[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) This study presents a method to generate historical orthomosaics using Structure-from-Motion (SfM ) photogrammetry, historical aerial photographs, and lidar data, and then analyzes the horizontal accuracy and factors that can affect the quality of historical orthoimagery products made with these approaches. Two sets of historical aerial photographs (1934 and 1951) were analyzed, focused on the town of Woodstock in Connecticut, U.S.A. Ground control points (GCPs) for georeferencing were obtained by overlaying multiple data sets, including lidar elevation data and derivative hillshades, and recent orthoimagery. Root-Mean-Square Error values of check points (CPs ) for 1934 and 1951 orthomosaics without extreme outliers are 0.83 m and 1.37 m, respectively. Results indicate that orthomosaics can be used for standard mapping and geographic information systems (GIS ) work according to the ASPRS 1990 accuracy standard. In addition, results emphasize that three main factors can affect the horizontal accuracy of orthomosaics: (1) types of CPs, (2) the number of tied photos, and (3) terrain. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The coastal zone, a highly dynamic and complex environment, has important ecological and jurisdictional implications for governments and coastal managers. Based on the CORINE Land Cover classification system, this paper examined the effects of land use and land cover change (LULC) on the coastlines' dynamics along the ∼24 km barrier island of Nador lagoon on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco during a period of 62 years (1954–2016). The study utilized high-resolution orthoimages in the geographic information system (GIS) environment to characterize coastline evolution and LULC changes. The evolution of the coastline was assessed using a GIS tool, in particular the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). The net rates of coastline change were calculated by using statistical methods: the End Point Rate (EPR) and the Linear Regression Rate (LRR). Results concerning the LULC changes showed that agricultural area and beach/dune classes decreased over the entire study period (62 years) by 11.14% and 28.45%, respectively. Urban fabric, shrub, forest, and saltmarsh/peat bog classes increased during the 62 years of evaluation by 2.69%, 19.92%, 16.77%, and 0.19%, respectively. Results regarding coastal analysis indicated that the accretion and erosion processes along the barrier island of the Nador lagoon (∼24km) were observed at 45% (10.6 km) and 55% (12.8 km) of the coastline, respectively. The beaches of Oulad Zehra and Oulad Aissa were characterized by erosion (−0.58 m/yr to −0.57 m/yr respectively), while accretion was observed on the beaches of Boukana and Kariat Arkmane at rates of +2.15 m/yr and +0.82 m/yr, respectively. This study highlighted that natural and anthropogenic processes have a strong influence on the erosion/accretion trends identified along the barrier island of Nador lagoon. The changes in LULC have affected the barrier island of the lagoon in two different forms: (1) a significant spatial conversion due to dune reforestation and (2) a fundamental spatial modification that affects the sea-lagoon connection (inlet) and the construction of new hard engineering structures. Aerial photos, especially historical aerial photos, provide significant amount of valuable information for many applications and fields. However, due to limited funding support, most historical aerial photos have not been digitized and georeferenced yet, which substantially limits their utility for today’s computer-based image processing and analysis. Traditionally, historical aerial photos are georeferenced with desktop GIS software applications. However, this method is expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. To address these limitations, this research developed a custom-built online georeferencing tool to enable georeferencing digitized historical aerial photos in a web environment, which is able to georeference historical aerial photos in a rapid and cost-effective manner. To evaluate the georeferencing performance, a set of 50 historical aerial photos were georeferenced with not only the developed online georeferencing tool but also two commercial desktop software programs. Research results revealed the custom-built online georeferencing tool provided the highest degree of accuracy while maximizing its accessibility. Unfortunately, the amount of effort required to label the data has significantly hindered the application of deep learning methods, especially in 3D modelling tasks requiring heterogeneous samples. This paper proposes a semi-supervised adversarial recognition strategy embedded in the inverse procedural modelling engine to reduce data annotation costs for learning to model 3D façades. Beginning with textured level-of-details models, we use convolutional neural networks to recognise the types and estimate the parameters of windows from image patches. The window types and parameters are then assembled into the procedural grammar. A simple procedural engine is built inside off-the-shelf 3D modelling software, producing fine-grained window geometries. To obtain a useful model from a few labelled samples, we leverage a generative adversarial network to train the feature extractor in a semi-supervised manner. The adversarial training strategy exploits the unlabelled data to stabilise the training phase. Experiments using publicly available façade image datasets reveal that the proposed methods can improve classification accuracy and parameter estimation by approximately 10% and 50%, respectively, under the same network structure. In addition, performance gains are more pronounced when testing against unseen data featuring different façade styles. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (auteur) Mapping the expansion or reduction of rice fields is fundamental for food and water security, greenhouse gas emission accounting, and environmental management. The historical mapping of rice fields with satellite images is challenging because of the limited availability of remote sensing and training data from past decades. The use of phenology-based algorithms has been proposed for mapping rice fields because they can take advantage of rice fields’ characteristic spectral signature during the transplanting phase and do not need training data. However, in order to employ phenology-based algorithms effectively for the historical rice mapping of large areas, we need to incorporate automatized methods able to deal with non-usable data (e.g., cloud cover) and with spatial inconsistencies in the number of available images for each pixel. Here we propose the combination of a pixel-based, phenological algorithm with the temporal aggregation of all available Landsat images to produce national level historical maps of rice fields in Japan from the 1980s onwards. We used temporally aggregated metrics (median, percentiles, etc.), derived from spectral indices of a large number of images within the Google Earth Engine, to minimize the issue of inconsistent image availability and reduce the effects of outliers in phenology-based algorithms. We produced seven rice field maps, for the periods 1985–89, 1990–94, 1995–99, 2000–04, 2005–09, 2010–14, and 2015–19. The overall map accuracies ranged from 83% to 95% when validated with visually interpreted aerial photography. We detected a 23% decrease in the area of rice fields at a country level, although the changes varied greatly among prefectures. Here we present the first freely available historical rice field maps of Japan from the 1980s onwards, together with the source code, and a web application that enables the exploration of the maps and data relating to the derived rice field area changes. The application of temporal aggregation is promising for dealing with the gap-filling of large amounts of satellite data, reducing the issue of data outliers and providing an effective use of the historical Landsat archive for phenology-based crop detection algorithms. Our maps could greatly help researchers, conservationists and policymakers studying the drivers and consequences of rice field changes, and our methods could be extrapolated to map rice fields at large scales in other regions of the world.
