[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Automatic mapping of urban materials from remotely sensed radiance images remains difficult because of the complex phenomena induced by relief. Indeed, shadows and environment effects disrupt the radiance reaching the sensor. The measured radiance also depends on the illumination conditions of the observed area. This paper describes a new physical model, ICARE, able to solve the radiative transfer inversion problem in urban areas, in the reflective domain (0.4–2.5 µm), from high spatial and spectral resolution images. This new approach takes into account the relief, the spatial heterogeneity of the scene and atmospheric effects, in order to extract rigorously the ground surface reflectance. The resolution method consists of modelling separately the irradiance and radiance components at ground and sensor levels. Three input data are required to solve this inverse problem: atmospheric parameters (aerosol type and visibility), 3D digital vector models of the scene, and spectral at-sensor calibrated images of the scene. The validation of ICARE is checked through the CAPITOUL field campaign, carried out over Toulouse (France). Measurements were performed using two airborne Pelican image systems consisting of 8 high spatial (20 cm) and spectral (30 nm) resolution cameras. Results are presented over typical urban structures in Toulouse center. ICARE performance is expected to be better than 0.04 in the reflectance retrieval, even in shadowed areas. To quantify the gain brought by ICARE, a comparison between classification based on radiance and retrieved reflectance images, obtained by inversion, is introduced. The results show that the classification is improved from 54% for a flat ground assumption to 74% using ICARE. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) While the spatial resolution of remotely sensed data has improved, multispectral imagery is still not sufficient for urban classification. Problems include the difficulty in discriminating between trees and grass, the misclassification of buildings due to diverse roof compositions and shadow effects, and the misclassification of cars on roads. Recently, lidar (light detection and ranging) data have been integrated with remotely sensed data to obtain better classification results. In this study, we first conducted maximum likelihood classification (MLC) experiments, a traditional pixel-based classification method, to identify features suitable for urban classification using lidar data and aerial imagery. The addition of lidar height data improved the overall accuracy by up to 28 and 18 percent, respectively, compared to cases with only red–green–blue (RGB) and multispectral imagery. To further improve classification, we propose a knowledge-based classification system (KBCS) that includes a three-level height, “asphalt road, vegetation, and non-vegetation” (A–V–N) classification rule-based scheme and knowledge-based correction (KBC). The proposed KBCS improved overall accuracy by 12 and 7 percent compared to maximum likelihood and object-based classification, respectively. [Termes IGN] visée obliqueRésumé : (Auteur) Because of the intuitive human perception of the oblique view, photogrammetrists' attention has recently returned to oblique images. The demand for oblique imagery has been notably pushed by digital representations of the globe such as Microsoft's Virtual Earth and by the development of special GIS viewers including those by Pictometry and MultiVision. In this contribution the broad spectrum of applications of oblique images is presented. Most commonly oblique images are acquired with flexible digital airborne camera systems, which allow for easy collection of such imagery with photogrammetric quality. The digital airborne remote sensing system PFIFF developed at Rostock University will be introduced briefly. However, flight planning for oblique imagery differs from that for vertical aerial surveys. Two test flights with mono and stereo oblique images are presented. The data processing, display and measurement within oblique images from different perspectives requires new software such as MultiVision. Oblique images may also be used to texture 3D city models. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Road junctions are important components of a road network. However, they are usually not explicitly modelled in existing road extraction approaches. In this research, road junctions are modelled in detail as area objects and an approach is proposed for their automatic extraction through the use of an existing geospatial database. Prior knowledge derived from a topographic geospatial database is used to facilitate the extraction. A new snake-based approach is proposed that makes use of the "ziplock snake" concept and whose external force is a combination of the gradient vector flow (GVF) force and the balloon force in order to delineate the junction border. Road arm extraction results provide fixed boundary conditions for the proposed snake. The approach was tested using aerial black-and-white Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) ortho-images of 0·1 m ground resolution taken from suburban and rural areas. The results obtained demonstrate the validity of this approach. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a generic scheme to extract traffic information from both optical satellite imagery and optical airborne image sequences. The extraction is based on an explicit semantic model of traffic, from which, depending on the characteristics of the input data, different strategies for vehicle detection, vehicle queue extraction and motion estimation are derived. The model comprises different scales to exploit the scale-dependent properties of traffic imaged by optical sensors. It is furthermore extended by context information to include knowledge about background objects as well as metadata from a road database in a consistent way. Various tests with different input data have been carried out and compared with manually acquired ground truth data of vehicles and vehicle tracks. The results show clearly the high potential of airborne and spaceborne traffic monitoring, but also indicate room for methodological improvements and exhibit some inherent sensor-related drawbacks.
