[Termes IGN] prédictionRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce in this paper a new predictive modelling method to analyse geographic data known as sparse grids. The sparse grids method has been developed for data-mining applications. It is a machine-learning approach to data analysis and has great applicability to the analysis and understanding of geographic data and processes. Sparse grids are a subset of grid-based predictive modelling approaches. The advantages they have over other grid-based methods are that they use fewer parameters and are less susceptible to the curse of dimensionality. These mean that they can be applied to many geographic problems and are readily adapted to the analysis of geographically local samples. We demonstrate the utility of the sparse grids system using a large and spatially extensive data set of regolith samples from Weipa, Australia. We apply both global and local analyses to find relationships between the regolith data and a set of geomorphometric, hydrologic and spectral variables. The results of the global analyses are much better than those generated using an artificial neural network, and the local analysis results are better than those generated using moving window regression for the same analysis window size. The sparse grids system provides a potentially powerful tool for the analysis and understanding of geographic processes and relationships. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) WebGIS (also known as web-based GIS and Internet GIS) denotes a type of Geographic Information System (GIS), whose client is implemented in a Web browser. WebGISs have been developed and used extensively in real-world applications. However, when such a complex web-based system involves the dissemination of large volumes of data and/or massive user interactions, its performance can become an issue. In this paper, we first identify several major potential performance problems with WebGIS. Then, we discuss several possible techniques to improve the performance. These techniques include the use of pyramids and hash indices on the server side to handle large images. To resolve server-side conflicts originating from concurrent massive access and user interactions, we suggest clustering and multithreading techniques. Multithreading is also used to break down the long sequential, layer-based data access to concurrent data access on the client side. Caching is suggested as a means to enhance concurrent data access for the same datasets on both the server and the client sides. The technique of client-side dynamic data requests is used to improve data transmission. Compressed binary representation is implemented on both sides to reduce transmission volume. We also compare the performance of a prototype WebGIS with and without these techniques. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Current computing systems do not support human work effectively. They restrict human-computer interaction to one mode at a time and are designed with an assumption that use will be by individuals (rather than groups), directing (rather than interacting with) the system. To support the ways in which humans work and interact, a new paradigm for computing is required that is multimodal, rather than unimodal, collaborative, rather than personal, and dialogue-enabled, rather than unidirectional. To address this challenge, we have developed an approach for designing natural, multimodal, multiuser dialogue-enabled interfaces to geographic information systems that make use of large-screen displays and integrated speech-gesture interaction. After outlining our goals and providing a brief overview of relevant literature, we introduce the Dialogue-Assisted Visual Environment for Geoinformation (DAVE-G). DAVE - G is being developed using a human-centred systems approach that contextualizes development and assessment in the current practice of potential users. In keeping with this human-centred approach, we outline a user task analysis and associated scenario development that implementation is designed to support (grounded in the context of emergency response), review our own precursors to the current prototype system and discuss how the current prototype extends upon past work, provide a detailed description of the architecture that underlies the current system, and introduce the approach implemented for enabling mixed-initiative human-computer dialogue. We conclude with a discussion of goals for future research. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The Government of Ghana is about to take steps under its Land Administration Project to initiate the adoption of geographical information systems (GIS) in the administration of land. This paper identifies some of the challenges for Ghana's leading lands agency, the Lands Commission Secretariat, and highlights problems such as the paucity of reliable data sets and lack of standards. One of the major planning issues in Accra is that of building encroachments, for which no digital information is currently available. The paper reports on a pilot study to record encroachments on public land and demonstrates the type of inconsistencies that are apparent between the planning and cadastral data sets that do exist. The paper emphasizes that appropriate applications of GIS in Ghana's land sector are those that consider the political, social and institutional contexts within which GIS is to be operationalized. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) In disaster insurance and reinsurance, GIS has been used to visualize and manage geospatial data and to help vulnerability and risk analysis for years. However, hazard insurance is a multidisciplinary issue that involves complex factors and uncertainty. GIS, if used alone, has limited functionality due to poor incorporation of intelligence and spatial statistics. The Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) presented in this paper, addresses some of the deficiencies of traditional GIS, by providing powerful tools to support disaster insurance pricing that involves procedural and declarative knowledge. In the SDSS, the knowledge-based system shell, using the open-source CLIPS and supporting fuzziness and uncertainty, can be applied in at least three phases: hazard simulation, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation of risk, and query for insurance pricing. The libraries of statistics and spatial statistics provide a robust support for analysis of spatial factors, including spatial correlation between zones vulnerable to hazard and spatial variation of exposures. The GIS components provide sophisticated visualization and database management support for geospatial data, helping easily locate the insured points and risk zones as well as exploratory analysis of spatial data. Standard database management interfaces are used to manage other aspatial data. COM, an industry-wide interface protocol, tightly integrates these technologies (the expert shell, GIS, spatial statistics and DBM within an integral system), and can be used to develop mixed complex algorithms in support of other COM objects. An application of typhoon insurance pricing is demonstrated with a case study in Guangdong, China. Developed as a suite of generic tools with abilities to deal with the complex problem of disaster insurance involving spatial factors and field knowledge, this prototype SDSS can also be applied to other disaster insurance and fields that involve similar spatial decision making.
