[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf area index (LAI) collected in a needle-leaf forest site near Ruokolahti, Finland, during a field campaign in June 14-21, 2000, WA a, used to validate Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradionieter (MODIS) LAI algorithm. The field LAI data was first related to 30-m resolution Enhanced Thermal Mapper Plus (ETM+) images using empirical methods to create a high-resolution LAI map. The analysis of empirical approaches indicates that preliminary segmentation of the image followed by empirical modeling with the resulting patches, was an effective approach to developing an LAI validation surface. Comparison of the aggregated high-resolution LAI map and corresponding MODIS LAI retrievals suggests satisfactory behavior of the MODIS LAI algorithm although variation in MODIS LAI product is higher than expected. The MODIS algorithm, adjusted to high resolution, generally overestimates the LAI due to the influence of the understory vegetation. This indicates the need for improvements in the algorithm. An improved correlation between field measurements and the reduced simple ratio (RSR) suggests that the shortwave infrared (SWIR) band may provide valuable information for needle-leaf forests. In this study, we utilize IKONOS, Landsat 7 ETM+, and airborne scanning light detection and ranging (lidar) to quantify coniferous forest and understory grass coverages in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated ecosystem in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Linear spectral mixture analyses of IKONOS and ETM+ data were used to isolate spectral endmembers (bare soil, understory grass, and tree/shade) and calculate their subpixel fractional coverages. We then compared these endmember cover estimates to similar cover estimates derived from lidar data and field measures. The IKONOS-derived tree/shade fraction was significantly correlated with the field-measured canopy effective leaf area index (LAIe) (r2 = 0.55, p Numéro de notice : A2004-235 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2003.11.003 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2003.11.003 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26762

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for landslide susceptibility mapping using an integrated remote sensing and GIS approach is presented. A part of the Darjeeling Himalaya was selected for the model execution. IRS satellite data, topographic maps, field data, and other informative maps were used as inputs to the study. Important terrain factors, contributing to landslide occurrences in the region, were identified and corresponding thematic data layers were generated. These data layers represent the geological, topographical, and hydrological conditions of the terrain. A numerical rating scheme for the factors was developed for spatial data analysis in a GIS. The resulting landslide susceptibility map delineates the area into different zones of four relative susceptibility classes: high, moderate, low, and very low. The susceptibility map was validated by correlating the landslide frequencies of different classes. This has shown a close agreement with the existing field instability condition. The effectiveness of the map was also confirmed by the high statistically significant value of a chi-square test. [Termes IGN] méthode robusteRésumé : (Auteur) The fused Bayesian-regularization (FBR) method from a companion paper provides a rigorous theoretical formalism for optimal estimation of the power spatial spectrum pattern (SSP) of the wave field scattered from the probing surface as it is required for enhanced radar imaging of the remotely sensed scenes. Being nonlinear and solution-dependent, the optimal FBR method requires extremely complex nonlinear solution-dependent operator inversions and, therefore, cannot be recommended as a numerically realizable estimator of the SSP. Here, we design a family of robust easy-to-implement FBR algorithms, provide the relevant computational recipes, and discuss their performances. We comment on the practical aspects of the robustified FBR estimators, such as numerical implementation and improvement in the output SNR. The advantage in using the proposed robust FBR method is demonstrated through simulations of enhancing the SAR images formed using the conventional matched filtering of the trajectory signal. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Estimating the water status of vegetation is one of the most important elements in assessing forest fire danger. In this paper, laboratory measurement confirmed a relationship between leaf water status and the normalized difference water index (NDWI), derived from nearinfrared and shortwave-infrared spectral data. Two results were confirmed: (a) NDWI is related to equivalent water thickness, and, (b) in addition to NDWI, the quantity of leaf material must be known in order to estimate vegetation dryness. Based on these findings, the authors developed a vegetation dryness index (VDI) to estimate global vegetation water content. VDI values, calculated by using SPOT/VEGETATION data, were applied to data from a 1998 forest fire in the Russian Far East. This led to two results: (a) VDI was useful for detecting areas with a high potential for ignition, and (b) VDI may have been able to detect the fire-spread direction.
