Tapping on a range of techniques provided in the Erdas Imagine environment, the procedures laid out in this paper go a step further than normal software guidelines by providing improvised techniques that are graphically illustrated by reference to a study area (the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana) covering about 65000km to allow the reader to assimilate the sequence of steps involved. With self evident usable results in the form of a 2m-resolution seamless mosaic providing blanket coverage for the above stated area on 15 September 1967, it is apparent that similar initiatives elsewhere can take advantage of our proposed methodology in putting together what is retrievable from the archives by building databases that extend time horizons into the historical past for use in long-term environmental monitoring. After positive results obtained during an experimental test executed in Bologna (Italy) on March 2005, the INGV (Bologna, Italy) and CODEVINTEC srl (Milan, Italy) planned a mission over the Mount Vesuvius volcano (Naples, Italy). For the first time, a wide crater area composed of low reflectivity materials was completely surveyed, creating a very accurate digital surface model. In this work, a long-range laser scanner was used to create high-precision surveys that demonstrated very low residual values in scan comparisons. The results lead to the conclusion that this methodology is suitable for surface monitoring proposals. [Termes IGN] Mercantour, massif duRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a change detection analysis based on a region growing segmentation approach which combines both spectral and spatial information. The test site is a French Alpine protected area, which like many other mountain areas is characterised by a general increase of forest and woody vegetation due to the abandonment of traditional land use practices. Two Landsat images of the years 1984 and 2000 were used and a classification scheme nomenclature based on four vegetation change classes, implying a gradual modification of land cover, was adopted. The accuracy of the change map was assessed both during two visits on the field and using a bi-temporal aerial photographic coverage. A sampling scheme specifically conceived for change detection products was adopted. Error matrices and accuracy indices to assess commission and omission errors of the change maps were generated.
The proposed change detection methodology circumvents limitations which are intrinsic to traditional classification procedures based only on spectral information. On the basis of the accuracy assessment, overall accuracy was 90.1% and the increase of woody vegetation turned out to be the vegetation change class better estimated, with user and producer accuracies of, respectively, 62.3% and 70%. However, confusion between the no change and the other vegetation change classes was noticed, due to standard problems encountered in change studies. Advantages and drawbacks of the use of multitemporal aerial photographs as the validation data set are also discussed.Numéro de notice : A2007-649 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/01431160600851785 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/01431160600851785 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=73801

Irrigation demands from a reservoir, which are generally computed by using the design cropping pattern and average rainfall conditions, may vary over the years depending on the actual cropping pattern and meteorological conditions. This study demonstrates the utility of remote sensing inputs and geographic information system (GIS) environment for determining realistic irrigation demands from a reservoir. Remote sensing data are used to map the actual cropping pattern in the command area while the GIS is used for integrating the field-level irrigation demands up to the canal system head. Ten daily irrigation demands in the command area of Samrat Ashok Sagar Reservoir in Madhya Pradesh, India, have been estimated and the reservoir operation policy has been derived. Through the simulation analysis with 29 years of inflow data, rule curves have been derived for the operation of reservoir so that water deficit (if any) can be distributed in time much in advance and severe crop failure can be avoided. Inferences drawn from the analysis can guide the system operator in using the available water in a scientific and judicious manner.
