[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper introduces a new hierarchy for cartographic generalisation processes, applied in street networks. The aims of implementing this hierarchy are to emphasise on significant street features, and to provide more free spaces between street features. The hierarchy is obtained from the functional classes of the features and four centrality measures in a street network, i.e. betweenness, reach, straightness and closeness extracted from a primary graph. The values of centrality measures change in every zoom level by calculating a radius parameter, which depends on the users’ field of view. The coefficients for the measures are constructed using a decision-making technique called fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP). The weights for each of the centrality measures are computed and normalised to form the proposed hierarchy. The hierarchy is applied and used later in the thinning process to omit insignificant features from the street network in medium scales. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) In 2010, the then President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, announced an economic development plan to build a highway that spanned northern Tanzania. The map of the plan revealed a transportation network that traversed the Greater Serengeti–Mara ecosystem and bisected the iconic Serengeti National Park. Given the importance of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem to conservation and savannah ecology, not to mention international tourism, the plan immediately came under worldwide scrutiny. The Tanzanian state and the Kikwete administration were lambasted, ultimately fixing the highway project in the form of polylines on maps rather than an infrastructure project on the ground. As such, the mutability of lines on maps give the highway project the flexibility to transcend conversations across institutions that span the conservation–development spectrum with limited interrogation. This article addresses the circulation of maps representing the failed highway project through various epistemic communities. My purpose is neither to advocate the development of the Serengeti Highway nor to criticize it. Rather, I use examples of Serengeti Highway maps to discuss the way cartography travels through these conversations, reflect on the international conversation surrounding the Serengeti Highway project, and explore the question of who can (and cannot) draw lines in the contested spaces of East African rangelands. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Emerging methodologies for risk assessments of civil infrastructure networks require the coupling of several spatiotemporal models that need to be executed multiple times with varying parametrizations to account for model uncertainty and to investigate “what-if” scenarios. These requirements led to the development of a software environment to support the simulation process and the visual analysis of its results. The simulation engine component of the environment makes it possible to define, couple, and execute models. An embedded infrastructure model facilitates the development of functionality to estimate and aggregate capacity measures of single objects affected by multiple hazards. The simulation manager component can be used to execute multiple instances of the simulation engine conveniently with varying parametrizations. The included visualization tool provides two complementary views. The ensemble view can be used to analyze the data at a highly aggregated level with information visualization techniques and the simulation view can be used to investigate simulations in greater detail via an interactive map window and a state dependency graph. The software environment is used in a risk assessment for the region of Chur, Switzerland, which comprises the simulation of multiple natural hazard scenarios that lead to impaired transport infrastructure capacities and thus to disrupted traffic flows.
