[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Physically-based, fully-distributed hydrologic models simulate hydrologic state variables in space and time while using information regarding heterogeneity in climate, land use, topography and hydrogeology. Since fine spatio-temporal resolution and increased process dimension will have large data requirements, there is a practical need to strike a balance between descriptive detail and computational load for a particular model application. In this paper, we present a flexible domain decomposition strategy for efficient and accurate integration of the physiographic, climatic and hydrographic watershed features. The approach takes advantage of different GIS feature types while generating high-quality unstructured grids with user-specified geometrical and physical constraints. The framework is able to anchor the efficient capture of spatially distributed and temporally varying hydrologic interactions and also ingest the physical prototypes effectively and accurately from a geodatabase. The proposed decomposition framework is a critical step in implementing high quality, multiscale, multiresolution, temporally adaptive and nested grids with least computational burden. We also discuss the algorithms for generating the framework using existing GIS feature objects. The framework is successfully being used in a finite volume based integrated hydrologic model. The framework is generic and can be used in other finite element/volume based hydrologic models. [Termes IGN] ressources en eauRésumé : (Auteur) The National Elevation, Hydrography and Land Cover datasets of the United States have been synthesized into a geospatial dataset called NHDPlus which is referenced to a spheroidal Earth, provides geospatial data layers for topography on 30 m rasters, and has vector coverages for catchments and river reaches. In this article, we examine the integration of NHDPlus with the Noah-distributed model. In order to retain compatibility with atmospheric models, Noah-distributed utilizes surface domain fields referenced to a spherical rather than spheroidal Earth in its computation of vertical land surface/atmosphere water and energy budgets (at coarse resolution) as well as horizontal cell-to-cell water routing across the land surface and through the shallow subsurface (at fine resolution). Two data-centric issues affecting the linkage between Noah-distributed and NHDPlus are examined: (1) the shape of the Earth; and (2) the linking of gridded landscape with a vector representation of the stream and river network. At mid-latitudes the errors due to projections between spherical and spheroidal representations of the Earth are significant. A catchment-based "pour point" technique is developed to link the raster and vector data to provide lateral inflow from the landscape to a one-dimensional river model. We conclude that, when Noah-distributed is run uncoupled to an atmospheric model, it is advantageous to implement Noah-distributed at the native spatial scale of the digital elevation data and the spheroidal Earth of the NHDPlus dataset rather than transforming the NHDPlus dataset to fit the coarser resolution and spherical Earth shape of the Noah-distributed model. [Termes IGN] structure hiérarchique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The monolithic structure of process-based environmental models has become a major obstacle in dealing with complex environmental problems. Interoperability is the inevitable direction for future generations of models. This article discusses the identification of equation functions for interoperable environmental models. These equations represent environmental processes that are implemented as algorithms in the models. The identification of common equations in existing models helps develop equation components that can be assembled to form customized models. In the context of a semantic reference system, formal concept analysis is used to decompose existing models, extract the common equations embedded in them, and organize these equations in a hierarchy of a concept lattice. The hierarchical structure of the lattice helps identify the relationships between equations across different levels and within the same level. Insights drawn from the concept lattice provide valuable information for the framework design of customized models and the adaptation of algorithms from existing models for the development of equation components. An important hydrological process, surface runoff, is used as an example of an environmental process to illustrate the analysis. To support the discussion, a customized surface runoff model is built using three components extracted from several existing hydrological models to predict surface runoff of a watershed.
