[Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) Integrating multiple images with artificial neural networks (ANN) improves classification accuracy. ANN performance is sensitive to training datasets. Complexity and errors compound when merging multiple data, pointing to needs for new techniques. Kohonen's self-organizing mapping (KSOM) neural network was adapted as an automated data selector (ADS) to replace manual training data processes. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) network was then trained using automatically extracted datasets and used for classification. Two hypotheses were tested: ADS adapted from the KSOM network provides adequate and reliable training datasets, improving MLP classification performance; and fusion of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and SPOT images using the modified ANN approach increases accuracy. ADS adapted from the KSOM network improved training data quality and increased classification accuracy and efficiency. Fusion of compatible multiple data can improve performance if appropriate training datasets are collected. This proved to be a viable classification scheme particularly where acquiring sufficient and reliable training datasets is difficult. [Termes IGN] qualité géométrique (image)Résumé : (Auteur) The aim of this paper was to extend the method of downscaling cokriging for image fusion by making the method spatially adaptive in that the filter parameters (cokriging weights) can change across the image. The method can adapt itself to the usual statistical non-homogeneity (spatially variable mean, variance and correlation length) of a satellite sensor image that covers an area with different spatial patterns of geographical objects or different terrain types. The solution adopted was to estimate the models of covariances and cross-covariances (or semivariograms and cross-semivariograms) by the same procedure as described in Pardo-Iguzquiza et al. (2006) but with the method applied locally instead of globally. The correct implementation of this local estimation is the key for computational feasibility and prediction efficiency. Two parameters to be taken into account are the grid of locations on which a moving window is centred (local modelling is performed inside this window) and the size of this moving window. With respect to the latter parameter, there is a trade-off between a size small enough to make the procedure locally adaptive and large enough to produce reliable statistical estimates. The computational burden will impose limits to the distance between grid points on which the local moving window is centred. A case study with Landsat ETM+ images was used to show the implementation of the method and the result was evaluated using several statistics widely used for assessing the quality of a fused image, apart from its visual appearance. [Termes IGN] MNS SRTMRésumé : (Auteur) We present a nonhierarchical electromagnetic (EM) land surface classification method through the integration of satellite multispectral high-resolution optical and polarized radar images of central Alberta near the Saskatchewan border. We implement a conventional supervised land surface classification method and a principal component analysis to a QuickBird image. The EM properties are then assigned to the classified surfaces to produce hierarchical EM land classification maps. To further classify a hierarchical EM surface (i.e., dielectric constant), we calculate the root-mean-square surface height with a Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 3-arc-second digital elevation model and the temperatures from a thermal band of a Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image. We also calculate the backscattering coefficients from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar image. Using these estimated values, we calculate the intrinsic weighting factors with the Dubois (1995) model for less vegetated land areas and the Ulaby (1986) model for open water areas. By applying these weighting factors to the hierarchical EM surface, we generate a nonhierarchical higher resolution EM surface map of the study area. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) We show how methods proposed in the statistical community dealing with missing data may be applied for land cover classification, where optical observations are missing due to clouds and snow. The proposed method is divided into two stages: 1) cloud/snow classification and 2) training and land cover classification. The purpose of the cloud/snow classification stage is to determine which pixels are missing due to clouds and snow. All pixels in each optical image are classified into the classes cloud, snow, water, and vegetation using a suitable classifier. The pixels classified as cloud or snow are labeled as missing, and this information is used in the subsequent training and classification stage, which deals with classification of the pixels into various land cover classes. For land cover classification, we apply the maximum-likelihood (assuming normal distributions), -nearest neighbor, and Parzen classifiers, all modified to handle missing features. The classifiers are evaluated on Landsat (both Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) images covering a scene at about 900 m a.s.l. in the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in Southern Norway, where 4869 in situ samples of the land cover classes water, ridge, leeside, snowbed, mire, forest, and rock are obtained. The results show that proper modeling of the missing pixels improves the classification rate by 5%-10%, and by using multiple images, we increase the chance of observing the land cover type substantially. The nonparametric classifiers handle nonignorable missing-data mechanisms and are therefore particularly suitable for remote sensing applications where the pixels covered by snow and cloud may depend on the land cover type.
