[Termes IGN] positionnement par GPSRésumé : (Auteur) A landslide movement was detected as geometric misregistration in image matching between two SPOT HRV panchromatic image data of different acquisition dates. The test site is an active landslide in Itaya area, Yamagata Prefecture, northern Japan. The average rate of the landslide movement is approximately 1 cm per day based upon differential GPS measurements. Pixel level and subpixel level image matching was applied to an HRV image pair obtained on I November 1987 and 29 October 1993. As a result, the landslide movement was successfully detected as misregistration vectors between the two HRV scenes. The displacement is approximately 20m to 30m over the 6-year period between 1987 and 1993 and is consistent with the landslide movement inferred from the GPS measurements. SPOT4-Vegetafion 10-day composites from 1998 to 2000 were used for the generation of a cloud free sub-regional mosaic image. Pixel selection was based on minimum values in the short-wave (monthly composites) and near-infrared spectral bands (annual composites), providing a maximum discrimination between forest and non-forest. A forest cover map was derived from digital classification of the dataset. The classification result was validated by comparison with the interpretation of 19 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) reference sites distributed over the sub-region. Forest area estimates were derived from the map and compared to Forest Resources Assessment 2000 data compiled by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Results show that the new coarse resolution satellite sensor can provide sufficient information for mapping of tropical forest cover at the regional and sub-regional level. [Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (Auteur) Climate change studies require consistent, long time series, surface reflectance data. The characterization of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is important for normalizing the solar radiation reflected from the earth's surface. We evaluated four BRDF models to identify the preferred approach to the normalization of multiyear National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and SPOT4VEGETATION (VGT) composite images to a common illumination and viewing geometry. Four models by the following authors were included: Walthall, Ropjean, Ross-Li, and a new nonlinear temporal angular model (NTAM). NTAM accounts for hotspot effects and also responds to seasonal changes in land cover properties (using vegetation indexes as surrogate temporal measures). We compared the performance of the models under different scenarios of coefficient derivation and model application including model ability to reproduce theoretical BRDF curves, model consistency in single, multiyear, and incomplete sampling schemes, and comparison of AVMR and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper surface reflectance prior and after BRDF normalization. We found that in all the tests, NTAM yielded the best fits between the observed and estimated values. NTAM requires eight coefficients and a lengthier iterative procedure to derive the coefficients, but the resulting coefficients are applied to the entire growing season rather than one temporal window. NTAM also performed well for different sensors (AVHRR, VGT) and geographic areas (Canada, east Asia, southern United States). Our results contradict the often-encountered perception that semiempirical BRDF models for angular normalization are all similarly effective, and the research on this topic is mature. We also describe a procedure for routine normalization of satellite optical data. For northern ecosystems, the NTAM coefficients derived from AVHRR and VGT data for Canada are available via ftp://Ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Multiple satellite sensors are used to analyze physical processes that determine energy fluxes and their interaction at the urban surface. The study is based on summertime microclimate analyses of the Los Angeles and Paris metropolises. The method consists of deriving some parameters governing the surface heat fluxes, constructing statistics of thermal infrared images, and using a GIS to combine them with a landcover classification from SPOTHRV multispectral images, and with data from intensive insitu experiments. The average images reveal spatial and temporal variations of land surface temperature (LST), and distinct microclimatic patterns. The combined interpretation of the statistics images and of the landcover classification shows: (i) the effect of surface physical properties, especially in downtown business and industrial districts that display heatislands larger than 7°C; (ii) the temperating influence of water; (iii) the negative correlation between afternoon land surface temperature and normalized vegetation index, which confirms the cooling effect of urban parks; (iv) the correlation between variations of surface temperature and ozone concentration at diurnal and longer time scales. Many fusion methods have been developed based on the twoband wavelet transformation. However, due to the limitations of the transformation characteristics themselves, the twoband wavelet is not very efficient for the fusion of images whose ratio of spatial resolutions is not 2n (n = 1, 2, 3, ...), e.g., for fusing a 101 resolution panchromatic SPOT image and with 30m resolution multispectral TM images. However, a recently developed new wavelet branchmultiband wavelet can potentially be applied to solve this problem. In this paper, we develop a new approach for fusing SPOT P images with multispectral TM images based on multiband wavelet transformation. First, the theoretical basis of multiband wavelet is presented and its transformation properties are analyzed. Second, a new method for fusing a SPOT P image with multispectral images using the multiband wavelet is proposed. Specifically, the threeband wavelet is implemented to fuse 1 10m SPOT panchromatic and 30m multispectral TM images. Third, this new method is compared with previous methods such as the twoband wavelet and IHS methods for image fusion. The proposed multiband wavelet approach demonstrates an improvement in spatial and spectral characteristics for fusing SPOT P and multispectral TM images.
