[Termes IGN] modèle 3D de l'espace urbainRésumé : (Auteur) The paper focuses mainly on extraction of important topographic objects, like buildings and roads, that have received much attention the last decade. As main input data, aerial imagery is considered, although other data, like from laser scanner, SAR and high-resolution satellite imagery, can be also used. After a short review of recent image analysis trends, and strategy and overall system aspects of knowledge-based image analysis, the paper focuses on aspects of knowledge that can be used for object extraction: types of knowledge, problems in using existing knowledge, knowledge representation and management, current and possible use of knowledge, upgrading and augmenting of knowledge. Finally, an overview on commercial systems regarding automated object extraction and use of a priori knowledge is given. In spite of many remaining unsolved problems and need for further research and development, use of knowledge and semi-automation are the only viable alternatives towards development of useful object extraction systems, as some commercial systems on building extraction and 3D city modelling as well as advanced, practically oriented research have shown. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The verification of existing data is an important task in order to ensure a high level of data quality, such as is needed in geographic information systems (GIS). Today, this work is carried out manually by an operator, who compares vector data from databases with remotely sensed imagery. In this paper, a system for automated road data verification using digital image processing for the extraction of roads from aerial imagery and topological analysis in order to optimise the whole process in terms of reliability and efficiency is presented. The main goal is to call the operator's attention only to parts of the network, where the automated process did not find sufficient evidence of a road. The road extraction is supported by the use of prior knowledge on the global level (whether the road is situated in rural, urban or forest areas), and information on the road geometry and its attributes. The road extraction is executed twice. Firstly, with a strict parameter control ensuring the minimization of false positives and a subsequent evaluation, which denotes roads from the database being accepted or rejected. In a second step, a graph-based search algorithm detects connections, which are missing for an optimised road network. If rejected roads are part of these connections, they are checked again using a more tolerant parameter control. A detailed performance analysis of results shows the applicability of the proposed method for quality control of topographic road databases. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of road networks from aerial images is one of the current challenges in digital photogrammetry and computer vision. In this paper, we present a practical system for 3D road network reconstruction from aerial images using knowledgebased image analysis. In contrast to other approaches, the developed system integrates processing of color image data and information from digital spatial databases, extracts and fuses multiple object cues, takes into account context information, employs existing knowledge, rules and models, and treats each road subclass accordingly. The key of the system is the use of knowledge as much as possible to increase success rate and reliability of the results, working in 2D images and 3D object space, and use of 2D and 3D interaction when needed. Another advantage of the developed system is that it can correctly and reliably handle problematic areas caused by shadows and occlusions. This work is part of a project to improve and update the 1:25,000 vector maps of Switzerland. The system has been implemented as a stand-alone software package, and has been tested on a large number of images with different landscape. In this paper, various parts of the developed system are discussed, and the results of our system in recent benchmark tests conducted independently by our project partner in Switzerland, and the test results with black and white images in a test site in Belgium are presented together with the system performance evaluation. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance d'objetsRésumé : (Auteur) Our goal is to detect changes in an aerial scene by comparing grey scale stereopairs taken several years apart in order to update a geographic database. A set of image locations that have a high likelihood to contain changes will be submitted to a human operator who will either reject the proposed change or validate it and update the database accordingly. We are mainly interested in changes in buildings. To isolate new construction and buildings, which disappear, we provide an algorithm that works in two steps. First, during a focusing phase, we eliminate a large part of the scene without losing any actual changes by comparing a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the two dates. Second, we classify the resulting regions of interest (ROl) based on four images-stereopairs of the area at the two dates. To decide whether or not the R01 contains a change, we classify each of the four images as "building" or "no-building". This classifier is a combination of several decision trees induced from training data. Each node of each decision tree is identified with a graph of features which is more likely to occur on buildings than background. Finally, the classification results at the two different dates are compared. The final set of locations submitted to an operator omits less than 10% of the true changes. The false positive rate represents less than 5% of the scene surface. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3D du bâtiRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic 3D building reconstruction has becoming increasingly important for a number of applications. The reconstruction of buildings using only aerial images as data source has been proven to be a very difficult problem. The complexity of the reconstruction can be greatly reduced by combining the aerial images with other data sources. In this paper, we describe a 3D building reconstruction method that integrates the aerial image analysis with information from large-scale 2D Geographic Information System (GIS) databases and domain knowledge. By combining the images with GIS data, the specific strengths of both the images (high resolution, accuracy, and large-information content) and the GIS data (relatively simple interpretation) are exploited. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data is introduced. The approach classifies not single pixels but groups of pixels that represent already existing objects in a GIS database. The approach is based on a supervised maximum likelihood classification. The multispectral bands grouped by objects and very different measures that can be derived from multispectral bands represent the n-dimensional feature space for the classification. The training areas are derived automatically from the geographical information system (GIS) database. After an introduction into the general approach, different input channels for the classification are defined and discussed. The results of a test on two test areas are presented. Afterwards, further measures, which can improve the result of the classification and enable the distinction between more land-use classes than with the introduced approach, are presented. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing from airborne and spaceborne platforms provides valuable data for mapping, environmental monitoring, disaster management and civil and military intelligence. However, to explore the full value of these data, the appropriate information has to be extracted and presented in standard format to import it into geo-information systems and thus allow efficient decision processes. The object-oriented approach can contribute to powerful automatic and semiautomatic analysis for most remote sensing applications. Synergetic use to pixel-based or statistical signal processing methods explores the rich information contents. Here, we explain principal strategies of object-oriented analysis, discuss how the combination with fuzzy methods allows implementing expert knowledge and describe a representative example for the proposed workflow from remote sensing imagery to GIS. The strategies are demonstrated using the first object-oriented image analysis software on the market, eCognition, which provides an appropriate link between remote sensing imagery and GIS.
