[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Rapid land development in rapidly growing countries has created a series of land-use problems. The implementation of sustainable land use can alleviate some of these problems. It needs a set of tools for the exploration, design, modification, illustration, and evaluation of alternative planning scenarios. This paper demonstrates that the integration of cellular automata and agent-based modelling can provide a spatial exploratory tool for generating alternative development patterns. Sustainable development strategies are embedded in the modelling to regulate agents' behaviours. The use of agents can help to represent human-environment interactions in solving complex land-use problems. It is able to examine the effects of different stakeholders in influencing the process of land development. The proposed model has been applied to the simulation of planning scenarios for residential development in a rapidly expanding city in the Pearl River Delta. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) WinBasin is a GIS-based watershed analysis system that can automatically calculate depressionless flow directions, delineate watersheds/sub-watersheds, extract realistic drainage networks, and calculate geomorphological indices and hydrological responses from digital elevation models. Several improved algorithms coupled with GIS techniques were proposed for automated watershed analysis. First, different from depression fill-up treatment methods, the depression watershed method coupled with the improved fuzzy c-mean algorithm allows the depression outlet location and flow directions to be determined. Second, by using the GIS-based point-and-click interface coupled with outlet-tracing and headwater-tracing algorithms, watersheds with user-specified outlets and realistic drainage networks can be easily extracted based on the derived flow directions. The analysed results can be exported to vector format for linkage with other GIS software. Third, the geomorphological indices and hydrological responses (width function and geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph) in a watershed can also be instantly derived based on the proposed algorithms and the GIS technique. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Web service technologies can be used to establish an interoperable framework between different generalisation systems. In a previous article three categories of generalisation web services were identified, including support services, operator services and processing services. This paper focuses on the category of support services. In a service-based generalisation system, the purpose of support services is to assist the generalisation process by providing auxiliary measures, procedures and data structures that allow the representation of structural cartographic knowledge. The structural knowledge of the spatial and semantic context and the modelling of structural and spatial relationships is critical for the understanding of the role of cartographic features and thus for automated generalisation. Support services should extract and model this knowledge from the raw data and make it available to other generalisation operators. On the one hand the structural knowledge can be expressed by enriching map features with additional geometries or attributes. On the other hand, there exist various hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships between map features, many of which can be represented by graph data structures. After a brief introduction to the interoperable web service framework, this paper proposes a taxonomy of generalisation support services and discusses its elements. It is then shown how the complex output of such services can be represented for use with web services and stored in a reusable fashion. Finally, the utilisation of support services is illustrated on four implementation examples of support services that also highlight the interactions with the generalisation operators that use these auxiliary services. [Termes IGN] nivellement directRésumé : (Auteur) As rates of sea-level rise continue to increase due to climate change, land planners require accurate spatial analyses on the extent and timing of coastal flooding and associated hazards. Digital elevation data used to evaluate coastal vulnerability to flooding are available at various horizontal and vertical resolutions. However, the quality of digital elevation models (DEM) used in environmental assessment can significantly affect the detection of topographic features and the magnitude of hydrological processes. We used lidar elevation data in coastal North Carolina, USA to investigate the effects of horizontal resolution and connectivity on the extent and timing of flooding from sea-level rise. We found that the rate and extent of inundation were dependent on horizontal resolution and assumptions made on hydrological connectivity. The variation in flood extent was much larger (760 km2) at low sea-level projections (~0.9 m, 114 km2) due to the effect of hydrological corrections on the coarse-scale DEM and topographic complexity at low elevations. Lidar elevation data provide a significant advance in mapping potential coastal flooding, but the extent and timing of inundation are sensitive to horizontal resolution and the modelling of hydrological connectivity. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The present paper examines whether the formal topological characterisation of spatial relations between moving geographic regions provides an adequate basis for the human conceptualisation of motion events for those regions. The paper focuses on gradual changes in topological relationships caused by continuous transformations of the regions (specifically, translations). Using a series of experiments, the conceptualisation and perception of conceptual neighborhoods is investigated. In particular, the role of conceptual neighborhoods in characterising motion events is scrutinised. The experiments employ a grouping paradigm and a custom-made tool for presenting animated icons. The analysis examines whether paths through a conceptual neighborhood graph sufficiently characterise the conceptualisation of the movement of two regions. The results of the experiments show that changes in topological relations—as detailed by paths through a conceptual neighborhood graph—are not sufficient to characterise the cognitive conceptualisation of moving regions. The similarity ratings show clear effects of perceptually and conceptually induced groupings such as identity (which region is moving), reference (whether a larger or a smaller region is moving), and dynamics (whether both regions are moving at the same time).
