[Termes IGN] surveillanceRésumé : (éditeur) A country's local spatial development can be derived from socio-economic indicators assigned to administrative units. Proper management and monitoring often require statistics at a more detailed level. However, it is difficult if not impossible to sub-aggregate the statistics to smaller areas than administrative units. A reliable alternative is to measure the intensity and extent of night-time illumination and the changes over time. The authors have developed two indicators derived from satellite night-time images for monitoring local spatial developments in the Czech Republic. [Termes IGN] simulation numériqueRésumé : (auteur) Understanding trends in forest canopy cover at local, national, and global scales is important for many applications, including policymaking related to forest carbon sequestration. Globally consistent land-cover data sets derived from MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are now available for a period of more than 10 years, long enough to detect trends both in deforestation and in afforestation. However, methods of modelling land-cover change normally require specialized software and expertise, limiting the availability of this information. This barrier to access can be eliminated through the use of web services that construct models on demand based on user-specified regions of interest, so that parameters are inferred from, and relevant to, local conditions. In this paper we present a proof-of-concept system for building and running spatial Markov chain models of forest-cover change on demand, and demonstrate how the on-demand approach may be implemented for similar applications. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate mapping of long-term global soil moisture is of great importance to earth science studies and a variety of applications. An approach for deriving volumetric soil moisture using satellite passive microwave radiometry from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) was developed in this study. Unlike the major AMSR-E retrieval algorithms that assume fixed scattering albedo values over the globe, the proposed algorithm adopts a weighted averaging strategy for soil moisture estimation based on a dynamic selection of albedo values that are empirically determined. The resulting soil moisture retrievals demonstrate more realistic global patterns and seasonal dynamics relative to the baseline University of Montana soil moisture product. Quantitative analysis of the new approach against in situ soil moisture measurements over four study regions also indicates improvements over the baseline algorithm, with coefficients of determination (R2) between the retrievals and in situ measurements increasing by approximately 16.9% and 41.5% and bias-corrected root-mean-square errors decreasing by about 25.0% and 38.2% for ascending and descending orbital data records, respectively. The resulting algorithm is readily applied to similar microwave sensors, including the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2, and its retrieval strategy is also applicable to other passive microwave sensors, including lower frequency (L-band) observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Soil Moisture Active Passive mission. This approach takes into consideration only characteristic pixels, not all pixels of the image, to represent and characterize textural features. Due to the fact that increasing the spatial resolution of satellite sensors leads to the lack of stationarity hypothesis in the acquired images, such an approach becomes relevant since only the interaction and characteristics of keypoints are exploited. Moreover, as this technique does not need to consider all pixels inside the image like classical dense approaches, it is more capable to deal with large-size image data offered by VHR remote sensing acquisition systems. In this work, our pointwise strategy is performed by exploiting the local maximum and local minimum pixels (in terms of intensity) extracted from the image. It is integrated into several texture analysis frameworks with the help of different techniques and methods such as the graph theory, the covariance-based approach, the geometric distance measurement, etc. As a result, a variety of texture-based applications using remote sensing data (both VHR optical and radar images) are tackled such as image retrieval, segmentation, classification, and change detection, etc. By performing dedicated experiments to each thematic application, the effectiveness and relevance of the proposed approach are confirmed and validated.
