[Termes IGN] système d'information foncièreRésumé : (Auteur) The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite provides retrievals of soil moisture in roughly the upper 5 cm with a 30-50-km resolution and a mission accuracy requirement of 0.04 cm3/cm-3. These observations can be used to improve land surface model (LSM) soil moisture states through data assimilation (DA). In this paper, SMOS soil moisture retrievals are assimilated into the Noah LSM via an Ensemble Kalman Filter within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Land Information System. Bias correction is implemented using cumulative distribution function (cdf) matching, with points aggregated by either land cover or soil type to reduce the sampling error in generating the cdfs. An experiment was run for the warm season of 2011 to test SMOS DA and to compare assimilation methods. Verification of soil moisture analyses in the 0-10-cm upper layer and the 0-1-m root zone was conducted using in situ measurements from several observing networks in central and southeastern United States. This experiment showed that SMOS DA significantly increased the anomaly correlation of Noah soil moisture with station measurements from 0.45 to 0.57 in the 0-10-cm layer. Time series at specific stations demonstrates the ability of SMOS DA to increase the dynamic range of soil moisture in a manner consistent with station measurements. Among the bias correction methods, the correction based on soil type performed best at bias reduction but also reduced correlations. The vegetation-based correction did not produce any significant differences compared with using a simple uniform correction curve. [Termes IGN] image ZiYuan-3Résumé : (Auteur) Owing to the large biases of laboratory-calibrated imaging parameters, the initial direct georeferencing accuracy of Ziyuan-3 (zy-3) three-line camera (tlc) images can only reach the kilometer level. In this paper, a line-based geometric calibration model is established by using the line-coplanarity constraint, and a feasible geometric calibration approach for the zy-3 tlcs using ground control lines (gcls) is presented. Experimental results show that the calibration accuracy achieved by using gcls reached about 1.0 pixel, which was almost the same as that achieved by using ground control points (gcps). After substituting gcls for gcps in the geometric calibration, the georeferencing accuracy of the zy-3 tlc images without ground controls was significantly improved from the kilometer level to better than 11 m in planimetry and 8 m in height. A better georeferencing accuracy of about 3.0 m in planimetry and 2.5 m in height was achieved after the block adjustment with four gcps. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) Moderate-resolution sensors, including AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer), MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and VIIRS (Visible-Infrared Imager-Radiometer Suite), have provided over forty years of global scientific data. In the form of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), these data greatly benefit environmental studies. However, their usefulness is compromised by sensor differences. This study investigates the global NDVI difference and its spatio-temporal patterns among typical moderate-resolution sensors, as supported by state-of-the-art remote sensing derived products. Our study demonstrates that the atmosphere plays a secondary role to LULC (Land Use/Land Cover) in inter-sensor NDVI differences. With reference to AVHRR/3, AVHRR/1 and 2 exhibit negative NDVI biases for vegetated land cover types. In summer (July), the area of negative bias shifts northward, and the magnitude increases in the Northern Hemisphere. For most LULC types, the bias generally shifts in the negative direction from winter (January) to summer. A linear regression of the NDVI difference versus NDVI shows a close correlation between the slope value and vegetation phenology. Overall, NDVI differences are controlled by LULC type and vegetation phenology. Our study can be used to generate a long-term, consistent NDVI data set from composite MODIS and AVHRR NDVI data. LULC-dependent and temporally variable correction equations are recommended to reduce inter-sensor NDVI differences. [Termes IGN] TromsRésumé : (auteur) Avalanches are a natural hazard that occur in mountainous regions of Troms County in northern Norway during winter and can cause loss of human life and damage to infrastructure. Knowledge of when and where they occur especially in remote, high mountain areas is often lacking due to difficult access. However, complete, spatiotemporal avalanche activity data sets are important for accurate avalanche forecasting, as well as for deeper understanding of the link between avalanche occurrences and the triggering snowpack and meteorological factors. It is therefore desirable to develop a technique that enables active mapping and monitoring of avalanches over an entire winter. Avalanche debris can be observed remotely over large spatial areas, under all weather and light conditions by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. The recently launched Sentinel-1A satellite acquires SAR images covering the entire Troms County with frequent updates. By focusing on a case study from New Year 2015 we use Sentinel-1A images to develop an automated avalanche debris detection algorithm that utilizes change detection and unsupervised object classification methods. We compare our results with manually identified avalanche debris and field-based images to quantify the algorithm accuracy. Our results indicate that a correct detection rate of over 60% can be achieved, which is sensitive to several algorithm parameters that may need revising. With further development and refinement of the algorithm, we believe that this method could play an effective role in future operational monitoring of avalanches within Troms and has potential application in avalanche forecasting areas worldwide. [Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a method based on combining wave tracing and linear wave theory for the estimation of wave period and bathymetry in coastal areas from satellite images. The method depends on several parameters for which we provide ranges of variations adapted to the instrument. Experimental results are conducted on several sites located around the Hawaiian island of Oahu, using 13 Landsat-8 images. Results show that wave period estimations are compatible with the wave buoy measurements in all cases. In addition, bathymetry estimation results show a standard deviation of less than 15% of the observed depth out of the surf zone until 20 m for sites with a direct exposure to the swell and with an absence of clouds. The proposed method, which does not rely on ancillary data, represents a promising tool for bathymetry estimation using satellite images in which waves are present.
