[Termes IGN] surveillance d'ouvrageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents deformation analysis of Lake Urmia causeway (LUC) embankments in northwest Iran using observations from interferometry synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and finite element model (FEM) simulation. 58 SAR images including 10 ALOS, 30 Envisat and 18 TerraSAR-X are used to assess settlement of the embankments during 2003–2013. The interferometric dataset includes 140 differential interferograms which are processed using InSAR time series technique of small baseline subset approach. The results show a clear indication of large deformation on the embankments with peak amplitude of > 50 mm/year in 2003–2010, increasing to >80 mm/year in 2012–2013 in the line of sight (LOS) direction from ground to the satellite. 2D decomposition of InSAR observations from Envisat and ALOS satellites that overlap in the years 2007–2010 shows that the rate of the vertical settlement and horizontal motion is not uniform along the embankments; Both eastern and western embankments show significant vertical motion, while horizontal motion plays a more significant role in eastern embankment than western embankment. The InSAR results are then used to simulate deformation using FEM at two cross-sections at the distance of 4 and 9 km from the most western edge of the LUC for which detailed stratigraphy data are available. Results suggest that consolidation due to dissipation of excess pore pressure in embankments can satisfactory predict settlement of the LUC embankments. Our numerical modeling indicates that nearly half of the consolidation since the construction time of the causeway 30 years ago has been done. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) A 2-D range/cross-range radar image of a target is always sparse since only a few strong scattering centers occupy the whole image plane, and thus, it is quite suitable to apply the compressive sensing (CS) theory to obtain inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images. In this paper, a novel fully polarimetric ISAR imaging method based on CS is proposed. First, a definition of joint sparsity is given by exploiting the scattering characteristics of a target in fully polarimetric channels. Then, fully polarimetric ISAR images are constructed by means of the sparse recovery algorithm under the constraint of the joint sparsity. This proposed imaging method combines the merits of a full-polarization technique and CS theory, and hence, it has two main advantages: it can provide high-resolution ISAR images with limited measurements, which is a promising technique for reducing data storage; it generates fully polarimetric ISAR images with the number and the positions of the scattering centers aligned in polarimetric channels, which allows for further polarimetric scattering characteristic analysis. Finally, both simulation and experimental results are shown to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach. [Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X platforms form together the first spaceborne single-pass polarimetric interferometer in space. This allows, for the first time, the acquisition of spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) data without the disturbing effect of temporal decorrelation. This paper aims to assess the potential of such data for forest applications. For this, single- and dual-pol data acquired over a boreal, a temperate, and a tropical site were investigated to characterize X-band penetration and polarization diversity of the interferometric coherence measurements. Pol-InSAR forest height inversion schemes have been proposed and implemented for the singleand dual-pol cases and cross validated against LIDAR reference measurements for all sites. The single-pol inversion relies on an external ground digital terrain model (DTM) and performed well for all sites with correlation coefficients r2 between 0.80 and 0.98. The dual-pol inversion does not require an external DTM but depends on the visibility of the whole forest layer. Accordingly, its performance varied with forest structure and season: The best performance was achieved for the summer acquisition of the boreal test site (r2 = 0.86) and for the winter acquisition of the temperate test site (r2 = 0.77). For the tropical test site, only a weak correlation (r2 = ~0.50) could be established. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Most actual polarimetric weather radars consider either alternate transmission of horizontal and vertical polarizations or simultaneous transmission of both polarizations. Simultaneous reception of vertical and horizontal components is always performed. The way these operating modes have to be modified, to cope with the loss of polarization purity and the increase of polarization channels coupling at some pointing directions when planar phased-array radars (PARs) are used, has already been discussed. Complete correction of these effects showed to be difficult, requiring precise control of the relative amplitudes and phases of the dipoles feeding signals on transmission in a pulse-to-pulse basis. If simultaneous transmission of vertical and horizontal polarizations is considered, complete correction has not been achieved. In this paper, the implementation of a third polarimetric measurement mode based on alternate transmission of three different polarizations with PARs is discussed. It is found that implementation of this method, which provides minimum-variance unbiased linear polarimetric covariance matrix estimates, with phased-array systems only requires simple adjustments at reception. [Termes IGN] solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates performance of fully polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data in several land cover mapping studies in the boreal forest environment, taking advantage of the high canopy penetration capability at L-band. The studies included multiclass land cover mapping, forest-nonforest delineation, and classification of soil type under vegetation. PolSAR data used in the study were collected by the ALOS PALSAR sensor in 2006-2007 over a managed boreal forest site in Finland. A supervised classification approach using selected polarimetric features in the framework of probabilistic neural network (PNN) was adopted in the study. It has no assumptions about statistics of the polarimetric features, using nonparametric estimation of probability distribution functions instead. The PNN-based method improved classification accuracy compared with standard maximum-likelihood approach. The improvement was considerably strong for soil type mapping under vegetation, indicating notable non-Gaussian effects in the PolSAR data even at L-band. The classification performance was strongly dependent on seasonal conditions. The PolSAR feature data set was further modified to include a number of recently proposed polarimetric parameters (surface scattering fraction and scattering diversity), reducing the computational complexity at practically no loss in the classification accuracy. The best obtained accuracies of up to 82.6% in five-class land cover mapping and more than 90% in forest-nonforest mapping in wall-to-wall validation indicate suitability of PolSAR data for wide-area land cover and forest mapping.
