[Termes IGN] transmission de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the first data structure for a variable scale representation of an area partitioning without redundancy of geometry. At the highest level of detail, the areas are represented using a topological structure based on faces and edges; there is no redundancy of geometry in this structure as the shared boundaries (edges) between neighbour areas are stored only once. Each edge is represented by a Binary Line Generalization (BLG)-tree, which enables selection of the proper representation for a given scale. Further, there is also no geometry redundancy between the different levels of detail. An edge at a higher importance level (less detail) does not contain copies of the lower-level edges or coordinates (more detail), but it is represented by efficiently combining their corresponding BLG trees. Which edges have to be combined follows from the generalization computation, and this is stored in a data structure. This data structure turns out to be a set of trees, which will be called the (Generalized Area Partitioning) GAP-edge forest. With regard to faces, the generalization result can be captured in a single tree structure for the parent-child relationships - the GAP face-tree. At the client side there are no geometric computations necessary to compute the polygon representations of the faces, merely following the topological references is sufficient. Finally, the presented data structure is also suitable for progressive transfer of vector maps, assuming that the client maintains a local copy of the GAP-face tree and the GAP-edge forest. [Termes IGN] objet géographique 3DRésumé : (Auteur) This article deals with topological concepts and models which are necessary to represent three-dimensional urban objects in a geographical information system (GIS). Depending on the shape and the representation of features, several classes with increasing topological complexity are identified and described. This complexity has strong impacts on the models and tools which are required to represent, manage and edit the data. One specific model we call '2.8-D map' is identified, which covers many 3-D applications in GIS. It is a slight extension of a 2-D or 2.5-D model and preserves the algorithmic and conceptual simplicity of the 2-D case as much as possible. The model is described in a formal way. Integrity axioms are given, which detect errors in corresponding data sets safely and guarantee the consistency of 2.8-D maps in a mathematically sound and provable way. These axioms are effectively and efficiently checkable by automatic procedures. The model extends digital terrain models (2.5-D) by allowing for vertical walls and projections like balconies or ledges. The conceptual simplicity is due to the two-dimensional topology of the model. Thus bridges and tunnels are special cases; it is shown how to detect and handle these cases efficiently. Based on this model, thematic objects and their aggregation structures are defined in a consistent way. [Termes IGN] valeur propreRésumé : (Auteur) The conventional approach for principal component analysis (PCA) and its variants applied to remote sensing involves the computation of the input data covariance/correlation matrix and/or that of noise and application of diagonalization procedures for extracting the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. When the data dimension grows significantly, the matrix computations and manipulations become practically inefficient and inaccurate due to round-off errors. In addition, all the eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors have to be evaluated. These deficiencies make the conventional scheme inefficient for remote sensing applications. For that we propose here a neural network model that performs the PCA and its variants directly from the original data without any additional non-neuronal computations or preliminary matrix estimation. Since the end user is usually not a neural network specialist, the neural network model as well as its execution are carefully designed in order to be automated as much as possible. This includes both the design of the network topology and the input/output representation as well as the design of the training algorithms. The global convergence of the model is studied. Its application has been realized on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) multispectral data. The obtained results show that the model performs well.
