[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) In the last few years, several researchers have proposed different procedures for the fusion of multispectral and panchromatic images based on the wavelet transform, which provide satisfactory high spatial resolution images keeping the spectral properties of the original multispectral data. The discrete approach of the wavelet transform can be performed with different algorithms, Mallat's and the 'à trous' being the most popular ones for image fusion purposes. Each algorithm has its particular mathematical properties and leads to different image decompositions. In this article, both algorithms are compared by the analysis of the spectral and spatial quality of the merged images which were obtained by applying several wavelet based, image fusion methods. All these have been used to merge Ikonos multispectral and panchromatic spatially degraded images. Comparison of the fused images is based on spectral and spatial characteristics and it is performed visually and quantitatively using statistical parameters and quantitative indexes. In spite of its a priori lower theoretical mathematical suitability to extract detail in a multiresolution scheme, the à trous' algorithm has worked out better than Mallat's algorithm for image merging purposes. [Termes IGN] instrument d'optiqueRésumé : (Auteur) My article on Airborne Digital Frame Cameras that was published in october 2003 issue of geoinformatics gave an overview of the principal technology that is being used currently to acquire digital images directly from an airborne platform. As the name suggests, these frame cameras use areal (square or rectangular) arrays of CCD or CMOS detectors to record individual frame images of the ground for mapping purposes. The main alternative airborne digital imaging technology uses linear arrays of detectors allied to a pushbroom mode of operation that utilizes the foward motion of the airborne platform to sweep out a continuous strip image of the ground. The aim of this new article is to present an overview of this alternative digital imaging technology.
