The scientific community has put a great effort throughout time to develop methods for scene acquisition and scene understanding using computer vision techniques. The goal of this thesis is to study geometry in computer vision and its applications. In computer vision, geometry describes the topological structure of the environment. Specifically, it concerns measures such as shape, volume, depth, pose, disparity, motion, and optical flow, all of which are essential cues in scene acquisition and understanding.
This thesis focuses on two primary objectives. The first is to assess the feasibility of creating semantic models of urban areas and public spaces using geometrical features coming from LiDAR sensors. The second objective is to develop a practical Virtual Reality (VR) video representation that supports 6-Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) head motion parallax using geometric computer vision and machine learning. The thesis’s first contribution is the proposal of semantic segmentation of the 3D LiDAR point cloud and its applications. The ever-growing demand for reliable mapping data, especially in urban environments, has motivated mobile mapping systems’ development. These systems acquire high precision data and, in particular 3D LiDAR point clouds and optical images. A large amount of data and their diversity make data processing a complex task. A complete urban map data processing pipeline has been developed, which annotates 3D LiDAR points with semantic labels. The proposed method is made efficient by combining fast rule-based processing for building and street surface segmentation and super-voxel-based feature extraction and classification for the remaining map elements (cars, pedestrians, trees, and traffic signs). Based on the experiments, the rule-based processing stage provides substantial improvement not only in computational time but also in classification accuracy. Furthermore, two back ends are developed for semantically labeled data that exemplify two important applications: (1) 3D high definition urban map that reconstructs a realistic 3D model using input labeled point cloud, and (2) semantic segmentation of 2D street view images. The second contribution of the thesis is the development of a practical, fast, and robust method to create high-resolution Depth-Augmented Stereo Panoramas (DASP) from a 360-degree VR camera. A novel and complete optical flow-based pipeline is developed, which provides stereo 360-views of a real-world scene with DASP. The system consists of a texture and depth panorama for each eye. A bi-directional flow estimation network is explicitly designed for stitching and stereo depth estimation, which yields state-of-the-art results with a limited run-time budget. The proposed architecture explicitly leverages geometry by getting both optical flow ground-truths. Building architectures that use this knowledge simplifies the learning problem. Moreover, a 6-DoF testbed for immersive content quality assessment is proposed. Modern machine learning techniques have been used to design the proposed architectures addressing many core computer vision problems by exploiting the enriched information coming from 3D scene structures. The architectures proposed in this thesis are practical systems that impact today’s technologies, including autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, augmented reality, robots, and smart-city infrastructures.Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

Adding to the diversity of possible input data -- photography, laser-based acquisitions and existing geographical information system (GIS) data, the variety of urban scenes as well as the large-scale nature of the problem makes for a challenging line of research. Working towards an automatic approach to this problem suggests that a one-fits-all method is hardly realistic. Two independent approaches of reconstruction from point clouds have thus been investigated in this work, with radically different points of view intended to cover a large number of use cases. In the spirit of the GIS community, the first approach makes strong assumptions on the reconstructed scenes and creates a 2.5D piecewise-planar representation of buildings using an intermediate 2D cell decomposition. Constructing these decompositions from noisy or incomplete data often leads to overly complex representations, which lack the simplicity or regularity expected in this context of reconstruction. Loosely inspired by clustering problems such as mean-shift, the focus is put on simplifying such partitions by formulating an optimization process based on a tradeoff between attachment to the original partition and objectives striving to simplify and regularize the arrangement. This method involves working with point-line duality, defining local metrics for line movements and optimizing using Riemannian gradient descent. The second approach is intended to be used in contexts where the strong assumptions on the representation of the first approach do not hold. We strive here to be as general as possible and investigate the problem of point cloud meshing in the context of noisy or incomplete data. By considering a specific minimization, corresponding to lexicographic orderings on simplicial chains, polynomial-time algorithms finding lexicographic optimal chains, homologous to a given chain or bounded by a given chain, are derived from algorithms for the computation of simplicial persistent homology. For pseudomanifold complexes in codimension 1, leveraging duality and an augmented version of the disjoint-set data structure improves the complexity of these problem instances to quasi-linear time algorithms. By combining its uses with a sharp feature detector in the point cloud, we illustrate different use cases in the context of urban reconstruction. Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Les représentations iconographiques, telles que les photos historiques d’espaces géographiques, sont des ressources précieuses du Patrimoine Culturel permettant la description de l’évolution d’une zone topographique au cours du temps. Avec l’avènement de l’ère numérique, nombre de ces documents ont été numérisés, spatialisés et sont désormais disponibles en ligne. Cependant, il reste difficile pour les utilisateurs de parcourir et de visualiser ces images dans l’espace et dans le temps. Le projet ANR ALEGORIA relève cet enjeu et s’oriente vers des collections photographiques retraçant le territoire français de l’entre-deux-guerres à nos jours, composées de photographies aériennes et terrestres fournies par le consortium (Archives Nationales, Musée Nicéphore Niépce, Institut National de l’Information Géographique et Forestière).
