[Termes IGN] orthorectificationRésumé : (Auteur) China–Brazil Earth Resource Satellite (CBERS) imagery is identified as one of the potential data sources for monitoring Earth surface dynamics in the event of a Landsat data gap. Currently available multispectral images from the High Resolution CCD (Charge Coupled Device) Camera (HRCC) on-board CBERS satellites (CBERS-2 and CBERS-2B) are not precisely geo-referenced and orthorectified. The geometric accuracy of the HRCC multispectral image product is found to be within 2–11 km. The use of CBERS-HRCC multispectral images to monitor Earth surface dynamics therefore necessitates accurate geometric correction of these images. This paper presents an automated method for geo-referencing and orthorectifying the multispectral images from the HRCC imager on-board CBERS satellites. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) Level 1T (L1T) imagery provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is employed as reference for geometric correction. The proposed method introduces geometric distortions in the reference image prior to registering it with the CBERS-HRCC image. The performance of the geometric correction method was quantitatively evaluated using a total of 100 images acquired over the Andes Mountains and the Amazon rainforest, two areas in South America representing vastly different landscapes. The geometrically corrected HRCC images have an average geometric accuracy of 17.04 m (CBERS-2) and 16.34 m (CBERS-2B). While the applicability of the method for attaining sub-pixel geometric accuracy is demonstrated here using selected images, it has potential for accurate geometric correction of the entire archive of CBERS-HRCC multispectral images. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) The urban heat island (UHI) refers to the phenomenon of higher atmospheric and surface temperatures occurring in urban areas than in the surrounding rural areas. Mitigation of the UHI effects via the configuration of green spaces and sustainable design of urban environments has become an issue of increasing concern under changing climate. In this paper, the effects of the composition and configuration of green space on land surface temperatures (LST) were explored using landscape metrics including percentage of landscape (PLAND), edge density (ED) and patch density (PD). An oasis city of Aksu in Northwestern China was used as a case study. The metrics were calculated by moving window method based on a green space map derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, and LST data were retrieved from Landsat TM thermal band. A normalized mutual information measure was employed to investigate the relationship between LST and the spatial pattern of green space. The results showed that while the PLAND is the most important variable that elicits LST dynamics, spatial configuration of green space also has significant effect on LST. Though, the highest normalized mutual information measure was with the PLAND (0.71), it was found that the ED and PD combination is the most deterministic factors of LST than the unique effects of a single variable or the joint effects of PLAND and PD or PLAND and ED. Normalized mutual information measure estimations between LST and PLAND and ED, PLAND and PD and ED and PD were 0.7679, 0.7650 and 0.7832, respectively. A combination of the three factors PLAND, PD and ED explained much of the variance of LST with a normalized mutual information measure of 0.8694. Results from this study can expand our understanding of the relationship between LST and street trees and vegetation, and provide insights for sustainable urban planning and management under changing climate. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) L'objectif principal de ce travail est de produire, à l'aide des images satellitaires Landsat TM, des cartes d'occupation du sol à différentes dates afin d'évaluer l'efficacité du programme des transferts de la gestion forestière aux communautés de base locales. Le site considéré est la commune de Didy, dans la région d'Alaotra-Mangoro, à la partie Centre-Nord de Madagascar. Les images multispectrales acquises à différentes dates ont été tout d'abord soumises à des corrections atmosphériques puis classifiées pour chaque date à l'aide de la méthode de classification non paramétrique SVM (Séparateur à Vaste Marge). Les résultats obtenus montrent en général des impacts positifs de l'installation des transferts de gestion (TG) sur le ralentissement des défrichements et le maintien de la couverture forestière. [Termes IGN] modèle météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A technique is presented to produce real-time, daily vegetation composites at 0.01° resolution (~1 km) over the Conterminous United States (CONUS) for use in the NASA Land Information System (LIS) and weather prediction models. Green vegetation fraction (GVF) is derived from direct-broadcast swaths of normalized difference vegetation index from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the NASA Earth Observing System satellites. The real-time data and increased resolution compared to the 0.144° (~16 km) resolution monthly GVF climatology in community models result in an improved representation of vegetation in high-resolution models, especially in complex terrain. The MODIS GVF fields show seasonal variations that are similar to the community model climatology, and respond realistically to temperature and precipitation anomalies. The wet spring and summer 2010 over the U.S. Plains led to higher regional GVF than in the climatology. The GVF substantially decreased over the U.S. Southern Plains from 2010 to 2011, consistent with the transition to extreme drought in summer 2011. LIS simulations depict substantial sensitivity to the MODIS GVF, with regional changes in heat fluxes around 100 Wm-2 over the northern U.S. in June 2010. CONUS LIS simulations during the 2010 warm season indicate that the larger MODIS GVF in the western U.S. led to higher latent heat fluxes and initially lower sensible heat fluxes, with a net drying effect on the soil. With time, the drier soil eventually lead to higher mean sensible heat fluxes such that the total surface energy output increased by late summer 2010 over the western U.S. A sensitivity simulation of a severe weather event using real-time MODIS GVF data results in systematic changes to low-level temperature, moisture, and instability fields, and improves the evolution of simulated precipitation. [Termes IGN] pouvoir de résolution spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a novel spatial and spectral fusion model (SASFM) that uses sparse matrix factorization to fuse remote sensing imagery with different spatial and spectral properties. By combining the spectral information from sensors with low spatial resolution (LSaR) but high spectral resolution (HSeR) (hereafter called HSeR sensors), with the spatial information from sensors with high spatial resolution (HSaR) but low spectral resolution (LSeR) (hereafter called HSaR sensors), the SASFM can generate synthetic remote sensing data with both HSaR and HSeR. Given two reasonable assumptions, the proposed model can integrate the LSaR and HSaR data via two stages. In the first stage, the model learns from the LSaR data a spectral dictionary containing pure signatures, and in the second stage, the desired HSaR and HSeR data are predicted using the learned spectral dictionary and the known HSaR data. The SASFM is tested with both simulated data and actual Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquisitions, and it is also compared to other representative algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the SASFM outperforms other algorithms in generating fused imagery with both the well-preserved spectral properties of MODIS and the spatial properties of ETM+. Generated imagery with simultaneous HSaR and HSeR opens new avenues for applications of MODIS and ETM+.
