[Termes IGN] modèle de simulationRésumé : (Auteur) We use an urban growth model, closely coupled with a land transition model, to simulate future urban growth in the Atlanta metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing metropolises in the United States during the past three decades. We calibrate the model with historical data that are extracted from a time series of satellite images. We design three specific scenarios to simulate the spatial consequences of urban growth under different environmental conditions. The first scenario is to simulate the continued growth trend by maintaining unchanged the current conditions. The second scenario is to project the growth trend by taking into consideration road development and environmental protection. The third scenario is to simulate the development trend by slowing down growth and changing growth pattern. The first two scenarios demonstrate that unchecked urban growth would result in the displacement of almost the entire natural vegetation and all of the open space in the metro area. In contrast, the result from the third scenario shows that much more greenness and open space, including buffer zones of large streams and lakes, could be preserved. Accordingly, the last scenario should be the most desirable for the future urban growth of Atlanta. We also examine the model's effectiveness as applied to the Atlanta area and suggest future research directions for more accurate simulations. [Termes IGN] système d'information urbainRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents how ultra high resolution remote sensing data can be used within a GIS environment for 3D city modelling and the development of urban information systems. The paper concentrates on techniques to use digital surface models (DSM's) from remotely sensed data for the creation of highly accurate digital terrain models (DTM's). DSM's can be obtained from digital stereo scanner data or from laserscanning. It can be demonstrated that DSM's from laserscanning are better suited for 3D city analysis. Using GIS techniques, however, also DSM's from stereo matching can be improved to produce highly accurate DTM's. Together with image and GIS (e.g. digital cadastral) data, these DTM's form a 3D urban information system which can be used for example for the generation of 3D simulation models that are heavily inquired for the derivation of propagation patterns (e.g., pollution, noise, radio waves). [Termes IGN] modèle de simulationRésumé : (Auteur) New generalized statistical methods to measure agreement between two maps at multiple-resolutions, where each cell in each map has a multinomial distribution among any number of categories, are presented. This methodology quantifies agreement between any two categorical maps, where either map uses fuzzy or crisp classification. The method measures the agreement at various resolutions by aggregating neighboring cells into an increasingly coarse grid. At each resolution, the method partitions the overall agreement into correct due to chance, correct due to quantity, correct due to location, error due to location, and error due to quantity. In addition, the method computes six statistics that are useful to interpret the differences between maps, and shows how these statistics change with resolution. This technique is particularly useful for characterizing land-cover change and for validating landcover change models. For illustration, this paper applies these theoretical concepts to the validation of a land-use change model for Costa Rica. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new method to simulate the evolution of multiple land uses based on the integration of neural networks and cellular automata using GIS. Simulation of multiple land use changes using cellular automata (CA) is difficult because numerous spatial variables and parameters have to be utilized. Conventional CA models have problems in defining simulation parameter values, transition rules and model structures. In this paper, a three-layer neural network with multiple output neurons is designed to calculate conversion probabilities for competing multiple land uses. The model involves iterative looping of the neural network to simulate gradual land use conversion processes. Spatial variables are not deterministic because they are dynamically updated at the end of each loop. A GIS is used to obtain site attributes and training data, and to provide spatial functions for constructing the neural network. The parameter values for modelling are automatically generated by the training procedure of neural networks. The model has been successfully applied to the simulation of multiple land use changes in a fast growing area in southern China.
