available. The effect of each stage of quality control efforts utilized throughout the LandScan USA process were assessed to determine what level of quality control was required to have a statistically significant change of the model's population distribution. The typical level of quality control for LandScan USA resulted in 36% of schools being moved to the correct location and 20% of missing student enrollments were found, compared to 87% and 98% respectively for the validated dataset. The costs of increasing quality control resulted in a six-fold increase in labor time; however, the additional quality control did not produce statistically significant improvements in the LandScan USA model. Thus, typical quality control efforts for schools in LandScan USA produced a population distribution similar to the validated level of quality control, and can be applied with confidence for policy, planning, and emergency situations. [Termes IGN] infrastructure nationale des données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) This work proposes an architectural style, a pattern, for spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). This style provides a tool and a shared vocabulary to help system architects to design these infrastructures, and facilitates the exchange of knowledge about them. This style is defined under the component-and-connector architectural viewtype, extending the client-server and shared-data styles. The style has been created after analyzing six of the most relevant SDIs and geo-service architectural proposals. Several architectural elements that these proposals have not properly addressed are considered. Three real projects, with published architectural views or models, have been examined to verify the applicability of the style. The proposed style offers a systematization and refinement of knowledge about SDIs, grounded in well-known concepts in software architecture.
