Mobile laser scanning (MLS) is the most appropriate data acquisition system for the road environment because of its efficient vehicle-based on-road scanning opportunity. Many methods are available for road pavement, curb and roadside way extraction. Most of them use classical approaches that do not mitigate problems caused by the presence of noise and outliers. In practice, however, laser scanning point clouds are not free from noise and outliers, and it is apparent that the presence of a very small portion of outliers and noise can produce unreliable and non-robust results. A road surface usually consists of three key parts: road pavement, curb and roadside way. This paper investigates the problem of road surface extraction in the presence of noise and outliers, and proposes a robust algorithm for road pavement, curb, road divider/islands, and roadside way extraction using MLS point clouds. The proposed algorithm employs robust statistical approaches to remove the consequences of the presence of noise and outliers. It consists of five sequential steps for road ground and non-ground surface separation, and road related components determination. Demonstration on two different MLS data sets shows that the new algorithm is efficient for road surface extraction and for classifying road pavement, curb, road divider/island and roadside way. The success can be rated in one experiment in this paper, where we extract curb points; the results achieve 97.28%, 100% and 0.986 of precision, recall and Matthews correlation coefficient, respectively. We construct a new family of generalized composite kernels which exhibit great flexibility when combining the spectral and the spatial information contained in the hyperspectral data, without any weight parameters. The classifier adopted in this work is the multinomial logistic regression, and the spatial information is modeled from extended multiattribute profiles. In order to illustrate the good performance of the proposed framework, support vector machines are also used for evaluation purposes. Our experimental results with real hyperspectral images collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer and the Reflective Optics Spectrographic Imaging System indicate that the proposed framework leads to state-of-the-art classification performance in complex analysis scenarios. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) A canopy height model (chm) derived from lidar data can be segmented to obtain individual tree crowns. However, branches, tree crowns, and tree clusters usually have similar shapes and overlapping sizes. This causes current individual tree crown delineation methods for CHMs to work less effectively on closed canopy deciduous or mixed wood forests consisting of various-sized tree crowns. Based on mult-scale analysis and segmentation, an innovative tree crown delineation method was developed in this study. In this method, the scale levels of target tree crowns are first morphologically determined; the CHM is filtered at the multiple scale levels; and local maxima within each filtered CHM are taken as markers to segment the original chm using the marker-controlled watershed method. After tree crown segments are selected from the multiple resulting segmentation maps and integrated together, a complete tree crown map is generated. In an experiment on natural forests in Ontario, Canada, the proposed method yielded crown maps having a good consistency with manual and visual interpretation. For instance, when compared to a manually delineated forest map, the automated method correctly delineated about 69 percent, 65 percent, and 73 percent of the tree crowns from plots of closed canopy coniferous, deciduous, and mixed wood forests, respectively. The Canny edge detector is applied to perform multispectral edge detection. The detected edge features are then utilized in a multiscale segmentation loop, and the merge procedure for adjacent image objects is controlled by a separability criterion that combines edge information with segmentation scale. The significance of the edge is measured by adjacent partitioned regions to perform edge assessment. The present method is based on a half-partition structure, which is composed of three steps: single edge detection, separated pixel grouping, and significant feature calculation. The spectral distance of the half-partitions separated by the edge is calculated, compared, and integrated into the edge information. The results show that the proposed approach works well on satellite multispectral images of a coastal area.
