[Termes IGN] Yunnan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Changes in forest composition impact ecological services, and are considered important factors driving global climate change. A hybrid sampling method along with a modelling approach to map current and past land cover in Kunming, China is reported. MODIS land cover (2001–2011) data-sets were used to detect pixels with no apparent change. Around 3000 ‘no change points’ were systematically selected and sampled using Google Earth’s high-resolution imagery. Thirty-five per cent of these points were verified and used for training and validation. We used Random forests to classify multi-temporal Landsat imagery. Results show that forest cover has had a net decrease of 14385 ha (1.3% of forest area), which was primary converted to shrublands (11%), urban and barren land (2.7%) and agriculture (2.5%). Our validation indicates an overall accuracy (Kappa) of 82%. Our methodology can be used to consistently map the dynamics of land cover change in similar areas with minimum costs. In this study, we investigated the potential of satellite hyperspectral imagery in regional forest species mapping by employing a pixel-based and an object-based nearest neighbour classifier in two different Mediterranean study areas. The overall thematic accuracy of the produced maps was assessed using reference data collected in the field and ranged between 0.72 and 0.83. No approach was found to be superior for the study areas. The McNemar test showed no statistically significant difference at the 95% confidence level in the classification accuracies achieved by the two approaches. Both pixel- and object-based approaches provide useful maps, suggesting that regional forest species mapping from space has much potential. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (auteur) Context : Variation in photosynthetic activity of trees induced by climatic stress can be effectively evaluated using remote sensing data. Although adverse effects of climate on temperate forests have been subjected to increased scrutiny, the suitability of remote sensing imagery for identification of drought stress in such forests has not been explored fully.
Aim : The study seeks to evaluate the sensitivity of MODIS-based vegetation index to heat and drought stress in temperate forests, and to explore the differences in stress response of oaks and beech.
Methods : We identified 8 oak and 13 beech pure and mature stands, each covering between 4 and 13 MODIS pixels. For each pixel, we extracted a time series of MODIS NDVI from 2000 to 2010. We identified all sequences of continuous unseasonal NDVI decline to be used as the response variable indicative of environmental stress. Neural network-based regression modelling was then applied to identify the climatic variables that best explain observed NDVI declines.
Results : Tested variables explained 84–97 % of the variation in NDVI, whilst air temperature-related climate extremes were found to be the most influential. Beech showed a linear response to the most influential climatic predictors, while oak responded in a unimodal pattern suggesting a better coping mechanism.
Conclusions : MODIS NDVI has proved sufficiently sensitive as a stand-level indicator of climatic stress acting upon temperate broadleaf forests, leading to its potential use in predicting drought stress from meteorological observations and improving parameterisation of forest stress indices.

[Termes IGN] image optiqueRésumé : (auteur) Land-Cover databases (LC-DB) are very useful for environmental purposes, but need to be semantically detailed to provide robust and instructive spatial indicators. Moreover, remote sensed data allow to cover large areas with high temporal resolution. Such multi-temporal data are very useful input to discriminate LC classes. Nevertheless, automatic fusion method need to be developed to provide high quality LC-DB. In this paper, several fusion methods are proposed and introduced in an existing Land-Cover mapping framework. Those fusion methods allow to take advantage of multi-temporal data. Those methods are compared, and assessed thanks to a very high resolution LC-DB.