Cette thèse présente notre proposition pour une exploration visuelle des collections d’images historiques en utilisant une approche interactive à travers l’espace et le temps. Nous proposons de co-visualiser des photographies historiques à l’intérieur de modèles topographiques 3D contemporains, et nos deux contributions principales sont : (i) l’extrapolation du modèle de distorsion géométrique de la photographie pour permettre aux utilisateurs de visualiser le monde numérique 3D à travers le dispositif de capture de la photo à l’aide d’une méthodologie de Rendu Basée sur l’Image ; (ii) la proposition d’un ensemble de techniques de visualisation géographique basées sur la perception visuelle de l’utilisateur pour fournir une exploration interactive en 3D dans l’espace et dans le temps. Pour intégrer ces deux contributions et pour offrir des capacités d’interaction utilisateur, nous avons mis en place le prototype HISTOVIS. Il s’agit d’un système Web offrant une exploration visuelle interactive de vastes collections d’images historiques du projet ALEGORIA. Il combine plusieurs techniques de visualisation et d’interaction, par exemple, cartes thermiques, vignettes d’images, marqueurs de point de vue, etc. Trois scénarios d’usages (visualisation de fonds photographiques, exploration temporelle au niveau de la rue et navigation entre des photographies non spatialisées dans un environnement 3D) ont été évalués par une étude utilisateur et dans le cadre du projet, pour définir et évaluer son utilisabilité.Note de contenu : 1- Outline of work

[Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (auteur) With increasing urbanization, climate change poses an unprecedented threat, and climate-sensitive urban management is highly demanded. Mitigating climate change undoubtedly requires smarter urban design tools and techniques than ever before. With the continuous evolution of geospatial technologies and an added benefit of analyzing and virtually visualizing our world in three dimensions, the focus is now shifting from a traditional 2D to a more complicated 3D spatial design and assessment with increasing potential of supporting climate-responsive urban decisions. This paper focuses on using 3D city models to calculate the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) as an outdoor thermal comfort indicator in terms of assessing the spatiotemporal distribution of heat stress on the district scale. The analysis is done to evaluate planning scenarios for a district transformation in Montreal/Canada. The research identifies a systematic workflow to assess and upgrade the outdoor thermal comfort using the contribution of ArcGIS CityEngine for 3D city modeling and the open-source model of solar longwave environmental irradiance geometry (SOLWEIG) as the climate assessment model. A statistically downscaled weather profile for the warmest year predicted before 2050 (2047) is used for climate data. The outcome shows the workflow capacity for the structured recognition of area under heat stress alongside supporting the efficient intervention, the tree placement as a passive strategy of heat mitigation. The adaptability of workflow with the various urban scale makes it an effective response to the technical challenges of urban designers for decision-making and action planning. However, the discovered technical issues in data conversion and wall surface albedo processing call for the climate assessment model improvement as future demand. At the same time, CityJSON has been developing as an easy‐to‐use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) encoding for 3D city models using the CityGML 2.0 data model. Together, this opened the possibility to support semantic 3D city models in the popular open‐source GIS software for the first time. In order to add support for 3D city models in QGIS, we have developed a plugin that enables CityJSON datasets to be loaded. The plugin parses a CityJSON file and analyses its tree structure to identify all city objects. Then, the geometry and attributes of every city object are transformed into QGIS features and divided into layers according to user preferences. CityJSON parsing was proven to be straightforward and consistent when tested against several open datasets. One of the biggest challenges we faced, though, was mapping CityJSON’s hierarchical data structure to the relational model of QGIS. We undertook this issue by providing various methods on how geometries from the model are loaded as QGIS features. We intend to use the plugin for educational purposes in our university and we believe it can be proven a worthy tool for researchers and practitioners.
