[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Urban mapping using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery presents numerous challenges. These include spectral mixing of diverse land cover components within pixels, spectral confusion with other land cover features such as fallow agricultural fields and the fact that urban classes of interest are of the land use and not the land cover category. A new methodology to address these issues is proposed. This approach involves, as a first step, the generation of two independent but rudimentary land cover products, one spectral-based at the pixel level and the other segment-based. These classifications are then merged through a rule-based approach to generate a final product with enhanced land use classes and accuracy. A comprehensive evaluation of derived products of Ottawa, Calgary and cities in southwestern Ontario is presented based on conventional ground reference data as well as inter-classification consistency analyses. Producer accuracies of 78% and 73% have been achieved for urban 'residential' and 'commercial/industrial' classes. respectively. The capability of Landsat TM to detect low density residential areas is assessed based on dwelling and population data derived from aerial photography and the 2001 Canadian census. For low population densities (i.e. below 3000 persons/km2), density is observed to be monotonically related to the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential'. At higher densities, the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential' remains constant due to Landsat's inability to distinguish between high-rise apartment dwellings and commercial/industrial structures. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) A number of haze removal methods for, satellite imagery have been described in the literature, but few papers have quantified their effectiveness within the context of a postprocessing applications scenario. In this, paper, the haze optimized transform (HOT) approach for visibleband correction is described, and its impact on classification performance is evaluated. Assessment is conducted at three levels: radiometric level of accuracy, improvement in interclass separability, and classification accuracy. Results obtained from hazy scenes and their dehazed, counterparts are compared with those from reference or "benchmark" clear scenes. Radiometric analyses of pseudoinvariant features (dense forest stands) indicate that effective haze reduction can be realized for differential HOT response levels of up to 20 for Landsat Thematic Mapper scenes. This level of atmospheric contamination is severe enough, to result in significant thematic class confusion, wherein visibleband radiances of vegetated areas are at levels normally associated with urban features under clear sky conditions. [Termes IGN] recouvrement d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Over the past decade, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to create definitive national and global data sets consisting of precision corrected Landsat Multispectral Scanner (Mss) and Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes. One important application of these data is the derivation of large area ]andcover products spanning multiple satellite scenes. A popular approach to land-cover mapping on this scale involves merging constituent scenes into image mosaics prior to image clustering and cluster labeling, thereby eliminating redundant geographic coverage arising from overlapping imaging swaths of adjacent orbital tracks. In this paper, arguments are presented to support the view that areas of overlapping coverage contain important information that can be used to assess and improve classification performance. A methodology is presented for the creation of large area land-cover products through the compositing of independently classified scenes. Statistical analyses of classification consistency between scenes in overlapping regions are employed both to identify mislabeled clusters and to provide a measure of classification confidence for each scene at the cluster level. During classification compositing, confidence measures are used to rationalize conflicting classifications in overlap regions and to create a relative confidence layer, sampled at the pixel level, which characterizes the spatial variation in classification quality over the final product. The procedure is illustrated with results from a synoptic mapping project of the Great Lakes watershed that involved the classification and compositing of 46 Landsat Mss scenes.
