[Termes IGN] processus gaussienRésumé : (auteur) Low-pass filters are commonly used for the processing of airborne gravity observations. In this paper, for the first time, we include the resulting correlations consistently in the functional and stochastic model of residual least-squares collocation. We demonstrate the necessity of removing high-frequency noise from airborne gravity observations, and derive corresponding parameters for a Gaussian low-pass filter. Thereby, we intend an optimal combination of terrestrial and airborne gravity observations in the mountainous area of Colorado. We validate the combination in the frame of our participation in ‘the 1 cm geoid experiment’. This regional geoid modeling inter-comparison exercise allows the calculation of a reference solution, which is defined as the mean value of 13 independent height anomaly results in this area. Our result performs among the best and with 7.5 mm shows the lowest standard deviation to the reference. From internal validation we furthermore conclude that the input from airborne and terrestrial gravity observations is consistent in large parts of the target area, but not necessarily in the highly mountainous areas. Therefore, the relative weighting between these two data sets turns out to be a main driver for the final result, and is an important factor in explaining the remaining differences between various height anomaly results in this experiment. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (auteur) Airborne gravimetry with strapdown inertial sensors has been a valuable tool for many years to fill in the gravity data gaps on the areas not accessible by land. Accuracies of 1 mGal level with off-the-shelf navigation-grade inertial measurement units (IMU) can only be achieved provided that the accelerometer drifts mainly caused by the temperature variations inside the IMU housing are separated from the gravity signal. Although there are several strategies proposed in the literature to deal with this inseparability problem, we use a thermal stabilization system (iTempStab) added on an iNAT-RQH navigation-grade IMU and investigate its performance over a test region in central Turkey with moderate topography and highly qualified ground truth gravity data. Two test flights were performed in 2017 and 2018 with and without iTempStab add-on following almost the same flight trajectories. During the first flight in 2017 with iNAT-RQH only, which lasted almost 5.5 h, there were considerable temperature variations inside the IMU housing from 39.1 to 46.0 °C. A simple thermal correction based on a laboratory calibration done before the flight was applied to the vertical Z-accelerometer in the pre-processing stage. However, temperature changes were within 0.1 °C during the second test flight in 2018 with TempStab add-on. The temperature stabilization gained by the iTempStab add-on produced better cross-over statistics. While the RMSE of the non-adjusted cross-over residuals was about 2.6 mGal, it reduced by 50% with iTempStab add-on. The adjusted cross-over differences of the 2018 flight yielded an RMSE of about 0.5 mGal, which is a remarkable precision for the strapdown gravimetry. The comparison with upward continued ground gravity data at flight altitudes suggests that the thermal stabilization system shows also remarkable improvements in the residual statistics. The range of the residuals decreases from ± 10 to ± 5 mGal, the standard deviation decreases from 2.19 to 0.94 mGal, and the RMSE decreases from 2.24 to 1.48 mGal, respectively, with the iTempStab add-on. It can be concluded that the thermal stabilization system significantly improves the accelerometer stability and therefore the precision and accuracy of the strapdown airborne gravity estimates. [Termes IGN] quasi-géoïdeRésumé : (Auteur) A one arc-minute resolution gravimetric quasigeoid model has been computed for New Zealand, covering the region 25∘S–60∘S and 160∘E–170∘W. It was calculated by Wong and Gore modified Stokes integration using the remove–compute–restore technique with the EIGEN-6C4 global gravity model as the reference field. The gridded gravity data used for the computation consisted of 40,677 land gravity observations, satellite altimetry-derived marine gravity anomalies, historical shipborne marine gravity observations and, importantly, approximately one million new airborne gravity observations. The airborne data were collected with the specific intention of reinforcing the shortcomings of the existing data in areas of rough topography inaccessible to land gravimetry and in coastal areas where shipborne gravimetry cannot be collected and altimeter-derived gravity anomalies are generally poor. The new quasigeoid has a nominal precision of ±48mm on comparison with GPS-levelling data, which is approximately 14mm less than its predecessor NZGeoid09. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentiel localRésumé : (Auteur) Radial basis functions (RBFs) have been used extensively in satellite geodetic applications. However, to the author’s knowledge, their role in processing and modeling airborne gravity data has not yet been fully advocated or extensively investigated in detail. Compared with satellite missions, the airborne data are more suitable for these kinds of localized basis functions especially considering the following facts: (1) Unlike the satellite missions that can provide global or near global data coverage, airborne gravity data are usually geographically limited. (2) It is also band limited in the frequency domain. (3) It is straightforward to formulate the RBF observation equations from an airborne gravimetric system. In this study, a set of band-limited RBF is developed to model and downward continue the airborne gravity data for local geoid improvement. First, EIGEN6c4 coefficients are used to simulate a harmonic field to test the performances of RBF on various sampling, noise, and flight height levels, in order to gain certain guidelines for processing the real data. Here, the RBF method not only successfully recovers the harmonic field but also presents filtering properties due to its particular design in the frequency domain. Next, the software was tested for the GSVS14 (Geoid Slope Validation Survey 2014) area in Iowa as well as for the area around Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by use of the real airborne gravity data from the Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum (GRAV-D) project. By fully utilizing the three-dimensional correlation information among the flight tracks, the RBF can also be used as a data cleaning tool for airborne gravity data adjustment and cleaning. This property is further extended to surface gravity data cleaning, where conventional approaches have various limitations. All the related numerical results clearly show the importance and contribution of the use of the RBF for high- resolution local gravity field modeling. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentielRésumé : (auteur) Regional gravity field modelling by means of remove-compute-restore procedure is nowadays widely applied in different contexts: it is the most used technique for regional gravimetric geoid determination, and it is also used in exploration geophysics to predict grids of gravity anomalies (Bouguer, free-air, isostatic, etc.), which are useful to understand and map geological structures in a specific region. Considering this last application, due to the required accuracy and resolution, airborne gravity observations are usually adopted. However, due to the relatively high acquisition velocity, presence of atmospheric turbulence, aircraft vibration, instrumental drift, etc., airborne data are usually contaminated by a very high observation error. For this reason, a proper procedure to filter the raw observations in both the low and high frequencies should be applied to recover valuable information. In this work, a software to filter and grid raw airborne observations is presented: the proposed solution consists in a combination of an along-track Wiener filter and a classical Least Squares Collocation technique. Basically, the proposed procedure is an adaptation to airborne gravimetry of the Space-Wise approach, developed by Politecnico di Milano to process data coming from the ESA satellite mission GOCE. Among the main differences with respect to the satellite application of this approach, there is the fact that, while in processing GOCE data the stochastic characteristics of the observation error can be considered a-priori well known, in airborne gravimetry, due to the complex environment in which the observations are acquired, these characteristics are unknown and should be retrieved from the dataset itself. The presented solution is suited for airborne data analysis in order to be able to quickly filter and grid gravity observations in an easy way. Some innovative theoretical aspects focusing in particular on the theoretical covariance modelling are presented too. In the end, the goodness of the procedure is evaluated by means of a test on real data retrieving the gravitational signal with a predicted accuracy of about 0.4 mGal.
