[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The integration of Hyperion and Ikonos imagery are used to differentiate the subtle spectral differences of landuse/ land-cover types on household farms in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA) with an emphasis on secondary and successional forests. Approaches are examined that include the use of Principal Components Analysis to compress the Hyperion hyperspectral data to its most vital spectral channels; linear mixture modeling to derive subpixel fractions of land-use/land-cover types through the generation of spectral endmembers; and supervised and unsupervised classifications to map forest regrowth, agricultural crops and pasture, and other land-uses on 18 survey farms that are spatially coincident with the imagery. A longitudinal socio-economic and demographic survey (1990 and 1999) is used to characterize household farms; a community survey (2000) is used to assess nearby market towns and service centers; GIS is used to represent the resource endowments of farms and their geographic accessibility. Statistical relationships are examined using Spearman rank correlation coefficients to assess the linkages among a number of selected social, geographical, and biophysical variables and secondary and successional forest on household farms. Relationships suggest the importance of household characteristics, farm resources, and geographic access of secondary forests on surveyed household farms that were previously deforested and converted to agriculture through extensification processes. Results support the integrated use of hyperspectral and hyperspatial data for characterizing forest regrowth on household farms, and the use of multi-dimensional social survey data and GIS to assess plausible causes and consequences of land-use/land-cover dynamics in the NEA. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The term “image fusion” covers multiple techniques used to combine the geometric detail of a high-resolution panchromatic image and the color information of a low-resolution multispectral image to produce a final image with the highest possible spatial information content while still preserving good spectral information quality. During the last twenty years, many methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Multiplicative Transform, Brovey Transform, and IHS Transform have been developed producing good quality fused images. Despite the quite good visual results, many research papers have reported the limitations of the above fusion techniques. The most significant problem is color distortion. Another common problem is that the fusion quality often depends upon the operator’s fusion experience and upon the data set being fused. In this study, we compare the efficiency of nine fusion techniques and more specifically the efficiency of IHS, Modified IHS, PCA, Pansharp, Wavelet, LMM (Local Mean Matching), LMVM (Local Mean and Variance Matching), Brovey, and Multiplicative fusion techniques for the fusion of QuickBird data. The suitability of these fusion techniques for various applications depends on the spectral and spatial quality of the fused images. In order to quantitatively measure the quality of the fused images, we have made the following controls. First, we have examined the visual qualitative result. Then, we examined the correlation between the original multispectral and the fused images and all the statistical parameters of the histograms of the various frequency bands. Finally, we performed an unsupervised classification, and we compared the resulting images. All the fusion techniques improve the resolution and the visual result. The resampling method practically has no effect on the final visual result. The LMVM, the LMM, the Pansharp, and the Wavelet merging technique do not change the statistical parameters of the original images. The Modified IHS provokes minor changes to the statistical parameters than the classical IHS or than the PCA. After all the controls, the LMVM, the LMM, the Pansharp, and the Modified IHS algorithm seem to gather the more advantages in fusion panchromatic and multispectral data. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) A continuous and autonomous co-registration and geo-location of image data from multiple sensors with widely varying view angles and resolution is one of the unique challenges of IRS-P6 data processing. The Liss-4 camera is capable of imaging in either multi-spectral or panchromatic modes with steerability up to +/- 27°. As the satellite sweeps longer strips with oblique viewing configuration, data product generation requires an elevation database to accommodate the errors due to terrain topography. SRTM, GTOPO30, DCW etc. are becoming hidden information to product generation schemes. In this paper, we analyze and justify the requirement of inclusion of a global DEM in the product generation system for Liss-4 data. In the first part of the study, after a brief introduction of sensor model, comparison of elevation from SRTM and GTOPO30 is made which leads towards a conclusion that GTOPO30 is adequate for improving the accuracy. The second part deals with the impact of GTOPO30 on geometric accuracy. Thirdly we analyze the terrain effects on band-to-band registration of Liss-4 multispectral data. A perfect band-to-band registration cannot be achieved without inclusion of digital elevation model. Many Liss-4 data sets with different tilts that cover terrain patches with flat, rolling and highly undulating nature are studied and the results reported. [Termes IGN] positionnement absoluRésumé : (Auteur) Most geoscientific applications using georeferenced cartographic/geospatial data require good knowledge and visualization of the topography of the Earth's surface. For example, mapping of geomorphological features is hardly feasible from a single image; three-dimensional (3D) information has to be generated or added for a better interpretation of the two-dimensional data. Since the early emergence of earth observation satellites, researchers have investigated different methods of extracting 3D information using satellite data. Since the early experiments with the Earth Terrain Camera flown onboard SkyLab in 1973 to 1974, various analogue or digital sensors in the visible or microwave spectrum have been flown to provide researchers and geoscientists with spatial data for extracting and interpreting 3D information of the Earth's surface. Stereo viewing using digital scanner images, such as with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) along-track sensors, was, and still is, the most common method used by the mapping, geomatic, and geoscientific communities for generating digital elevation models (DEMs). This paper will review the basic characteristics of stereoscopy and its application to the ASTER system for DEM generation. It will thus address the methods, algorithms and commercial software to extract absolute or relative elevation and assess their performance using the results from various research and commercial organizations. It will finally discuss the use of stereo ASTER DEMs for different geomatic and geoscientific applications. [Termes IGN] limite de résolution géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) In image fusion, the spatial resolution ratio can be defined as the ratio between the spatial resolution of the high-resolution panchromatic image and that of the low-resolution multispectral image. This paper attempts to assess the effects of the spatial resolution ratio of the input images on the quality of the fused image. Experimental results indicate that a spatial resolution ratio of 1 : 10 or higher is desired for optimal multisensor image fusion provided the input panchromatic image is not downsampled to a coarser resolution. Due to the synthetic pixels generated from resampling, the quality of the fused image decreases as the spatial resolution ratio decreases (e.g. from 1 : 10 to 1 : 30). However, even with a spatial resolution ratio as small as 1 : 30, the quality of the fused image is still better than the original multispectral image alone for feature interpretation. In cases where the spatial resolution ratio is too small (e.g. 1 : 30), to obtain better spectral integrity of the fused image, one may downsample the input high-resolution panchromatic image to a slightly lower resolution before fusing it with the multispectral image.
