A case study of high resolution lidar data acquired over a deciduous forest near Morgantown, WV was used to investigate the potential and limitations of current VR software for remote sensing analysis. The functionality within a standard remote sensing software package was found to provide a good overview of interpolated, smoothed lidar data, but was less useful for gridded data that had not been interpolated. With gridded data, it was possible to drape orthophotographs or other images over the lidar data, providing a useful method for investigating relationships between lidar and other data. Alternatively, using a commercial VR package, it was possible to view the original lidar point data, and thus visualize the multiple returns from within the canopy of each tree. The point data were preferable for identification of surfaces within the data cloud, especially the ground surface. For a fully integrated remote sensing VR package, functionality will be needed to link point and interpolated coverages, and also to enhance the interactive selection of data for further statistical analysis, Numéro de notice : A2003-100 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/10106040308542260 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/10106040308542260 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=22396

[Termes IGN] radianceRésumé : (Auteur) A very quick neural network algorithm for cloud detection, based on a neural network, is developed. Cloud detection is speeded up through the use of the Class Assigning Space (CAS). The CAS is a classified Radiance Space (RS), which has been built using the trained neural network. The GAS is used to assign a class for each pixel in the image instead of using the ANN to treat every single pixel. The detection time is approximately one second. Channel 1 and channel 5 of N0AA-AVHRR images have been used. The Supervised ARTII artificial neural network has been employed. The system performance has been tested with different training sets and different input data. The results show that the estimated accuracy of these water quality variables using a neural network is much higher than the accuracy using simple and multivariate regression approaches. The results also demonstrate that SAR is only a marginally helpful to improve the estimation of these three variables for the practical use in the study area. However, the method still needs to be refined in the area under study. [Termes IGN] sécheresseRésumé : (Auteur) The extend drought situation in the southeast of Buenos Aires during the second half of the year 2000 caused the government to invoke emergency laws. This action allowed farmers in the area to receive waivers for taxes and loans. The emergency laws remained in force during 2001, without further verification of environmental conditions for agriculture. Developing an assessment of the actual drought situation was relevant for taxing and national credit situations.
An assessment was preformed of the actual drought situaton of farms during the spring of 2001 in seven counties in Buenos Aires Province area. The assessment was done by comparing vegetation index values (NDVI) - as measured from NOAA-AVHRR satellite data - of September 2001 against NDVI time series values from previous years. Five categories were established to describe the relationship between the present index and the average of the time series. Farms within the area covered by the study were assigned to appropriate category using GIS tools. It was confirmed that most of the area had NDVI values that were similar to the average values, or even higher. It was found that there were subareas where the vegetation index had decreased. For those cases, LANDSAT TM images of the area of september and Octobr of 2001 were used for a detailed inspection. The study included rainfall data as well, confirming a normal regional situation. Both low and high resolution satellite images were found to be usefull tools for obtaining fast, economic, objective and conclusive results about the production capability of individual farms as well as the region as a whole. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) Recent high resolution satellite images provide a valuable new data source for geospatial information acquisition. This paper addresses building extraction from Ikonos images in urban areas. The proposed approach uses the classification results of Ikonos multispectral images to provide approximate location and shape for candidate building objects. Their fine extraction is then carried out in the corresponding panchromatic image through segmentation and squaring. The ECHO classifier is used for supervised classification while the ISODATA algorithm is used for unsupervised classification and subsequent image segmentation. The classification performance is evaluated using the classification confusion matrix, while the final building extraction results are assessed based on the manually delineated results. A building squaring approach based on the Hough transformation is developed that detects and forms the rectilinear building boundaries. A number of sample results are presented to illustrate the approach and demonstrate its efficiency. It is shown that about 64.4 percent of the buildings can be detected, extracted, and accurately formed through this process. Remaining difficulties are high percentage false alarm errors caused by the misclassification of road and building classes as well as occlusion and shadows that may mislead the extraction process.
