[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Change detection is one of the most addressed topics in the remote sensing community. When performed on synthetic aperture radar images, the most critical issues are as follows: 1) the labeling of the identified changing patterns and 2) the scarce robustness of classic pixel-based approaches based on threshold segmentation of an appropriate change index, which tend to fail when multiple changes are present in the study area. In this work, a new methodology for unsupervised change detection in vegetation canopy is presented. It overcomes these limitations by exploiting multitemporal geographical object-based image analysis with the aim to make the intrinsic semantic of data emerge and direct the processing toward the identification of precise classes of changes through dictionary-based preclassification and fuzzy combination of class-specific information layers. The proposed methodology has been tested in ten different experiments covering agriculture and clear-cut deforestation applications. The results, validated against literature methods, highlighted the superiority of the proposed approach, which was quantitatively assessed in terms of standard classification quality parameters. On agriculture experiments, it allowed for an average increase in the detection accuracy of about 11% with respect to the best performing literature method, with an increment of the false alarm rate in the order of 0.5%. In case of deforestation, the registered detection accuracy was comparable to that achieved by the literature, while the most significant benefit was the reduction, of more than one-third, of the number of detected false deforestation patterns. Overall, the main characteristics of the proposed architecture are the robustness and the lack of any supervision, which makes it very well-suited for operational scenarios. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) Forest height is an essential input parameter for forest biomass estimation, ecological modeling, and the carbon cycle. Tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR), as a three-dimensional imaging technique, has already been successfully used in forest areas to retrieve the forest height. The nonparametric iterative adaptive approach (IAA) has been recently introduced in TomoSAR, achieving a good compromise between high resolution and computing efficiency. However, the performance of the IAA algorithm is significantly degraded in the case of a small tomographic aperture. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes the robust IAA (RIAA) algorithm for SAR tomography. The proposed approach follows the framework of the IAA algorithm, but also considers the noise term in the covariance matrix estimation. By doing so, the condition number of the covariance matrix can be prevented from being too large, improving the robustness of the forest height estimation with the IAA algorithm. A set of simulated experiments was carried out, and the results validated the superiority of the RIAA estimator in the case of a small tomographic aperture. Moreover, a number of fully polarimetric L-band airborne tomographic SAR images acquired from the ESA BioSAR 2008 campaign over the Krycklan Catchment, Northern Sweden, were collected for test purposes. The results showed that the RIAA algorithm performed better in reconstructing the vertical structure of the forest than the IAA algorithm in areas with a small tomographic aperture. Finally, the forest height was estimated by both the RIAA and IAA TomoSAR methods, and the estimation accuracy of the RIAA algorithm was 2.01 m, which is more accurate than the IAA algorithm with 3.25 m. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) One of the fundamental technical challenges of any new spaceborne vegetation remote sensing mission is the determination of what sensor(s) to place onboard and what, if any, overlapping modes of operation they will employ as each onboard sensor adds significant cost to the overall mission. In this article, the remote sensing of forest parameters using multimodal remote sensing is presented. In particular, polarimetric radar, Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR), and near-IR passive optical sensing platforms are employed in conjunction with physics-based models. These models are used to accurately estimate forest aboveground biomass as well as canopy height in homogeneous areas. It is shown that this proposed method is capable of achieving high accuracy estimates while using minimal ancillary data in the estimation process. We present a method to combine measured data sets with our geometric and electromagnetic sensor models to develop a forest parameter estimation algorithm that fuses multimodal remote sensing technologies with a minimal amount of ground information and yields an accurate estimate of forest structure including dry biomass and canopy height with rms errors of 1.6 kg/m 2 and 1.68 m respectively. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) The detection of small ships in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images is still a topic for further investigation. Recently, patch detection techniques, such as superpixel-level detection, have stimulated wide interest because they can use the information contained in similarities among neighboring pixels. In this article, we propose a novel neighborhood polarimetric covariance matrix (NPCM) to detect the small ships in PolSAR images, leading to a significant improvement in the separability between ship targets and sea clutter. The NPCM utilizes the spatial correlation between neighborhood pixels and maps the representation for a given pixel into a high-dimensional covariance matrix by embedding spatial and polarization information. Using the NPCM formalism, we apply a standard whitening filter, similar to the polarimetric whitening filter (PWF). We show how the inclusion of neighborhood information improves the performance compared with the traditional polarimetric covariance matrix. However, this is at the expense of a higher computation cost. The theory is validated via the simulated and measured data under different sea states and using different radar platforms. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) A recent development in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology is integrating multiple SAR satellite data to dynamically extract ground features. This paper addresses two relevant challenges: identification of common ground targets from different SAR datasets in space, and concatenation of time series when dealing with temporal dynamics. To address the first challenge, we describe the geolocation uncertainty of InSAR measurements as a three-dimensional error ellipsoid. The points, among InSAR measurements, which have error ellipsoids with a positive cross volume are identified as tie-point pairs representing common ground objects from multiple SAR datasets. The cross volumes are calculated using Monte Carlo methods and serve as weights to achieve the equivalent deformation time series. To address the second challenge, the deformation time series model for each tie-point pair is estimated using probabilistic methods, where potential deformation models are efficiently tested and evaluated. As an application, we integrated two Radarsat-2 datasets in Standard and Extra-Fine modes to map the subsidence of the west of the Netherlands between 2010 and 2017. We identified 18128 tie-point pairs, 5 intersection types of error ellipsoids, 5 deformation models, and constructed their long-term deformation time series. The detected maximum mean subsidence velocity in Line-Of-Sight direction is up to 15 . We conclude that our method removes limitations that exist in single-viewing-geometry SAR when integrating multiple SAR data. In particular, the proposed time-series modeling method is useful to achieve a long-term deformation time series of multiple datasets.
