However, in some cases it is not possible to achieve the desired information over large areas, for example from historical data where the quality and amount of available images is definitely lower than from modern data. The use of automated and semi automated methods offers the means to identify the vegetation cover using remotely sensed data. In this paper automated methods were tested on aerial photographs and satellite images to extract better and more reliable information about vegetation cover. These testswere performed by using automated analysis of LANDSAT7 images (with and without the surface model of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)) and two temporally similar aerial photographs. The spectral bands were analyzed with supervised (maximum likelihood) methods. In conclusion, the SRTM and the combination of two temporally similar aerial photographs from earlier years were useful in separating the vegetation cover on a floodplain area. In addition the different date of the vegetation season also gave reliable information about the land cover. High quality information about old and present vegetation on a large area is an essential prerequisites ensuring the conservation of ecosystems. The performances of the Landsat time-series have been already demonstrated for mapping and monitoring the annual clear-cuts and the storm damage in the Landes Forest, that covers ~1 million ha in southwestern France and that is heavily managed with even-aged stands with rather short rotations after clear-cut harvesting. Our objectives aimed at improving, automating, and enriching these previous methods. This was to operationally produce over the whole Landes Forest not only (1) the annual maps of clear-cutting from 1984 up the current year but also (2) the map of the current age that was derived from the forest change detected every year since 1984. The developed methodology used the time-series of surface reflectance and cloud mask provided for Landsat by USGS and sought to cope the possible absence of cloud-free image during the interest season or the numerous missing data in Landsat 7 images after 2002. The retrospective processing of the Landsat time-series from 1984 to 2014 made it possible the prediction of actual current age with a satisfactory accuracy. As one of the most rapidly urbanized cities in Canada, Saskatoon (SK) was selected as our study area. Surface brightness retrieving, Pearson correlation, linear regression modeling, and buffer analysis were applied to different satellite datasets. The results indicate that both Landsat and MODIS data can yield pronounced estimations of daily air temperature with a significantly adjusted R2 of 0.803 and 0.518 at the spatial scales of 120m and 1000 m, respectively. MODIS monthly LST data is highly suitable for monitoring the trend of monthly urban air temperature throughout summer (June, July, and August) due to a high average R2 of 0.8 (P Numéro de notice : A2015-436 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.1515/geo-2015-0005 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1515/geo-2015-0005 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=77036

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Over the past decades it has been shown that remotely sensed auxiliary data have a potential to increase the precision of key estimators in sample-based forest surveys. This thesis was motivated by the increasing availability of remotely sensed data, and the objectives were to investigate how this type of auxiliary data can be used for improving both the design and the estimators in sample-based surveys. Two different modes of inference were studied: model-based inference and design-based inference. Empirical data for the studies were acquired from a boreal forest area in the Kuortane region of western Finland. The data comprised a combination of auxiliary information derived from airborne LiDAR and Landsat data, and field sample plot data collected using a modification of the 10th Finnish National Forest Inventory. The studied forest attribute was growing stock volume.
The results of this thesis are important for the development of forest inventories to meet the requirements which stem from an increasing number of international commitments and agreements related to forests.Numéro de notice : 14978 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Thèse étrangère Note de thèse : PhD : Forest sciences : University of Helsinki : 2015 En ligne : Over the past decades it has been shown that remotely sensed auxiliary data have [...] Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=78366 Remote sensing of forest degradation in Southeast Asia—Aiming for a regional view through 5–30 m satellite data / Jukka Miettinen in Global ecology and conservation, vol 2 (December 2014)

[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In this review paper, we present geographical, ecological and historical aspects of Southeast Asia from the perspective of forest degradation monitoring and critically discuss available approaches for large area forest degradation monitoring with satellite remote sensing data at high to medium spatial resolution (5–30 m). Several authors have achieved promising results in geographically limited areas within Southeast Asia using automated detection algorithms. However, the application of automated methods to large area assessments remains a major challenge. To-date, nearly all large area assessments of forest degradation in the region have included a strong visual interpretation component. We conclude that due to the variety of forest types and forest disturbance levels, as well as the variable image acquisition conditions in Southeast Asia, it is unlikely that forest degradation monitoring can be conducted throughout the region using a single automated approach with currently available remote sensing data. The provision of regionally consistent information on forest degradation from satellite remote sensing data remains therefore challenging. However, the expected increase in observation frequency in the near future (due to Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellites) may lead to the desired improvement in data availability and enable consistent and robust regional forest degradation monitoring in Southeast Asia.
