This study was designed to gain a historical perspective of changing land use between 1954 and 1985 within the the rural-urban fringe as a means of acquiring insight into the nature of present and potential environmental hazards within these dynamic areas. Land-use overlays were digitized and entered in a GIS to facilitate multitemporal comparisons and integration with other data sets. That revealed that many abandoned areas has reverted to urban undeveloped, riverwash and riparian, and public land. These may present an environmental risk.
