The ASTER system consists of three subsystems: visible and near-infrared (VNIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) radiometers. The VNIR subsystem has a backward-viewing telescope as well as a nadir one. To deliver data products of high quality from the viewpoint of geolocation and hand-to-hand registration performance, a fundamental program, called Level-1 data processing, has been developed for images obtained using four telescopes with a cross-track pointing function. In this work, the methodology of the geometric validation is first described. Next, the image quality of ASTER data products is evaluated in view of the geometric performance over a period of four years. The hand-to-hand registration accuracy in the subsystem is better than 0.1 pixels and that between subsystems is better than 0.2 pixels. This means that the geometric database is determined accurately and the image matching method based on a cross-correlation function is effective in the operational usage. [Termes IGN] Washington (Etats-Unis ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) Impervious surfaces have been identified as an important and quantifiable indicator of environmental degradation in urban settings. A number of research efforts have been directed at mapping impervious surface type using multispectral imagery. To date, however, no studies have compared equivalent techniques using multispectral and hyperspectral imagery to that end. In this study, data from NASA's 220-channel Hyperion instrument were used to: a) delineate three types of impervious surface, and b) map sub-pixel percent abundance for a study site near Washington, D.C., USA. The results were compared with the results of similar methods using same-spatial-resolution Landsat ETM+ data for mapping impervious surface type, and with the results of the U. S. Geological Survey's National Land Cover Data (NLCD) 2001 impervious surface data layer, which is derived-from Landsat and high-resolution Ikonos data. The accuracy of discriminating impervious surface type using Hyperion data was assessed at 88% versus Landsat at 59%. The sub-pixel percent impervious map corresponded well with the NLCD 2001; impervious surface in the study area was calculated at 29.3% for NLCD 2001 and 28.4% for the Hyperion derived layer. The results suggest that fairly simple techniques using hyperspectral data are effective for quantifying impervious surface type, and that high-spectral-resolution imagery may be a good alternative to high-spatial-resolution data. A fully consistent radiative transfer approach is always preferred when dealing with the retrieval of surface reflectance from hyperspectral/multiangular data. However, due to the reported calibration anomalies for CHRIS data, a direct atmospheric correction based on physical radiative transfer modeling is not possible, and the method must somehow compensate for such calibration problems in specific wavelength ranges. A dedicated atmospheric correction algorithm for PROBA/CHRIS data over land is presented in this work. It consists in the combination of radiative transfer and empirical line approaches to atmospheric correction, in order to retrieve surface reflectance images free from both the atmospheric distortion and artifacts due to miscalibration. The atmospheric optical parameters and the updated set of calibration coefficients are obtained jointly in an autonomous process, without the need for any ancillary data. Results from the application of the algorithm to PROBA/CHRIS data from the two European Space Agency SPectra bARrax Campaign (SPARC) held at the Barrax study site (La Mancha, Spain) in 2003 and 2004 are presented in this work, focusing on the validation of the final surface reflectance using in situ measurements acquired simultaneously to PROBA overpasses. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This study introduces a change detection model based on Neighborhood Correlation Image (NCI) logic. It is based on the fact that the sail-, geographic area (e.g., a 3 x 3 pixel window) on two dates of imagery will tend to be highly correlated if little change has occurred, an uncorrelated when change occurs. Computing the piecewise correlation between two data sets provides valuable information regarding the location and numeric change value derived using contextual information within the specified neighborhood. Various neighborhood configuration (i.e., multi-level NCls) were explored in the study using high spatial resolution multispectral imagery: smaller neighborhood sizes provided some detailed change information (such as a new patios added to an existing building) at the cost of introducing some noise (such as change, shadows). Larger neighborhood sizes were useful for removing this noise but introduced some inaccurate change information (such as removing some linear feature changes). When combined with image classification using a machine learning decision tree (C5.0), classifications based on multi-level NCIs yielded superior results (e.g., using a 3-pixel circular radius neighborhood had a Kappa of 0.94), compared to the classification that did not incorporate NCIs (Kappa=0.86).
