The identifying relevance of a feature or feature set is an important task for designing an effective classification scheme. Here, an ensemble of random forests (RF) classifiers is realized on the basis of relevance of features. Correlation‐based Feature Selection (CFS) was utilized to assess the relevance of a subset of features by studying the individual predictive ability of each feature along with the degree of redundancy between them. Predictability of RF was greatly improved by random selection of the relevant features in each of the splits. An investigation was carried out on different types of images from the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (Landsat ETM+) and QuickBird sensors. It has been observed that the performance of the RF classifier was significantly improved while using the optimal set of relevant features compared with a few of the most advanced supervised classifiers such as maximum likelihood classifier (MLC), Navie Bayes, multi‐layer perception (MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and bagging. [Termes IGN] linéamentRésumé : (auteur) Certainly, lineament mapping occupies an important place in several studies, including geology, hydrogeology and topography etc. With the help of remote sensing techniques, lineaments can be better identified due to strong advances in used data and methods. This allowed exceeding the usual classical procedures and achieving more precise results. The aim of this work is the comparison of ASTER, Landsat-8 and Sentinel 1 data sensors in automatic lineament extraction. In addition to image data, the followed approach includes the use of the pre-existing geological map, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) as well as the ground truth. Through a fully automatic approach consisting of a combination of edge detection algorithm and line-linking algorithm, we have found the optimal parameters for automatic lineament extraction in the study area. Thereafter, the comparison and the validation of the obtained results showed that the Sentinel 1 data are more efficient in restitution of lineaments. This indicates the performance of the radar data compared to those optical in this kind of study. Arctic TCWV distribution, trends, and anomalies for the 2001–2015 period, broken down into seasons and months, are analysed. Enhanced local spring TCWV trends above the terrestrial Arctic regions are discussed in relation to land snow cover and vegetation changes. Upward TCWV trends above the oceanic areas are discussed in lien with sea ice extent and sea surface temperature changes. Increased winter TCWV (up to 40%) south of the Svalbard archipelago are observed; these trends are probably driven by a local warming and sea ice extent decline. Similarly, the Barents/Kara regions underwent wet trends (up to 40%), also associated with winter/fall local sea ice loss. Positive late summer TCWV trends above the western Greenland and Beaufort seas (about 20%) result from enhanced upper ocean warming and thereby a local coastal decline in ice extent. The Mackenzie and Siberia enhanced TCWV trends (about 25%) during spring are found to be associated with coincident decreased snow cover and increased vegetation, as a result of the earlier melt onset. Results show drier summers in the Eurasia and western Alaska regions, thought to be affected by changes in albedo from changing vegetation. Other TCWV anomalies are also presented and discussed in relation to the dramatic decline in sea ice extent and the exceptional rise in sea surface temperature. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The estimation of various forest inventory attributes from high spatial resolution airborne remote sensing data has been widely examined and proved to be successful at the experimental level. Nevertheless, the operational use of these data in automated procedures to support forest inventories and forest management is still limited to a small number of cases. The reasons for this are high data costs, limited availability of remote sensing data over large areas and resistance from practitioners. In this review the main aim is to stimulate debate about spaceborne very high resolution stereo-imagery (VHRSI) as an alternative to airborne remote sensing data by presenting: (1) a case study on the retrieval of stand density, aboveground biomass and tree species using a set of easy-to-calculate variables obtained from VHRSI data combined with image processing and nonparametric classification and modelling approaches; and (2) the results of an expert opinion survey on the potential of VHRSI as compared with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), hyperspectral and airborne digital imagery to derive a range of forest inventory attributes. In the case study, stand density was estimated with r² = 0.71 and RMSE = 156 trees (rel./norm. RMSE = 24.9 per cent/12.4 per cent), biomass with r² = 0.64 and RMSE of 36.7 t/ha (rel./norm. RMSE = 20.0 per cent/12.8 per cent) while tree species classifications with five species reached overall accuracies of 84.2 per cent (kappa = 0.81). These results were comparable to earlier studies in the same test site, obtained with more expensive airborne acquisitions. Expert opinions were more diverse for VHRSI and aerial photographs (Shannon index values of 0.94 and 0.97) than for LiDAR and hyperspectral data (Shannon index values 0.69 and 0.88). In our opinion, this reflects the current state-of-the-art in the application of VHRSI for automatically retrieving forest inventory attributes. The number of studies using these data is still limited, and the full potential of these datasets is not yet completely explored. Compared with LiDAR and hyperspectral data, which both mostly received high scores for forest inventory products matching the sensor systems’ strengths, VHRSI and aerial photographs received more homogeneous scores indicating their potential as multi-purpose instruments to collect forest inventory information. In summary, considering the simpler acquisition, reasonable price and the comparably easy data format and handling of VHRSI compared with other sensor types, we recommend further research on the application of these data for supporting operational forest inventories.
