A post-classification comparison approach was used to examine land-use/land-cover change trajectories, which emphasis is on the conversions from vegetation or agropasture to impervious surface area, from vegetation to agropasture, and from agropasture to regenerat-ing vegetation. Results of this research indicated that increase in impervious surface area mainly resulted from the loss of cerrado in the initial decade of the study period and from loss of agricultural lands in the last two decades. Increase in agropasture was mainly at the expense of losing cerrado in the first two decades and relatively evenly from the loss of primary forest and cerrado in the last decade. When impervious surface area was less than approximately 40 km2 before 1999, impervious surface area was negatively related to cerrado and forest, and positively related to agropasture areas, but after impervious surface area reached 40 km2 in 1999, no obvious relationship exists between them. [Termes IGN] Uttarakhand (Inde ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) Uttarakhand state, located in northern India, has a total geographic area of 51,125km2. Ninety-three per cent of the state is mountainous whereas 64% is forested area, and the cities of the region has different living standards. The Quality of Life (QOL) is assessed in the state by using remote sensing-derived parameters along with the census data warehouse in geospatial environment. The study develops a methodology to measure the QOL in the state using geospatial techniques. The study addresses use of Landsat MSS satellite imagery to estimate environmental parameters like vegetation fraction, impervious surface fraction and land surface temperature. Census of India details were integrated along with remote sensing data-derived parameters in the GIS environment. Factor analysis was conducted to interpret the input parameters for the assessment of QOL index. In this process, three indices were generated (crowdedness, greenness and economic indices). These indices were further processed to estimate the overall QOL index of Uttarakhand. All types of spatial maps were published in the distributed environment using open source internet GIS technologies. [Termes IGN] Tamil Nadu (Inde ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) This article reveals an application of multi-spectral satellite data for analysing the dynamics of different coastal landform features along the southern coastal Tamil Nadu of India. An integrated approach comprising visual image interpretation and maximum-likelihood supervised classification has been employed to classify the coastal landforms by using IRS data (during the period 1999–2006). The quality of image classification has been assessed by performing the accuracy assessments with the existing thematic maps and finally the coastal landforms have been mapped. The study reveals that the dynamics of coastal landforms such as sandy beaches, mud-flats, sand dunes and salt marshes along the study area are mostly influenced by the coastal processes, sediment transport, geomorphology and anthropogenic activities. Major anthropogenic sources for the perturbation of beach sediment budgets and a cause of beach erosion along the study area are excessive sand mining, removal of sand dunes, coastal urbanization, tourism and developmental activities. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Since December 2008, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites has been operationally distributing a global 25-km surface soil moisture product derived from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) onboard the meteorological operational platform (METOP) satellite METOP-A. Soil moisture is retrieved by using the semiempirical change detection method originally developed by the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) for the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) flown on the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2. With the launch of the first of the three Meteorological Operational Platforms (METOP-A) in October 2006, ASCAT onboard METOP-A inherits and continues the role of his predecessor AMI. The original soil moisture retrieval algorithm (TU Wien model) was expected to be almost directly applicable for ASCAT with only minor changes, since the configuration and technical design is similar to the ERS scatterometers. Since the TU Wien model requires a robust historic long-term reference of scattering parameters, the initial near real-time METOP ASCAT soil moisture product had to rely on the model parameters derived from over 15 years of ERS-1/2. However, the combination of ASCAT backscatter measurements and ERS-1/2 historic long-term reference introduced some artifacts in the soil moisture product. The objectives of this paper were to analyze and investigate the impact of the ERS-1/2 historic long-term reference on the soil moisture retrieval. An error model has been developed to quantify the effects of the two main error sources: differences in spatial resolution and absolute calibration. The results of the study show that a simple model is able to describe the artifacts in the initial near real-time METOP ASCAT soil moisture product, which frequently occur in areas characterized by sharp backscatter contrasts. The expected overestimation of soil moisture using ERS-1/2 model parameters due to a calibration bias between AMI- and ASCAT could be modeled as well.
