[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Global and regional vegetation assessment strategies often rely on the combined use of multisensor satellite data. Variations in spectral response function (SRF) which characterizes the sensitivity of each spectral band have been recognized as one of the most important sources of uncertainty for the use of multisensor data. This paper presents the SRF differences among 21 Earth observation satellite sensors and their cross-sensor corrections for red, near infrared (NIR), and shortwave infrared (SWIR) reflectances, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) aimed at global vegetation monitoring. The training data set to derive the SRF cross-sensor correction coefficients were generated from the state-of-the-art radiative transfer models. The results indicate that reflectances and NDVI from different satellite sensors cannot be regarded as directly equivalent. Our approach includes a polynomial regression and spectral curve information generated from a training data set representing a wide dynamics of vegetation distributions to minimize land cover specific SRF cross-sensor correction coefficient variations. The absolute mean SRF caused differences were reduced from 33.9% (20.1%) to 9.4 % (6%) for red, from 3.2 % (8.9%) to 1% (1.1% ) for NIR, from 2.9% (3.6 %) to 1.9% (1.6%) for SWIR, and from 7.1 % (9%) to 1.8% (1.7% ) for NDVI, after applying the SRF cross-sensor correction coefficients on independent top of canopy (top of atmosphere) data for all-embraced-sensor comparisons. Variations in processing strategies, non spectral differences, and algorithm preferences among sensor systems and data streams hinder cross-sensor spectra and NDVI comparability and continuity. The SRF cross-sensor correction approach provided here, however, can be used for studies aiming at large-scale vegetation monitoring with acceptable accuracy. [Termes IGN] Normalized Difference Vegetation IndexRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates the use of high resolution WorldView-II satellite data in extraction of built-up land and vegetation using normalized index techniques. The PCA 1 and NIR 2 bands-based built-up index was proposed for extracting built-up land, which exhibit high accuracy. The normalized difference vegetation index based on Red Edge and NIR 2 bands of WorldView-II produced high accuracy in the estimation of vegetation compared to the use of Red and NIR bands. The grid technique used in estimating built-up and vegetation density from precisely classified images provided better and accurate assessment of built-up and vegetation density in heterogeneous landscape of urban areas. This shows areas of very high to high built-up density are located in the central, western and southern parts, which are primarily devoid of vegetation. This study indicates possibilities of utilizing high resolution satellite data in urban landscape characterization using a grid-based technique. [Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (Auteur) As a proxy measure of the human ecological footprint, impervious surface area (ISA) has recently become a key concept in the field of urban remote sensing, with a focus on estimation of the ISA at a city-scale by using Landsat-style satellite images. However, ISA estimation is also in demand in disciplines such as the environmental assessment and policy making at a national scale. This paper proposes a new method for estimating the ISA fraction in Japan based on a temporal mixture analysis (TMA) technique. The required inputs for the proposed method are rearranged MODIS NDVI time-series datasets at the temporal stable zone (i.e., the first to the sixth largest NDVI values in a year). Three ISA distribution maps obtained from Landsat-5 TM data were used as reference maps to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed TMA-based method achieved a large reduction in the effects of endmember variability compared with the previous methods (e.g., SMA and NSMA), and thus the new method has promising accuracy for estimating ISA in Japan. The overall root mean square error (RMSE) of the proposed method was 8.7%, with a coefficient of determination of 0.86, and there was no obvious underestimation or overestimation for the whole ISA range. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to estimate carbon stock in above ground biomass (CS-AGB) of M. Pizzalto forest in the Central-Apennines in Italy, the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index data (NDVI and EVI) were used in combination with field data. Biotic and abiotic parameters (slope angle, slope gradient, elevation, seasonal incoming solar radiation, length of growing season (LGS), soil type and forest management type) has been used in the modelling. NDVI and EVI values of field samples were extracted and used to estimate the LGS of beech forest for the six year period (2005-2010). Two management types, old-growth forest and young forest, showed average AGB and CS-AGB were 247 and 123 tons.ha-1 respectively in 2010 comparable to values for beech forests in the Apennines and Europe. LGS and management are the significant variables in a linear regression model for CS - AGB. Therefore, the forest authority can manage the young forest as sinks of carbon in agreement with the Kyoto protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
