In the past, cities, landscapes, etc. were always displayed as 2D chart representations. The best 3D that could be offered was a DTM of heights or depths. At the other end of the spectrum, there have always been those who did cityscaping and landscaping. Although they viewed the world as a 3D place, their models were anchored in the real world and, as such , could not be combined with other sorts of information. They were defined as purely graphical or geometrical models, thereby ignoring semantics and topology. CityGML is an attempt to resolve these aspects in a coherent way. This new type of sustainability reporting is quite difficult to perform in a consistent and objective manner, as business activities are often large-scale (and even global) and stakeholders (sometimes with diverging interests) can have different views on the positive and negative impact of business activities. Pierre-Philippe Matthieu, who works for the European Space Agency (ESA), explains how earth observation satellites can help in this endeavor. An event was organised to tackle it. From february 16th -22nd 2009 a series of workshops took place at Truro College (University of Plymouth Colleges), Cornwall, UK. Representatives focused on the application and use of digital technologies within the cultural heritage sector. This article outlines ideas raised and discussed throughout the week, summaries the worshops that took place and concludes with a general overview of the current climate for the digital preservation of cultural heritage. Different data issues are discussed along with ways in which these issues can be addressed to produce a solution that meets the needs of all stakeholders. A good example is given with a collaborative approach to Utility Asset integration and sharing in the UK is the VISTA project (Visualizing integrated information on buried assets to reduce Street Works). Similar initiatives abroad show the necessity of solving the issues addressed here.
