[Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) Exploring the possibility to produce nation-wide forest attribute maps using stereophotogrammetry of aerial images, the national terrain model and data from the National Forest Inventory (NFI). The study areas are four image acquisition blocks in mid- and south Sweden. Regression models were developed and applied to 12.5 m × 12.5 m raster cells for each block and validation was done with an independent dataset of forest stands. Model performance was compared for eight different forest types separately and the accuracies between forest types clearly differs for both image- and LiDAR methods, but between methods the difference in accuracy is small at plot level. At stand level, the root mean square error in percent of the mean (RMSE%) were ranging: from 7.7% to 10.5% for mean height; from 12.0% to 17.8% for mean diameter; from 21.8% to 22.8% for stem volume; and from 17.7% to 21.1% for basal area. This study clearly shows that aerial images from the national image program together with field sample plots from the NFI can be used for large area forest attribute mapping. [Termes IGN] orthophotoplan numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) A novel seam detection approach based on vector building maps is presented for low-attitude aerial orthoimage mosaicking. The approach tracks the centerlines between vector buildings to generate the candidate seams that avoid crossing buildings existing in maps. The candidate seams are then refined by considering their surrounding pixels to minimize the visual transition between the images to be mosaicked. After the refinement of the candidate seams, the final seams further bypass most of the buildings that are not updated into vector maps. Finally, three groups of aerial imagery from different urban densities are employed to test the proposed approach. The experimental results illustrate the advantages of the proposed approach in avoiding the crossing of buildings. The computational efficiency of the proposed approach is also significantly higher than that of Dijkstra’s algorithm. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation canopy structure plays an important role in the partitioning of incident solar radiation, photosynthesis, transpiration, and other scalar fluxes. The vertical foliage distribution of the plant canopy is represented by leaf area density (LAD), which is defined as the one-sided leaf area per unit volume. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) offers the possibility to characterize the 3-D variation of LAD over space, which still remains a challenge to estimate. Moreover, the low density of point cloud data generally offered by airborne LiDAR may be insufficient for accurate LAD estimation in dense overlapping forest canopies. We develop a method for the estimation of the LAD profile using a combination of airborne LiDAR and hyperspectral data using a feature-based data fusion approach. After identifying vegetation species using hyperspectral data, point cloud LiDAR data is used in a “tree-shaped” voxel approach to characterize the LAD of trees in a riparian forest setting. We also propose a set of relationships on simple geometry of overlap for the construction of tree shaped voxels. In a forest setting with overlapping canopies, the results indicate that the tree-shaped voxels are better able to attribute the LAD to the upper and middle parts of the overall canopy as well as individual tall and short trees compared with traditional cylindrical voxels. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional (3D) data from light detection and ranging (lidar) sensor have proven advantageous in the remote sensing domain for characterization of object structure and dimensions. Fusion-based approaches of lidar and aerial imagery also becoming popular. In this study, aerial color (RGB) imagery, along with co-registered airborne discrete lidar data were used to separate vegetation and buildings from other urban classes/cover-types, as a precursory step towards the assessment of urban forest biomass. Both spectral and structural features such as object height, distribution of surface normals from the lidar, and a novel vegetation metric derived from combined lidar and RGB imagery, referred to as the lidar-infused vegetation index (LDVI) were used in this classification method. The proposed algorithm was tested on different cityscape regions to verify its robustness. Results showed a good separation of buildings and vegetation from other urban classes with on average an overall classification accuracy of 92 percent, with a kappa statistic of 0.85. These results bode well for the operational fusion of lidar and RGB imagery, often flown on the same platform, towards improved characterization of the urban forest and built environments.
