[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS)-based leaf area index (LAI) retrieval is an appealing concept, due to the ability to capture structural information of canopies as 3D point cloud data (PCD). TLS-based LAI estimation methods promise a nondestructive tool for spatially explicit calibration of LAI estimated by aerial or satellite remote sensing techniques. These methods also overcome the sky condition restrictions of on-ground optical instruments such as hemispherical photography frequently used for LAI estimation. This paper presents a new method for estimating the effective LAI (LAIe) directly from PCD generated by TLS in heterogeneous forests. We converted the 3-D PCD into 2-D raster images, similar to hemispherical photographs, using two geometrical projection techniques in order to estimate gap fraction and LAIe using a linear least squares method. Our results indicated that the TLS-based algorithm was able to capture the variability in LAIe of forest stands with a range of densities. The TLS-based LAIe estimation method explained 89.1% (rmse = 0.01 ; p Numéro de notice : A2013-080 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2012.2205003 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2012.2205003 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=32218

Laser scans contain detailed geometric information, but still require interpretation of the data for making it useable for mapping purposes. A fundamental step in the transformation of the data into objects involves their segmentation into consistent units. Such units should follow some predefined rules, and result in salient regions guided by the desire that the individual segments represent object or object-parts within the scene. Nonetheless, due to the scene complexity and the variety of objects, a segmentation using only a single cue does not suffice. Considering the availability of additional data sources such as color images, more information can be integrated in the data partitioning process and ultimately into the reconstruction scheme. We propose segmentation of terrestrial laser scanning data by the integration of range and color content and by using multiple cues. This concept raises questions regarding their mode of integration, and definition of the expected outcome. We show, that while individual segmentation based on given cues have their own limitations, their integration provide a more coherent partitioning that has better potential for further processing. Experiments show that the proposed segmentation methodology yield physically meaningful segments, which surpass those obtained via segmentation of the individual channels. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning LiDAR systems deliver not only geometric (X, Y, Z) information of the scanned surfaces but also the returned intensity of the laser pulse. Recent studies have shown the potential of using intensity data for many applications. However, there are limitations in using the raw intensity data because of radiometric system bias, reflectance noise and variations between adjacent strips. To overcome these limitations, a three-step LiDAR intensity correction algorithm is proposed. Following corrections for environmental and surface effects, an overlap-driven least-squares adjustment model that does not rely on the selection of homologous points minimizes intensity differences in the overlap area of strips. Finally, the Phong reflection model, which describes both diffuse and specular reflectance, is used to attenuate the effects of strong reflections that typically occur over wet or water dominated areas. The algorithm was applied to a multi-strip LiDAR dataset that covers wetlands in the estuary of the Yellow River, People’s Republic of China. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in radiometric differences in the overlap areas, and strong specular reflections in the nadir regions were reduced. Objects which were obscured by the specular reflection in the original intensity data were clearly identifiable after the adjustment.
