[Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (auteur) A model function of seawater, which specifies the dielectric constant of seawater as a function of salinity, temperature, and frequency, is important for the retrieval of sea surface salinity using satellite data. In 2017, a model function has been developed based on measurement data at 1.4134 GHz using a third-order polynomial expression in salinity ( S ) and temperature ( T ). Although the model showed improvements in salinity retrieval, it had an inconsistent behavior between partitioned salinities. To improve the stability of the model, new dielectric measurements of seawater have been made recently over a broad range of salinities and temperatures to expand the data set used for developing the model function. The structure of the model function has been changed from a polynomial expansion in S and T to a physics-based model consisting of a Debye molecular resonance term plus a conductivity term. Each unknown parameter is expressed in S and T based on the expanded measurement data set. Physical arguments have been used to limit the number of unknown coefficients in these expressions to improve the stability of the model function. The new model function has been employed in the retrieval algorithm of the Aquarius satellite mission to obtain a global salinity map. The retrieved salinity using a different model function is compared with in situ data collected by Argo floats to evaluate the impact and the performance of model functions. The results indicate that the new model function has significant improvements in salinity retrieval compared with other existing models. The SCC method provides a low-cost and feasible solution to convert high-resolution UAS images in digital numbers (DN) to reflectance when satellite data is available. The proposed method is evaluated using a multispectral data set, including orthorectified KHawk UAS DN imagery and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager Level-2 surface reflectance (SR) data over a forest/grassland area. The estimated UAS reflectance images are compared with the National Ecological Observatory Network's imaging spectrometer (NIS) SR data for validation. The UAS reflectance showed high similarities with the NIS data for the near-infrared and red bands with Pearson's r values being 97 and 95.74, and root-mean-square errors being 0.0239 and 0.0096 over a 32-subplot hayfield. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Dense time series of optical satellite imagery describing vegetation activity provide essential information for the efficient and regular monitoring of vegetation. Nevertheless, the temporal resolution of optical sensors is strongly affected by cloud cover, resulting in significant missing information. The use of complementary acquisitions, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, opens the door to the development of new multi-sensor methodologies aiming at the reconstruction of missing information. However, the joint exploitation of new radar and optical missions, such as the Sentinel, raises new challenges given the different nature and response of the two data sources. In this work, the SenRVM methodology is proposed as a new multi-sensor approach to regress SAR time series towards Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). A deep Recurrent Neural Network architecture which integrates SAR acquisitions and ancillary data is adopted. The regression task permits a continuous optical temporal resolution of 6 days. Multiple experiments are carried out to assess the SenRVM framework by studying two large-scale areas in France. Through an extensive interpretation of the results, SenRVM is evaluated on three main vegetation types (grasslands, crops, and forests). [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Buildings can be introduced as a fundamental element for forming a city. Therefore, up-to-date building maps have become vital for many applications, including urban mapping and urban expansion analysis. With the development of deep learning, segmenting building footprints from high-resolution remote sensing imagery has become a subject of intense study. Here, a modified version of the U-Net architecture with a combination of pre- and post-processing techniques was developed to extract building footprints from high-resolution aerial imagery and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. Data pre-processing with the logarithmic correction image enhancing algorithm showed the most significant improvement in the building detection accuracy for aerial images; meanwhile, the CLAHE algorithm improved the most concerning UAV images. This study developed a post-processing technique using polygonizing and polygon smoothing called the Douglas–Peucker algorithm, which made the building output directly ready to use for different applications. The attribute information, land use data, and population count data were applied using two open datasets. In addition, the building area and perimeter of each building were calculated as geometric attributes. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Urban trees are valuable in, inter alia, ameliorating air pollution and mitigating the effects associated with urban heat islands. The dearth of tree cover maps is a major challenge for urban planners in the management of urban trees. This work adopts remote sensing approaches to provide urban tree cover maps which can strengthen urban landscape management. Whereas traditional pixel-based classification approaches have been commonly used in image classification, they are not well-suited for urban tree mapping due to their failure to fully explore the image’s spatial and spectral characteristics. Object-based classification techniques produce improved accuracies using additional variables. This study depicts the capability of object-based image analysis (OBIA) in mapping common urban trees using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery. The study tests the utility of WV-2 bands and other feature variables in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. Furthermore, the study compares the utility of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The results show that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), NIR 1 and NIR 2 bands were important in the classification of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The RF classifier performed better than SVM, with an overall accuracy of 91.9% as compared to 87.3% for SVM. The results of this study offer insight to urban authorities with knowledge on the segmentation parameters, classification methods and feature variables for mapping urban trees, valuable in urban tree management.
