The approach is based on experiences in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, and is illustrated by describing pedagogical strategies used in undergraduate and graduate teaching, and providing examples of spatial learning by civil engineering students. The approach addresses the need to build students' spatial thinking capacity by teaching geospatial concepts and theory in concert with practical application of the theory through hands-on experience with geospatial technologies and software, involvement in real-world civil engineering projects, and integration with industry experts. Advancements of spatial thinking technologies and their ubiquitous and rapid adoption by society challenge civil engineering educators to equip students with the advanced skills required to meet rising expectations of their spatial thinking capacity.
