[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) We present a new method for remote sensing image segmentation, which utilizes both spectral and texture information. Linear filters are used to provide enhanced spatial patterns. For each pixel location, we compute combined spectral and texture features using local spectral histograms, which concatenate local histograms of all input bands. We regard each feature as a linear combination of several representative features, each of which corresponds to a segment. Segmentation is given by estimating combination weights, which indicate segment ownership of pixels. We present segmentation solutions where representative features are either known or unknown. We also show that feature dimensions can be greatly reduced via subspace projection. The scale issue is investigated, and an algorithm is presented to automatically select proper scales, which does not require segmentation at multiple-scale levels. Experimental results demonstrate the promise of the proposed method. It is organized in three main parts. The first part presents technological information about remote sensing (choice of satellite orbit and sensors) and elements of physics related to sensing (optics and microwave propagation). The second part presents image processing algorithms and their specificities for radar or optical, multi and hyper-spectral images. The final part is devoted to applications: change detection and analysis of time series, elevation measurement, displacement measurement and data assimilation. Offering a comprehensive survey of the domain of remote sensing imagery with a multi-disciplinary approach, this book is suitable for graduate students and engineers, with backgrounds either in computer science and applied math (signal and image processing) or geo-physics. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) Impervious surface estimation has been widely conducted with medium-high resolution optical imagery. Challenges however, remain in aspects of spectral similarity of different objects, mixed pixel, and shadows of tall buildings or large tree crowns. In order to reduce these uncertainties, this study explores the synergistic use of optical and radar remote sensing datasets in highly populated urban areas. A comparative analysis is performed between the RADARSAT-2 full POLSAR image and the SPOTS optical image. For both datasets, the C5.0 decision tree algorithm is applied to select features extracted to build a decision tree for urban impervious surface classification. It is found in this study that optical and POLSAR images possess different merits in delineating urban land surfaces. The POLSAR data is helpful for delineating bright impervious surfaces (e.g., buildings) and bare soils, which is often a difficult task for optical data. However, the confusion between dark impervious surfaces and bare soils becomes a severe problem due to similar surface scattering mechanisms. The intrinsic characteristics of radar scattering (e.g., layover and shadow effects) also result in high uncertainties in dense urban areas. These problems are leveraged when both optical and decomposed POLSAR features are considered. The results from this study indicate that the synergistic use of optical and POLSAR data could be an efficient approach to improving the estimation of urban impervious surfaces. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Intermediate results of two state-of-the-art wrapper feature selection approaches (GA and SFFS) associated to a classifier (linear SVM) applied to hyperspectral data sets were used to derive information about band importance for specific land cover classification problems. The impact of the number of selected bands on classification accuracy was obtained thanks to SFFS, while a band importance measure was derived from intermediate sets of bands tested by GA. Such results are a first step toward the identification of the most suitable spectral bands to design superspectral camera systems dedicated to specific applications (e.g. classification of urban land cover and material maps).
