[Termes IGN] polygone de ThiessenRésumé : (Auteur) Sampling satellite images presents some specific characteristics : images overlap and many of them fall partially outside the studied region. A careless sampling may introduce an important bias. This paper illustrates the risk of bias and the efficiency improvements of systematic, pps (probability proportional to size) and stratified sampling. A sampling method is proposed with the following criteria: (a) unbiased estimators are easy to compute; (b) it can be combined with stratification; (c) within each stratum, sampling probability is proportional to the area of the sampling unit; and (d) the geographic distribution of the sample is reasonably homogeneous. Thiessen polygons computed on image centres are sampled through a systematic grid of points. The sampling rates in different strata are tuned by dividing the systematic grid into subgrids or replicates and taking for each stratum a certain number of replicates. The approach is illustrated with an application to the estimation of the geometric accuracy of Image2000, a Landsat ETM+ mosaic of the European Union. [Termes IGN] méthode de Monte-CarloRésumé : (Auteur) The number of training samples per class (n) required for accurate Maximum Likelihood (ML) classification is known to be affected by the number of bands (p) in the input image. However, the general rule which defines that n should be 10p to 30p is often enforced universally in remote sensing without questioning its relevance to the complexity of the specific discrimination problem. Furthermore, identifying this many training samples is often problematic when many classes and/or many bands are used. It is important, then, to test how this generally accepted rule matches common remote sensing discrimination problems because it could be unnecessarily restrictive for many applications. This study was primarily conducted in order to test whether the general rule defining the relationship between n and p was well-suited for ML classification of a relatively simple remote sensing-based discrimination problem. To summarise the mean response of n-to-p for our study site, a Monte Carlo procedure was used to randomly stack various numbers of bands into thousands of separate image combinations that were then classified using an ML algorithm. The bands were randomly selected from a 119-band Enhanced Thematic Mapper-plus (ETM+) dataset comprised of 17 images acquired during the 2001-2002 southern hemisphere summer agricultural growing season over an irrigation area in south-eastern Australia. Results showed that the number of training samples needed for accurate ML classification was much lower than the current widely accepted rule. Due to the asymptotic nature of the relationship, we found that 95% of the accuracy attained using n = 30p samples could be achieved by using approximately 2p to 4p samples, or Numéro de notice : A2005-434 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2005.08.011 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27570

[Termes IGN] transformation de BroveyRésumé : (Auteur) The Tertiary Sivas Basin contains widespread, tectonically deformed deposits of massive Oligocene gypsum. This unit is one of the most important factors controlling the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the basin insofar as these deposits are interpreted as décollement levels. As a considerable fold and thrust belt, the Sivas Basin also has a remarkable structural expression within these evaporite deposits, as seen in satellite images aided by colour composites. Because of the and climatic conditions of the region, the basin provides ease of interpretation geologically in terms of the synoptic-view capability of broad-band multispectral data sets, such as ASTER and Landsat ETM+. In this study, various processing methods-such as data fusion and decorrelation stretching-were applied to highlight Oligocene gypsum deposits of the basin. [Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) The Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite acquired a sequence of data in 2001 and 2002 that highlighted the annual flooding of the lower Okavango Delta. The data were collected as part of the calibration/validation programme for the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) sensor on the NASA EO-1 satellite. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the capability of ALI to that of Landsat ETM + for large-scale mapping applications in the Okavango Delta. While the extent and inaccessibility of many areas of the Delta make application of remote sensing attractive, the availability of data with adequate spatial and spectral resolution has limited the characterization of the complex patterns of land cover and geomorphology in the Delta. Initial analysis of the ALI data via supervised classification clearly showed macro-flood features, delineation of downstream channel flow areas, and lateral-downstream inundation of the floodplain. These patterns and the proportions of flooding of the channel compared to that of the floodplain (impoundment) varied annually, from the wetter seasonal swamps through the drier seasonal and occasional swamps. Consistently higher classification accuracies achieved using ALI data relative to ETM + data are attributed to the higher signal-to-noise ratio and the increased dynamic range of the ALI data.
