[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The Sjökulla test site is used for testing and calibrating aerial images. The permanent test field is made of four types of gravel (dark gabbro, grey granite, red granite, white limestone) in two sizes (diameters 8–16 mm and 4–8 mm) set in various patterns. The bidirectional reflection properties of the targets together with their temporal changes must be known in order to carry out radiometric and spectral evaluation and calibration. The bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRF) of the gravel have been measured several times in the test fields using portable field goniospectrometers belonging Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI), and once using the European Goniometic Facility (EGO) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) at Ispra, Italy. Detailed BRFs have been obtained, showing features typical to particulate media, e.g. a small bowl shape, strong backscattering, and smooth wavelength dependence. Temporal range measurements over several years show that the black gabbro and red granite are fairly stable, while the grey granite has changed somewhat over the years and the white limestone has experienced dramatic darkening effects, requiring action to be taken. The measured BRF data have increased the usability of the test field considerably. The results are also useful in the development and validation of scattering models for particulate media. The site has proved to be a good test bench for goniospectrometric instruments, too. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The improved ground resolution of state-of-the-art synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors suggests utilizing SAR data for the analysis of urban areas. The appearance of buildings in SAR or interferometric SAR (InSAR) data is characterized by the consequences of the inherent oblique scene illumination, such as layover, occlusion by radar shadow, and multipath signal propagation. Therefore, particularly in dense built-up areas, building reconstruction is often impossible from a single SAR or InSAR measurement alone. But, the reconstruction quality can be significantly improved by a combined analysis of multi-aspect data. In this paper, two approaches are proposed to detect and reconstruct buildings of different size from multi-aspect high-resolution InSAR data sets. Both approaches focus on the recognition of buildings supported by knowledge-based analysis considering the mentioned SAR-specific effects observed in urban areas. Building features are extracted independently for each direction from the magnitude and phase information of the interferometric data. Initial primitives are segmented and afterward projected from slant-range into the world coordinate system. From the fused set of primitives of both flight directions, building hypotheses are generated. The first approach exploits the frequently observed lines of bright double-bounce scattering, which are used for building reconstruction in residential districts. In the case of larger buildings, such as industrial halls, often additional features of roof and facade elements are visible. Therefore, in a second approach, extended buildings are extracted by grouping primitives of different kinds. The two approaches are demonstrated in an urban environment for an InSAR data set, which has spatial resolution of about 30 cm and was taken from two orthogonal flight directions. [Termes IGN] point d'appuiRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution imaging satellites are a valuable and cost effective data acquisition tool for a variety of mapping and GIS applications such as topographic mapping, map updating, orthophoto generation, environmental monitoring, and change detection. Sensor modeling that describes the mathematical relationship between corresponding scene and object coordinates is a prerequisite procedure prior to manipulating the acquired imagery from such systems for mapping purposes. Rigorous and approximate sensor models are the two alternatives for describing the mathematics of the involved imaging process. The former explicitly involves the internal and external characteristics of the imaging sensor to faithfully represent the geometry of the scene formation. On the other hand, approximate modeling can be divided into two categories. The first category simplifies the rigorous model after making some assumptions about the system’s trajectory and/or object space. Gupta and Hartley’s model, parallel projection, self-calibrating direct linear transformation, and modified parallel projection are examples of this category. Other approximate models are based on empirical formulation of the scene-to-ground mathematical relationship. This category includes among others, the well-known Rational Function Model (RFM). This paper addresses several aspects of sensor modeling. Namely, it deals with the expected accuracy from rigorous modeling of imaging satellites as it relates to the number of available ground control points, comparative analysis of approximate and rigorous sensor models, robustness of the reconstruction process against biases in the available sensor characteristics, and impact of incorporating multi-source imagery in a single triangulation mechanism. Following a brief theoretical background, these issues will be presented through experimental results from real datasets captured by satellite and aerial imaging platforms. [Termes IGN] positionnement différentielRésumé : (Auteur) Use of Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry is demonstrated for control of a digital elevation model (DEM) that is synthesized from repeat-pass ERS-1 and 2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery using interferometric SAR (InSAR). Our study area is 15650 km2 of the Barrow, AK coastal plain adjacent to the Arctic Ocean; a vast expanse of tundra, lakes, and arctic wetlands of such low relief as to be nearly devoid of terrain features. The accuracy of the ICESat-derived elevation measurements is assessed by comparison with differential global positioning system (DGPS) data acquired along ICESat ground tracks. The ICESat-derived elevations have a mean accuracy, relative to the DGPS elevations, of 0.01 +0.18 m. ICESat-derived elevations on the Arctic coastal plain provide an excellent source for DEM control. We employ the ICESat-derived ground control points (GCPs) in two distinct InSAR processing steps: 1) selected points are used to perform baseline refinements, which improves the ERS-1 and 2 interferograms and 2) the ICESat-derived GCP position data (latitude, longitude, elevation) are then used as control in mosaicking multiple InSAR-derived OEMs. The resulting ICESat-controlled DEM has a mean accuracy of-1.11 + 6.3m relative to an independent standard, which is a commercial airborne InSAR-derived DEM having 0.5 m rms accuracy. This easily meets DTED-2 standards and suggests that DEMs derived using only ICESat altimetry for ground control would meet similar standards in other regions of low relief.
