[Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of the third dimension from remote sensing data is a well known technique. Since in a number of countries aerial images and laser scanner data are unavailable, expensive or classified, stereoscopic high-resolution optical satellite images provide a viable alternative for generating digital surface and digital terrain models. Especially the automatic extraction of highly accurate 3D surface models in urban areas is still a very complicated task due to occlusions, large differences in height and the variety of objects and surface material. In this paper, an analysis and a visual and quantitative comparison of three different matching algorithms for generating urban DSMs based on very high-resolution satellite images is presented. The three algorithms are least squares matching (lsm) in a region growing fashion, dynamic programming (DP) and semiglobal matching (sgm). The characteristics of the three algorithms as applied to four different Ikonos stereo pairs with a ground sampling distance of 1 m are shown. The following results were obtained: visually, in the lsm results the shape of the buildings is considerably smoothed. While in the DP results the building shape is sharper, only little detail is visible on the building roofs, and streaking along the epipolar lines causes problems. With SGM, more details can be extracted and the results visually have the best quality. Based on reference data for the different test sites, the standard deviation of the building heights determined by LSM and DP is in the range of one pixel or slightly better, while it is in the range of half a pixel for SGM. This is particularly the case if the area of interest is large and not easy to access, such as in Alps, which shows one of the highest increases in temperature of the past decades. This articles gives an overview of the applications, as well as the limits, of remote sensing used to determine climate change impacts in the Alpine environment. [Termes IGN] Oklahoma (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing with multispectral thermal infrared can improve regional estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) by providing new constraints on land surface energy balance. Current models use visible and near infrared bands to obtain vegetative cover, and sometimes use thermal infrared data for land surface temperature. Together these can yield good ET estimates. However, it may be possible to do even better by using remotely sensed thermal infrared emissivity, a surface property related to fractional vegetative cover but independent of plant greenness. Emissivities derived from clear-sky Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations obtained in 2007 over the Southern Great Plains (Oklahoma and Kansas), USA, were compared with changes in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for winter wheat and grazing land. Emissivity changes were independent of NDVI and sensitive to standing canopies, regardless of growth stage or senescence. Thus emissivities were seasonally dynamic, able to detect wheat harvest timing, and helpful for modelling ET. [Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) In the early stages of post-disaster response, a quick and reliable damage assessment map is essential. As time is a critical factor, automated damage mapping from remotely sensed images is the expected solution to drastically reduce data acquisition and computation time. Recently, high-resolution satellite images, such as QuickBird data, have been in high demand by damage assessment analysts and disaster management practitioners. However, the existing automated mapping approaches hardly accommodate such high-resolution data. This research aims at developing a new context-based automated approach for earthquake damage mapping from high-resolution satellite images. Relevant contextual information (including structure, shape, size, edge texture, spatial relations) describing the damage situation is formulated and up-scaled on a morphological scale-space. Speed optimization is achieved by parallel processing implementation. The developed approach was tested with two QuickBird images acquired on 26 June 2005 and 3 June 2008 over YingXiu town, Sichuan, China, which suffered the devastating 12 May 2008 earthquake. In comparison to the reference, the developed mapping approach could achieve over 80% accuracy for computation of the damage ratio. Future research is planned to test the approach on various disaster cases for both optical and radar images using a grid-computing platform towards a cost-effective damage mapping solution.
